Flutter can run eligible AI models locally through compatible inference runtimes, or it can serve as the client interface for inference hosted on an NVIDIA Jetson device. These are separate architectures: Flutter’s core framework is not an inference engine, and the reviewed official documentation does not describe a turnkey Flutter-to-Jetson bridge. Choose the execution location first, then match the model, runtime, hardware, and service design to it.
Choose where inference will run
The central decision is whether the model executes on the device running your Flutter app or on a Jetson computer. In the first design, the app bundles or obtains a compatible model and invokes an inference runtime on the user’s device. In the second, Jetson hosts the model and inference service while Flutter presents controls and sends requests across a separately designed interface.
| Decision factor | Inference inside the Flutter app | Jetson-hosted inference with Flutter client |
|---|---|---|
| Execution location | User device, using a runtime supported for its platform | NVIDIA Jetson host; Flutter is the client only when an API or other service boundary is implemented |
| Compatibility | Must align operating system, runtime engine, artifact format, model capability, and device resources | Must align the model and deployment with the Jetson software and hardware; the Flutter client must align with the service API |
| Connectivity and data | Inference can happen on-device; model acquisition or other app features may still require connectivity | Requests need a network path to the host, and the data sent to that service must be considered |
| Operational work | Package, store, update, and validate models and runtimes across supported client devices | Deploy and monitor the service, secure access, handle connectivity and long-running requests, and keep client and server behavior compatible |
These are architectural trade-offs, not benchmark results. Neither approach is automatically faster, more private, or easier in every deployment; the answer depends on the model, client devices, network, workload, and operational requirements.
Run a model locally in Flutter
Flutter can support on-device inference through opt-in packages that provide or connect to runtimes. Flutter Edge AI describes support across Android, iOS, web, and desktop, with runtime choices including LiteRT-LM, MediaPipe, ONNX, and operating-system-provided model paths. The set of available models and features varies by runtime and platform. See Flutter Edge AI’s getting-started guide and installation documentation.

Check the model and runtime together
Do not assume that a model will work merely because its filename looks familiar or because it is described as an NVIDIA model. Flutter Edge AI’s model documentation says the declared file type selects the engine, so the artifact, selected engine, target platform, and model capability must agree. Consult the model documentation and capabilities matrix before choosing an artifact.
Capabilities are not interchangeable: support for text generation does not imply support for embeddings or speech on the same runtime. Also account for model size, available memory, storage and download needs, and whether the platform’s operating-system model path is available for your users.
Use Flutter’s AI Toolkit for the right job
Flutter’s AI Toolkit documentation describes UI components for building AI-powered features; a UI toolkit is not itself proof that a particular model or inference engine is supported. Evaluate the toolkit and the inference runtime as separate parts of the app architecture. See Flutter AI Toolkit documentation.

Use Jetson as the inference host
NVIDIA positions Jetson as an edge-computing platform. Its developer kits are for developing and testing software on Jetson-based products, while JetPack is the software suite for developing and deploying Jetson edge applications. NVIDIA’s Jetson developer-kit overview explains that role.
In a Jetson-hosted design, your application needs a service boundary that you design and validate. Flutter can provide the user interface and client behavior, but the reviewed official sources do not specify a Flutter package, API, transport, or protocol that directly connects an app to Jetson.
Define the service contract before building the client
Decide what the Flutter client sends, what the Jetson service returns, and how the two handle requests that take time or fail. The concrete choices depend on the project; no single network recipe is established by the cited documentation. At minimum, design and test:

Test the model on the actual Jetson configuration and expected workload. A product-level hardware specification is not a throughput guarantee for a particular model or application.
Interpret Jetson specifications carefully
NVIDIA advertises the Jetson Orin Nano series at up to 67 TOPS of AI performance, with configurable power options from 7 W to 25 W on its Jetson modules page. These are vendor specifications, not a benchmark for a named model, a Flutter workload, or a complete system under a specific deployment condition. Select and validate hardware against the model and workload you intend to run.

Software releases change. At the time of the cited release snapshot, NVIDIA’s JetPack downloads and notes page listed JetPack 7.2.1 with Jetson Linux 39.2.1 and CUDA 13.2.2. Check that page for the current release and compatibility details before selecting a deployment stack; those version numbers are not a timeless requirement for every Jetson project.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Choose local inference when a compatible runtime and model are available for every target platform and the client devices can meet the model’s resource needs.
- Choose Jetson-hosted inference when the model and workload belong on a separate edge computer and you can build, secure, and operate the service that connects it to Flutter.
- Validate compatibility by checking platform, engine, artifact format, and capability together rather than relying on a model name or extension.
- Validate the full system with the actual target hardware, model, network conditions, and expected workload before committing to the architecture.
