Indian FMCG and paint makers are not facing one uniform earnings outlook for FY27. Crude-linked input exposure differs by product category, companies can pass higher costs on to customers at different speeds, and price increases can weigh on demand. Crisil Ratings forecasts higher FMCG sales led mainly by realisations but lower volumes and margins; paint makers have raised prices, yet competition and the timing of cost recovery leave margins uncertain. FY27 runs from April 2026 through March 2027, so these are forecasts and partial-year signals—not full-year results.
What the FY27 forecasts say about FMCG
In a May 2026 study covering 74 companies—about one-third of the sector’s estimated ₹6.6 lakh crore revenue in FY26—Crisil Ratings forecast organised FMCG revenue growth of 8–10% in FY27, compared with about 8% in FY26. The agency expected the increase to come chiefly from realisations, or revenue per unit, rather than stronger sales volumes.

These are Crisil’s sector forecasts, not company guidance or reported FY27 outcomes. The forecast points to a trade-off: price and mix could sustain sales growth even as unit growth slows. That matters because customers may buy less, switch to cheaper products or delay purchases when prices rise.
Why input-cost exposure varies across FMCG
Companies’ raw-material baskets differ. Crisil estimated that crude-linked inputs account for 30–40% of raw materials in personal-care and home-care products such as soaps, detergents, hair oils and shampoos, compared with about 15% for food and beverage makers. Across FMCG, crude-linked costs—including packaging—represented 25–30% of raw-material costs in the agency’s analysis.

Those proportions help explain why a rise in crude-derived materials may hit some product portfolios harder than others. They are sector-level estimates, however, and do not reveal an individual company’s precise exposure, sourcing terms, inventory position or ability to substitute materials.
How higher costs could affect FMCG margins
Crisil expected gross margins at organised FMCG companies to contract by 300–350 basis points as cost pass-through remains partial amid competition and the risk of consumers trading down. Gross margin measures what remains after direct product costs. The agency separately forecast an EBITDA margin decline of 150–200 basis points from about 19% in FY26, leaving margins around 17–18%. It said advertising calibration, operating efficiencies and supply-chain negotiations could cushion some of the gross-margin pressure. The two estimates describe different margins and should not be treated as interchangeable.

The demand backdrop could complicate pricing. Crisil said household budgets in both rural and urban India faced inflationary headwinds, citing its projection that average crude prices for the fiscal year would be 30–35% higher year on year. It also identified below-normal monsoon risk for rural demand, while pointing to September 2025 GST rationalisation and increased welfare allocations as possible support. These are the agency’s assessments, not settled outcomes.

Company commentary shows different exposures, not confirmed Q2 results
Before Q2 FY27 results, an Economic Times/PTI report dated 11 October 2026 described companies facing pressure from crude oil and derivatives used in packaging, other commodities and uneven rainfall. It relayed an ICICI Direct view that revenue growth could remain in double digits for several leading FMCG companies while commodity costs held back EBITDA growth. That was a brokerage assessment reported ahead of results, not a report of completed Q2 performance.

- Dabur: The company said inflation remained elevated, particularly in home and personal care and OTC and ethical products, and that calibrated price increases and savings initiatives partly offset the effect.
- Marico: It said crude-linked derivatives had become more expensive, while copra prices remained about 35% below their peak. The company expected year-on-year gross-margin acceleration based on mix and copra prices.
- Godrej Consumer Products: It said input-cost pressures had intensified across crude derivatives, palm oils and other raw materials.
These statements describe different company assessments before Q2 results; they do not establish which company ultimately delivered the strongest quarterly or full-year earnings.
Paint makers: meaningful crude exposure, uncertain recovery
Paint makers also use crude-linked materials, but the available estimates use different denominators. Motilal Oswal’s 2 April 2026 note put crude derivatives—including solvents, resins, binders and phthalic anhydride—at about 40% of the paint raw-material basket. An Economic Times report in March 2026 described crude derivatives as about one-third of total inputs. The figures are not directly comparable because “raw-material basket” and “total inputs” are different measures.

Motilal Oswal’s note modelled crude scenarios from a USD 68.5-per-barrel base to USD 85–110 per barrel. Those were analyst assumptions, not actual prices or a forecast of FY27 prices. The note warned that a lag in passing higher input costs through can pressure near-term gross margins. Separately, the Economic Times reported Kotak Securities analyst Amit Agarwal’s historical estimate that a $1 crude increase affected paint makers’ EBITDA margins by 25 basis points if companies did not raise prices. That conditional historical sensitivity should not be read as a guaranteed current effect for every manufacturer.
Price increases and competitive pressure
Motilal Oswal reported that paint makers had implemented cumulative price increases of about 10–12% around Q4 FY26 to offset raw-material inflation linked to geopolitical disruption and crude. Its 10 June 2026 update said paint-category revenue and EBITDA grew 8% and 19%, respectively, in Q4 FY26, when benign raw-material costs supported margin expansion. It also described management as cautious about FY27 amid competition, geopolitical uncertainty, exchange-rate volatility and the risk of higher crude-linked costs.

Price actions do not guarantee immediate cost recovery. Companies may wait for inventory to turn, spread price changes over time or limit increases to protect demand. The Economic Times report said paint companies typically carried about two months’ inventory, according to Agarwal; the timing and impact of a cost shock can therefore depend on when higher-cost materials flow through.
What early FY27 company results show
Grasim’s official Q1 FY27 release, for the quarter ended 30 June 2026, reported Birla Opus paint revenue of ₹1,661 crore, up 64% year on year and 17% sequentially. Grasim said industry-wide input costs had risen sharply and that price revisions had an overall 8.8% impact in the quarter. This is a company result and company description for one quarter; strong revenue growth alone does not establish full-year margin performance.
Asian Paints’ official media page reported Q1 FY27 consolidated net sales of ₹10,521.4 crore, up 17.9%, for the quarter ended 30 June 2026. The cited figure is a top-line result; it does not provide a matching breakdown of FY27 input exposure or margin outlook.

How to assess whether a company can protect earnings
A useful comparison requires more than headline revenue growth or a reported price increase. Check that the figures refer to the same period and measure before drawing conclusions:
- Input mix: How much of the company’s raw-material basket is crude-linked, and what other commodities matter?
- Pass-through and timing: What price changes have been implemented, when do they take effect, and how quickly do higher input costs reach reported expenses?
- Demand and volumes: Are unit sales holding up by category and geography, or are customers trading down or buying less?
- Margin definitions: Is the figure gross margin or EBITDA margin? A change in one does not translate one-for-one into the other.
- Product mix and operating response: Are premium products, sourcing choices, cost savings, advertising adjustments or inventory helping offset pressure?
