The flu shot and the COVID-19 vaccine protect against different viruses, so neither replaces the other. Seasonal flu vaccines target selected influenza viruses; COVID-19 vaccines target SARS-CoV-2. Both can lower the risk of serious illness, hospitalization, and death, but neither guarantees that you will avoid infection. In the United States, the two vaccines can be given at the same visit.

Here is how their targets, protection, and current recommendations differ—and what to do if symptoms leave you unsure which virus you have.

How the flu shot and COVID vaccine compare

Question Seasonal flu vaccine COVID-19 vaccine
What does it target? Selected influenza viruses expected to circulate during that season. For the 2025–2026 U.S. season, CDC described the vaccines as trivalent, targeting influenza A(H1N1), A(H3N2), and influenza B/Victoria lineage viruses. SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.
Does it protect against the other illness? No. It does not protect against COVID-19 or other non-influenza viruses that can cause flu-like symptoms. No. It is not an influenza vaccine and does not protect against flu.
Can infection still happen? Yes. Effectiveness varies by season, how well the selected strains match viruses circulating, and recipient factors. Yes. Protection and effectiveness change over time. Vaccination can help prevent illness and can make illness shorter or less severe if infection occurs.
What serious outcomes can it help reduce? Flu illness, hospitalization, and death. Severe COVID-19, hospitalization, and death; CDC also says vaccination reduces the chance of Long COVID.
Can you get it at the same appointment as the other vaccine? Yes. CDC says flu and COVID vaccines can be administered at the same visit. Yes. CDC says flu and COVID vaccines can be administered at the same visit.

There is no meaningful “which is better?” ranking: each vaccine addresses a different infection. If you want protection against both influenza and COVID-19, one does not stand in for the other.

What does a flu shot protect you from?

A seasonal flu vaccine is designed to protect against selected influenza viruses—not every virus that causes fever, cough, aches, or other flu-like symptoms. For the 2025–2026 U.S. season, CDC said the vaccines were trivalent: they targeted influenza A(H1N1), influenza A(H3N2), and influenza B/Victoria lineage viruses. Vaccine composition is selected ahead of a season, based on which viruses are expected to circulate.

Influenza viruses can change, and the strains included in a vaccine may not match circulating strains perfectly. CDC calls these changes antigenic drift. A weaker match can reduce effectiveness against a particular virus, but it does not mean the vaccine provides no benefit: CDC says vaccination may still protect against other included viruses and against severe flu illness, hospitalization, and death.

Flu vaccination is intended to reduce risk, not create an impermeable shield. A vaccinated person can still get influenza. CDC explains that effectiveness varies by season and strain match, as well as recipient factors. The 2025–2026 formulation is a season-specific example, not a description of every later season; check current CDC flu guidance for the formulation in effect when you are deciding about vaccination.

In everyday terms, “flu shot” refers to the seasonal influenza vaccine, not a general vaccine against any respiratory illness that feels like the flu. CDC specifically notes that influenza vaccines do not protect against infection or illness caused by other viruses that can cause similar symptoms, including SARS-CoV-2. That distinction matters because cough, fever, and body aches do not by themselves identify which virus is responsible.

What does a COVID-19 vaccine protect you from?

COVID-19 vaccines target SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. They do not target influenza, so a COVID-19 vaccine cannot substitute for a seasonal flu vaccine. Likewise, a flu vaccine does not protect against SARS-CoV-2. CDC’s flu-vaccine guidance explicitly distinguishes influenza from other viruses that can cause similar symptoms.

COVID vaccination can help prevent illness, but it cannot guarantee that you will not become infected. CDC says that if infection occurs, vaccination may make the illness shorter and less severe. Protection and measured effectiveness change over time, so a result reported for an earlier vaccine season should not be treated as the expected effect of a later one.

CDC also says vaccinated people who later get COVID-19 are less likely to develop Long COVID than people who are unvaccinated or not up to date. That is a reduction in risk, not a guarantee that a vaccinated person will not develop Long COVID.

So the answer to “Does the flu shot protect against COVID?” is no; the answer to “Does the COVID vaccine protect against flu?” is also no. The vaccines are designed for different viruses. Getting one does not remove the reason to consider the other, and receiving both does not mean either one has become a broad shield against all respiratory infections.

What “protection” means—and what it does not

For both vaccines, protection means lowering the chance of an outcome. It does not mean a vaccinated person cannot be infected, cannot pass a virus to someone else, or will have the same level of protection indefinitely. CDC’s respiratory-virus immunization guidance says vaccination can reduce the chance of infection, while its main strength is preventing severe illness and death. The practical value therefore includes reducing serious outcomes even when infection still occurs.

Effectiveness figures need context. They are estimates from defined seasons and populations, not a universal score for a vaccine or a direct head-to-head comparison between the flu and COVID vaccines. Flu effectiveness varies with the match between vaccine strains and circulating influenza viruses. COVID vaccine effectiveness also changes over time. Comparing a flu estimate from one season with a COVID estimate from another would not establish that one vaccine is inherently stronger.

Historical U.S. estimates illustrate why context matters

  • For the 2019–2020 U.S. influenza season, CDC estimated that flu vaccination prevented 7 million influenza illnesses, 3 million influenza-associated medical visits, 100,000 influenza-associated hospitalizations, and 7,000 influenza-associated deaths. These are historical season estimates, not predictions for a current season.
  • For adults 18 and older during the 2023–2024 COVID-19 vaccine season, CDC reported almost 70% lower risk of critical illness in the first two months and about 50% lower risk over ten months. The decline over time illustrates waning protection; these figures are not estimates for the 2026–2027 season.
  • For adults 18 and older during the 2023–2024 season, CDC also reported about 50% lower COVID-19 hospitalization risk in the first two months and about 30% over ten months. These are historical, population- and season-specific estimates, not a current-season forecast.

The flu and COVID figures above come from different measures and seasons; they should not be read as a contest or a like-for-like effectiveness comparison. CDC’s 2023–2024 COVID results describe adults 18 and older, while the influenza totals are estimates of outcomes prevented across the U.S. population in 2019–2020.

These figures also answer a different question from whether a specific person will avoid infection. The influenza estimates count illnesses and related outcomes estimated to have been prevented across a U.S. season. The COVID percentages describe relative differences in risk for adults in a particular vaccine season and show how measured protection changed over time. They are useful illustrations of public-health benefit, but they are not a personal forecast or a guarantee of what will happen after vaccination.

When reading any vaccine-effectiveness number, keep three details together: which season it refers to, which population was studied, and which outcome was measured. “Lower risk of hospitalization,” for example, is not the same endpoint as “lower risk of infection.” A number without those details can be misleading, particularly when comparing two vaccines that target separate viruses and are assessed using different measures.

Who is advised to get each vaccine in the United States?

Recommendations are specific to geography, season, age, and individual health circumstances, and they can change. The guidance summarized here is U.S.-focused and reflects CDC information available in October 2026; it should not be assumed to apply in another country.

Seasonal flu vaccine

CDC recommends a flu vaccine every season for everyone 6 months and older, with rare exceptions. Because the vaccine composition is selected for each season, look to the current season’s CDC guidance rather than assuming the previous season’s strains still describe the vaccine being offered.

COVID-19 vaccine

On its COVID-19 benefits page dated October 8, 2026, CDC says a 2026–2027 COVID-19 vaccine is recommended for adults 18 and older. For children ages 6 months through 17 years who are moderately to severely immunocompromised, CDC recommends vaccination. For other children in that age group, CDC recommends vaccination through shared clinical decision-making.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shared clinical decision-making means the choice is considered in light of the child’s circumstances rather than inferred from age alone. Personal medical history, immune status, and individual risk-benefit considerations can matter. If you are unsure how current guidance applies to you or a child, consult a healthcare professional and check CDC’s current recommendations.

The two recommendations are not framed identically. CDC describes seasonal flu vaccination as recommended for everyone 6 months and older, with rare exceptions. Its 2026–2027 COVID guidance distinguishes adults from children and uses shared clinical decision-making for children who are not moderately to severely immunocompromised. Do not assume that a recommendation for one vaccine automatically answers whether the other is recommended for a particular person.

For a practical check, start with the current season and the person’s age; for the COVID guidance for children, also note whether the child is moderately to severely immunocompromised. Then use CDC’s current recommendations and a healthcare professional to discuss how individual circumstances affect the decision. The guidance and vaccine formulations can change, so the dates and details above should be treated as time-specific, not permanent rules.

Can you get the flu shot and COVID vaccine at the same time?

Yes. CDC says flu and COVID vaccines can be administered at the same visit. That makes it possible to ask about receiving both during one appointment rather than treating one as a replacement for the other. If you have personal concerns about timing or your circumstances, discuss them with a healthcare provider.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Same-visit administration is a practical option, not a requirement to receive both together. The important point for this comparison is that CDC permits coadministration; the vaccines still target separate viruses and offer separate protection. If you are planning an appointment, you can ask the healthcare provider or vaccination site whether both are appropriate for you under current recommendations.

If you have symptoms, how can you tell which virus you have?

Symptoms alone may not tell you whether you have influenza or COVID-19, and vaccination against one does not rule out infection with the other. CDC says home tests are available that detect influenza A and B and SARS-CoV-2 in upper respiratory specimens. CDC does not provide specific guidance on using at-home flu tests, so follow the test’s instructions and seek medical advice when needed.

A combination test that checks for influenza A and B as well as SARS-CoV-2 may be useful when the question is which of these viruses could be involved. Check the test labeling to confirm which viruses it detects and follow the directions provided with that test. The existence of a home test does not change the vaccine comparison: a flu vaccine does not prevent COVID, and a COVID vaccine does not prevent flu.

If you are at higher risk of serious flu complications and develop flu-like symptoms, CDC advises seeking medical care promptly. A clinician can help determine whether antiviral treatment is needed. Do not assume that a flu-like illness is flu—or that vaccination against either virus rules out the other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For that reason, symptoms and vaccination history should not be treated as a definitive way to identify the virus. If you feel ill, consider whether testing or medical advice is appropriate for your circumstances. CDC’s specific advice is especially time-sensitive for people at higher risk of serious flu complications: seek care promptly when flu-like symptoms develop so a healthcare professional can determine whether antiviral treatment is needed.

How to use this comparison when making a decision

  1. Identify the protection you are asking about. For seasonal influenza, the relevant vaccine is the flu vaccine; for SARS-CoV-2, it is the COVID-19 vaccine.
  2. Check the guidance for your season and circumstances. Recommendations and vaccine formulations can change, and children’s COVID recommendations differ according to age and immune status.
  3. Think in terms of reduced risk, not guaranteed prevention. Either vaccine may reduce serious outcomes without preventing every infection.
  4. Ask about receiving both during one visit. CDC permits coadministration of flu and COVID vaccines; a healthcare professional can address personal questions.
  5. Get assessed promptly if you are at higher risk and become ill. For flu-like symptoms in someone at higher risk of serious flu complications, CDC recommends prompt medical care to determine whether antiviral treatment is needed.

In short, decide based on the infection you want protection against, then check the current recommendation for your age and circumstances. If your goal is protection against both influenza and COVID-19, treat the vaccines as separate tools rather than alternatives. If you develop symptoms, do not use vaccination against one virus as evidence that the other is impossible; testing and timely medical advice may help clarify what to do.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a flu shot protect you from?

A seasonal flu vaccine is designed to protect against selected influenza viruses expected to circulate during that season. For the 2025–2026 U.S. season, CDC described the vaccines as targeting influenza A(H1N1), A(H3N2), and influenza B/Victoria lineage viruses. It does not protect against SARS-CoV-2 or every other virus that can cause flu-like symptoms.

Does the flu shot protect against COVID-19?

No. The flu vaccine targets influenza viruses, not SARS-CoV-2. A COVID-19 vaccine also does not protect against influenza, so neither vaccine replaces the other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I get a flu shot and COVID vaccine at the same time?

Yes. CDC says flu and COVID vaccines can be administered at the same visit. Ask a healthcare professional about personal concerns or how current recommendations apply to you.

Do these vaccines prevent infection or just severe illness?

Vaccination can reduce the chance of infection, but neither vaccine guarantees that you will avoid infection. CDC describes the main strength of respiratory-virus vaccination as preventing severe illness and death. Flu vaccination can reduce flu illness, hospitalization, and death; COVID vaccination can reduce severe illness, hospitalization, and death, and CDC says it also lowers the chance of Long COVID.

Can I still get flu or COVID after vaccination?

Yes. Breakthrough infections can happen. Flu vaccine effectiveness varies by season, strain match, and recipient factors. COVID vaccine protection and measured effectiveness change over time. Vaccination can still reduce the risk of serious outcomes even when it does not prevent every infection.

What should I do if I have flu-like symptoms after getting vaccinated?

Vaccination against one virus does not rule out infection with that virus or the other one. CDC says home tests are available that detect influenza A and B and SARS-CoV-2 in upper respiratory specimens; follow the test instructions. If you are at higher risk of serious flu complications and develop flu-like symptoms, seek medical care promptly to determine whether antiviral treatment is needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who is advised to get these vaccines in the United States?

CDC recommends a seasonal flu vaccine every season for everyone 6 months and older, with rare exceptions. CDC’s October 8, 2026 guidance says a 2026–2027 COVID-19 vaccine is recommended for adults 18 and older. For children ages 6 months through 17 years, CDC recommends COVID vaccination for those who are moderately to severely immunocompromised and recommends it for other children through shared clinical decision-making. Check current CDC guidance because recommendations can change.

The Bottom Line

The flu shot protects against selected influenza viruses; the COVID-19 vaccine targets SARS-CoV-2. Neither protects against the other illness, and neither guarantees that infection will not happen. Both are intended to reduce serious outcomes, and CDC says they can be given at the same visit. Check current U.S. recommendations for the season and your circumstances, and seek prompt care for flu-like symptoms if you are at higher risk of serious flu complications.
