Short answer: FLUX 3 Image Klein is an open-weights image-generation and editing family from Black Forest Labs. An INT8 build can run on an NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPU with as little as 8GB of VRAM in ComfyUI or Diffusers, while the unquantized Base checkpoint can require about 31GB. Use the Base checkpoint for LoRA training and fine-tuning; use the distilled checkpoint for ordinary generation and editing. Commercial use is allowed only under the FLUX Kommunity License and its eligibility, use, and distribution conditions.

What FLUX 3 Image Klein is

FLUX 3 Image Klein is a family of open-weights models designed for both image creation and image editing. Its documented capabilities include text-to-image generation, editing from one reference image, generation guided by multiple reference images, bounding-box prompting, and text rendering inside images.

Bounding-box prompting uses a 0–1000 coordinate grid. That lets you describe where an object should appear instead of relying only on prose such as “put the logo in the upper-right corner.” You can therefore combine a written prompt with approximate spatial coordinates when composition matters.

The image transformer is described as having 5.6 billion parameters and is paired with a separate Qwen3-VL-4B-Instruct text encoder. Those components are distributed as model files and supporting components, not as a complete, one-click inference application. You still need a compatible runtime, loader, and user interface or application.

How much GPU memory you need

There is no single VRAM number that applies to every workflow. Resolution, batch size, prompt upsampler use, quantization format, runtime, and other models loaded in memory all change the peak. Treat the figures below as planning measurements rather than guarantees for every graphics card or driver.

Checkpoint or build Precision or format Reported peak GPU memory Conditions and meaning
INT8 build INT8 As little as 8GB VRAM Black Forest Labs says this can run on NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPUs through ComfyUI or Diffusers. Actual headroom depends on resolution and the rest of the pipeline.
Base BF16 31GB 1024×1024 test with prompt upsampler off; reported by Black Forest Labs in 2026.
Base FP8 29GB Same 1024×1024, prompt-upsampler-off measurement; reported in 2026.
Base NVFP4 26GB Same 1024×1024, prompt-upsampler-off measurement; reported in 2026.
Distilled BF16 31GB Reference-setup measurement in the 2026 distilled-model README.
Distilled FP8 26GB Reference-setup measurement in the 2026 distilled-model README.
Distilled NVFP4 25GB Reference-setup measurement in the 2026 distilled-model README.

The practical decision is straightforward: an 8GB or larger NVIDIA GeForce RTX card is the entry point for the published INT8 claim, but a Base workflow at BF16 needs substantially more memory. If your card cannot hold the selected checkpoint and text encoder together, use a supported quantized build, reduce workload demands, or move inference to a GPU with more VRAM.

Black Forest Labs has not published a complete RTX model-by-model compatibility table or a universal driver matrix. Do not infer that every 8GB card, driver version, or operating-system combination will behave identically.

Choosing Base versus distilled

Choose Base for training and research

FLUX 3 Image Klein Base is the checkpoint intended for fine-tuning, LoRA training, and research. Black Forest Labs and NVIDIA both direct LoRA and fine-tuning users to the undistilled Base model. If your goal is to teach the model a subject, style, character, product appearance, or other custom concept, start with Base rather than the distilled checkpoint.

Choose distilled for generation and editing

The distilled checkpoint is intended for inference: generating images, editing references, and using the model as an application component. Distillation changes the optimization target toward practical generation, so it is the appropriate choice when you are not updating model weights.

Why the distinction matters

A checkpoint that is convenient for inference is not automatically the right training target. Training a LoRA against the distilled model can leave you without the support path documented for Klein, whereas Base is the checkpoint explicitly named for that work. Decide the checkpoint before downloading large files because the memory requirement and file set differ.

Installation: a local workflow

The official package is a set of weights and components. It does not replace an inference application. Day-one integrations named by Black Forest Labs include ComfyUI and Hugging Face Diffusers; TensorRT-LLM, SGLang Diffusion, and vLLM-Omni are also identified as supported serving directions. Each runtime needs a loader that understands the model and the precision format you selected.

1. Select a runtime and checkpoint

  • Use ComfyUI if you want a node-based local interface.
  • Use Diffusers if you are integrating generation into Python code or a service.
  • Select Base for LoRA training or other fine-tuning; select distilled for normal generation and editing.
  • Select BF16, FP8, NVFP4, or INT8 only when your chosen loader supports that format.

2. Download the model package

The Hugging Face README documents a snapshot_download workflow. Its repository page is the FLUX 3 Image Klein README. A standard Python form of that API is:

from huggingface_hub import snapshot_download

snapshot_download(
    repo_id="black-forest-labs/flux-3-image-klein",
    local_dir="./models/flux-3-image-klein",
)

Use the README’s current arguments and package names for the exact release you install. The download may include the transformer, text encoder, tokenizer, and other components, so allow enough disk space and avoid placing the cache on a nearly full system drive.

3. Install the runtime’s loader

Point ComfyUI, Diffusers, or another supported server at the downloaded directory using that project’s current FLUX 3 Image Klein instructions. Do not assume that a BF16 directory can be opened by an FP8 or NVFP4 loader. Quantized variants require a loader that explicitly supports the selected format.

4. Start with a conservative test

  1. Load one checkpoint and its text encoder, with no second model or upscaler resident in VRAM.
  2. Generate a single image at 1024×1024 or a lower resolution if memory is tight.
  3. Keep batch size at one while you verify that the model loads and produces an image.
  4. Only then add reference images, a prompt upsampler, larger dimensions, batching, or other nodes.

This staged approach separates a loader or file-format problem from a simple out-of-memory condition.

Common installation failures and fixes

Out-of-memory errors

Compare your workload with the published peak figures, then reduce resolution, batch size, or simultaneously loaded components. Move from BF16 to a supported FP8, NVFP4, or INT8 build when your runtime supports it. An 8GB card may meet the INT8 minimum claim but cannot be expected to hold the 31GB Base BF16 configuration.

Unsupported quantization format

FP8 and NVFP4 files are not interchangeable with a loader that only understands BF16. Install or select a runtime integration that advertises the format, or download a format your existing loader supports.

Missing files or a partial download

Check that the snapshot completed and that the directory contains all components referenced by the README. Re-running the download with the same cache or local directory normally lets the hub client verify and fetch missing files rather than requiring a new destination.

It downloads successfully but will not run

Remember that the package is not a full application. A successful download does not install ComfyUI, Diffusers, a web server, or a compatible GPU backend. Complete the runtime-specific setup and use that project’s FLUX 3 Image Klein loader.

LoRA training and fine-tuning

Use FLUX 3 Image Klein Base when training a LoRA or performing broader fine-tuning. Black Forest Labs states that Diffusers and Ostris’s AI Toolkit support LoRA training from release, and NVIDIA likewise points training users to the undistilled Base checkpoint.

What a LoRA changes

A LoRA adds a comparatively small set of learned parameters instead of rewriting the full model. You keep the Base checkpoint and load the adapter during generation. This makes it practical to maintain separate adapters for different subjects or styles, provided your training data and license allow the intended use.

Training checklist

  • Download the Base checkpoint, not the distilled generation checkpoint.
  • Use a training tool and model loader that explicitly support FLUX 3 Image Klein.
  • Budget VRAM for the training process, optimizer state, images, text encoder, and checkpoints; inference figures are not training requirements.
  • Keep captions and source-image rights organized so you can explain what the adapter learned and whether you may distribute it.
  • Test the finished LoRA at the target resolution and with the same base model and format used during training.

Black Forest Labs reports that serving a LoRA added about 5% to generation time on its cited NVIDIA GB300 NVFP4 setup. That is a hardware-specific serving result, not a universal penalty for every GPU, runtime, or adapter.

Commercial use: what the license actually permits

Commercial permission is conditional, not a blanket promise that every business may use every model file in every way. The FLUX Kommunity License defines a Qualifying User as a user whose combined gross annualized revenue with affiliates is less than US$5,000,000, according to the 2026 license terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When selling generated images can be covered

The license grants Qualifying Users the right to use Outputs, including Outputs from Derivatives, for commercial purposes and to run the model in production to generate those Outputs, subject to the license. That can cover a business selling images, using them in client deliverables, or incorporating them into a commercial workflow when the business qualifies and follows the remaining conditions.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

What remains your responsibility

Black Forest Labs states that it claims no ownership rights in the Outputs. You are solely responsible for the Outputs you generate and how you subsequently use them. You must still consider copyright, trademarks, publicity rights, privacy, likeness permissions, data licenses, customer contracts, and any other third-party rights implicated by a prompt, reference image, training set, or final image.

Situations needing extra review

  • Your combined revenue with affiliates is at or above the Qualifying User threshold.
  • You want to distribute model weights, a modified model, or a derivative component.
  • You are building or selling a commercial model or service whose operation falls outside the license grant.
  • Your use involves a prohibited category, required attribution, or another obligation in the current license text.
  • You are distributing a LoRA or other derivative and need to confirm that its source data and the license permit that distribution.

Uses outside the grant, including some commercial model, derivative, or distribution activities, require a separate license from Black Forest Labs. Read the current FLUX Kommunity License before launching a paid service, shipping an integrated product, or distributing weights or adapters.

Which setup is right for your goal?

Goal Recommended checkpoint or format Key constraint
Try local generation on a modest RTX card Supported INT8 build Black Forest Labs cites as little as 8GB VRAM; loader and workload still matter.
Highest-precision local experimentation Base or distilled BF16 Plan for about 31GB peak in the cited setups.
Lower-memory inference with a compatible backend FP8 or NVFP4 Use only a loader that supports the selected quantization.
Train a LoRA Base Training memory is higher and different from inference peak figures.
Generate or edit without training Distilled It is intended for inference and editing, not the documented LoRA-training path.
Deploy a paid image-generation service Any technically suitable checkpoint Confirm Qualifying User status and every license, derivative, distribution, and prohibited-use condition first.

Capabilities worth testing

Text-to-image

Describe the subject, style, lighting, camera or viewpoint, and relationships between objects. Because the model also supports text rendering, include the exact wording and placement requirements when generating posters, labels, interface mockups, or signs, then inspect the output for spelling and layout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Single-reference editing

Provide one source image and state which properties should change and which must remain. Be explicit about identity, pose, background, color, and composition so the edit instruction does not accidentally request a complete redraw.

Multi-reference generation

Use several references when the result must combine distinct inputs, such as a product from one image and a scene from another. Explain each reference’s role instead of assuming the model will infer which visual details take priority.

Bounding-box prompting

Use the 0–1000 grid to give approximate object coordinates. This is useful for layouts with several subjects, but it is still a generation control rather than a guarantee of pixel-perfect placement.

Before you publish or sell an output

  • Confirm which checkpoint and quantization produced it and retain the model and adapter versions used.
  • Verify that your business meets the license’s Qualifying User revenue definition, including affiliates.
  • Check attribution, prohibited-use, derivative, and distribution requirements in the current license.
  • Review people, logos, artwork, product designs, and reference images for third-party rights.
  • Keep a human review step for text rendering, factual claims, safety-sensitive content, and client requirements.
