Flowkey is the piano app described by recent deal reports: it listens through your device microphone or a MIDI connection, identifies notes as you play, and flags a wrong note immediately. PCWorld’s DealPost Team reported a five-year subscription at $79.99 on September 29, 2026; BleepingComputer Deals reported the same price on August 29, 2026, alongside a stated regular price of $899. Both reports warn that pricing and availability can change, and neither confirms that the offer is still available at checkout on October 17, 2026.

What the $80 piano app actually is

The offer is for software, not a hardware keyboard. Flowkey’s listening feature turns a phone, tablet or computer into a practice monitor. You play an on-screen lesson or song, and the app evaluates the notes arriving through either a microphone or a MIDI connection.

PCWorld described the central behavior this way: “As you play, the app listens through a microphone or MIDI connection and flags a wrong note the moment it happens.” That makes it different from a video lesson that simply plays along while you practice; the app is intended to react to your performance note by note.

How flowkey’s real-time feedback works

Microphone or MIDI input

With microphone input, the app hears an acoustic piano or keyboard through the device’s microphone. Room noise, pedal sounds and the distance between the instrument and microphone can affect detection. A MIDI connection sends note data directly from a compatible digital piano or keyboard, avoiding the uncertainty of acoustic sound recognition.

For a digital piano, a USB MIDI cable can provide a direct connection when the instrument has the required USB-MIDI port and the cable matches your phone, tablet or computer. Official Piano AI documentation describes USB MIDI as enabling precise, zero-latency note tracking; that is a connection claim, not an independent test of flowkey.

Immediate note checking

The reported workflow is simple: play a passage, receive an instant indication when a note is wrong or missed, then try it again. The reports do not establish an independent accuracy benchmark, so treat the feedback as a practice aid rather than a laboratory-grade assessment.

Practice controls for difficult passages

  • Wait Mode: pauses progression until you play the correct note, allowing you to work at your own pace.
  • Slow playback: reduces the playback speed so you can learn a passage before restoring normal tempo.
  • Looping: repeats a difficult bar or section instead of making you restart the entire piece.
  • Separate-hand practice: lets you isolate the left or right hand before combining them.

What is included in the reported Classic plan

The cited 2026 reports say the Classic plan contains more than 1,000 classical and public-domain songs. The catalog is described as spanning beginner, intermediate, advanced and pro levels, so the selection is intended to cover progression rather than a single skill band. The reports do not provide a complete catalog or guarantee that every listed piece remains available throughout a subscription.

How to set it up

  1. Choose your input method. Use the device microphone for an acoustic piano or a keyboard without a suitable digital connection. Choose MIDI if your digital piano supports it.
  2. Connect the keyboard, if applicable. Attach a compatible USB MIDI cable to the piano and your device, using the appropriate adapter if your device requires one.
  3. Allow audio or MIDI access. Grant the app microphone permission for acoustic listening, or select the connected MIDI device when prompted.
  4. Start with a slower passage. Pick a song at your level and use Wait Mode or slow playback to confirm that notes are being recognized before increasing speed.
  5. Isolate problem sections. Loop the bars that trigger errors and practice each hand separately, then return to both hands at the target tempo.

Flowkey compared with another listening app

PlayPiano represents a different listening-app approach. Its App Store listing says it grades every note as it happens and reports timing, note length, dynamics, chords, evenness and pedal, with USB or Bluetooth MIDI keyboard support. The available descriptions do not establish equivalent repertoire, subscription duration or current pricing for PlayPiano.

Is the five-year $79.99 price still available?

The $79.99 figure is time-sensitive. PCWorld’s report is dated September 29, 2026, and BleepingComputer Deals’ report is dated August 29, 2026. BleepingComputer also presented $899 as the regular price, but that comparison is part of its deal listing and should not be treated as a permanently established retail price. Check the final checkout screen, the subscription length and the cancellation terms before paying.

A five-year term lowers the effective annual cost if you use the service for the full period, but it also commits you for much longer than a monthly or annual plan. Confirm that the account is purchasing the intended Classic plan, not a shorter trial or a renewing option with different terms.

Who should consider it

  • Beginners: Wait Mode and graded note feedback can make it easier to stay with a lesson instead of repeatedly losing your place.
  • Returning players: Slow playback, looping and hand isolation provide a structured way to rebuild technique.
  • Digital-piano owners: MIDI is the clearest path to consistent note detection when the keyboard and device are compatible.
  • Acoustic-piano players: Microphone listening avoids extra hardware, but placement and room noise may affect recognition.

The reports establish the app’s features and advertised deal, not a measured improvement in learning outcomes. Consider the subscription for its feedback and practice tools, not as a substitute for a teacher or a guarantee of faster progress.
