For an outdoor FM antenna, grounding and bonding are safety parts of the installation. The mast or support structure and the antenna lead-in may need grounding and an antenna discharge unit under the electrical requirements adopted where you live. Keep the antenna well clear of overhead power lines. Because the correct wiring and conductor sizes depend on local code and your building’s grounding system, ask your local authority having jurisdiction or a qualified electrician if you are unsure. Grounding may help drain static charges and some voltage surges, but it does not make an antenna lightning-proof or guarantee better reception.
What needs grounding on an outdoor FM antenna?
Think of an outdoor antenna as having two related safety paths: the mast or other supporting structure, and the cable or other lead-in that carries the signal into the building. They are distinct parts of the installation; grounding only one does not necessarily address the other.
OSHA’s construction-safety regulation addresses effective grounding of antenna-support structures and requires an antenna discharge unit or another means to drain static charges from each conductor of an outdoor antenna lead-in. That regulation is useful safety guidance, but it is not a complete homeowner installation manual. The actual requirements for your property depend on the electrical code adopted locally and its amendments.

Where does the antenna discharge unit go?
The discharge unit provides a path for static charges on the lead-in. In its instructions for a specific antenna product family, Cisco places the unit close to the point where the lead-in enters the building. Treat that as manufacturer guidance for that system, not a universal placement rule for every FM antenna.

A coaxial grounding block or antenna discharge unit is a component in a properly designed installation, not a complete safety solution by itself. Its compatibility with the cable and antenna system, connection to the building’s grounding system, and installation details must all fit the applicable local requirements. Do not assume that installing a separate ground rod or copying a conductor size from another product guide will make the system compliant.
How do local electrical codes affect the installation?
The National Fire Protection Association lists the 2026 edition of NFPA 70, the National Electrical Code (NEC), as current. That does not mean the 2026 edition is the one in force at your address: adoption and amendments are set locally. NFPA code-development documents can show proposed language, but proposals and preliminary revisions are not proof of enacted requirements.

Before choosing a bonding point or conductor size, confirm which code edition and amendments apply and how the antenna system should connect to the building’s grounding system. A local authority having jurisdiction or a qualified electrician can assess those details for the specific structure. The available guidance does not establish one conductor size or wiring recipe that applies to every home.

Keep the antenna and its supporting structure positioned so they cannot fall into or accidentally contact overhead power conductors. OSHA’s antenna-placement language addresses this hazard in the context of construction safety, and a manufacturer’s safety manual warns that contact with power lines can be fatal. If you cannot maintain a safe location and falling distance, do not attempt the installation near the lines; consult a qualified professional.

Does grounding protect an antenna from lightning?
Grounding can provide some protection against voltage surges and built-up static charges, as a manufacturer safety manual describes. That is limited protection, not a promise against a direct lightning strike or all damage to connected equipment. Do not treat a grounded antenna as lightning-proof.
Does grounding improve FM reception?
The safety guidance discussed here does not establish that grounding an FM antenna improves broadcast reception. ARRL’s explanation of low radio-frequency resistance concerns RF grounding in amateur-radio contexts; it is not evidence that grounding an FM receiving antenna will improve its signal. Ground the outdoor installation for safety and code compliance, not as a reception upgrade.

What about an indoor FM antenna?
The cited requirements and warnings concern outdoor antennas and their supporting structures and lead-ins. They do not establish that every indoor FM antenna needs the same grounding arrangement. If an indoor antenna is connected through a lead-in or installed in a way that raises a safety or code question, check its manufacturer instructions and local requirements rather than applying outdoor-installation guidance blindly.
