Flow-electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) has removed more than 98% of salt from real seawater in a 2025 experiment, but that result is not evidence of a commercial-scale plant. The technology’s circulating particle electrodes and stackable membrane modules make larger systems plausible; published work still describes experimental designs and pilot-oriented development, with energy use, cost, and long-term operation unresolved.

How flow-electrode desalination works

FCDI adapts capacitive deionization by placing ion-exchange membranes between saline feedwater and electrode chambers. Instead of fixed electrodes, it circulates a slurry containing conductive particles, typically carbon-based. When an electric field is applied, ions move through the membranes from the feed into the slurry. The feed loses salt, while the flowing electrodes carry away the accumulated ionic charge.

Circulating electrodes can be managed continuously, and the membranes can be assembled into larger stacks. Those features motivate scale-up research, but performance depends on the cell and membrane arrangement, feed salinity, voltage, flow rates, and how the slurry is circulated and handled. A review of the field discusses these design and commercialization considerations in Environmental Science & Technology.

What real-seawater tests have demonstrated

Multistage treatment

A 2025 multistage study tested real seawater using stages with graded electric fields and electrode salinity. Under its optimized conditions, it reported more than 98% salt removal, specific energy consumption of 21.3–22.1 kWh/m³, and a product-stream pH around 8.5. Tested multistage configurations exceeded 99% removal, and the paper reported lower energy use than single-stage operation. These figures describe that study’s conditions, not guaranteed performance across seawater sources or commercial plants. See the 2025 study in Desalination.

All-channel slurry circulation

A September 2026 study tested an architecture that circulated activated-carbon slurry through both the electrode chambers and solution channels, aiming to reduce resistance and improve ion transport. With 15 wt.% activated carbon, it reported a 13.3% higher salt-removal rate and a 14.2% improvement in energy-normalized removed salt compared with standard FCDI under the study’s test conditions. The work included real-seawater experiments and 72-hour cyclic testing; that duration is not long-term field validation. The authors describe the four-chamber design and results in their 2026 Desalination paper.

How far scale-up has progressed

Published scale-up evidence includes larger membrane assemblies and module studies, but the reported examples are not equivalent to a municipal seawater plant. The feed type matters: some useful scale-up measurements came from brackish-water desalination, not seawater treatment.

Study and configuration Reported result What it establishes
2019 membrane-stack study Energy efficiency of 13.8–20.2% and productivity above 100 L·m⁻²·h⁻¹ in a reported desalting example using brackish feed. PubMed record Semi-continuous operation and stack effects, not those figures as seawater performance. The study found that adding membrane pairs could reduce current efficiency, likely as electrodialysis effects became more significant.
2020 membrane-current-collector assembly Module-average salt-removal rate of 0.3–0.44 µmol/(cm²·min). PubMed record A module-level result close to the study’s classic-FCDI comparison. The authors described lower infrastructure investment, device size, and energy cost for the proposed design; these are reported findings, not independently established commercial savings.
2024 pilot-oriented module and stack 320 cm² membrane cross-section, 20 membrane-electrode assembly units, and membrane area 260 times that of a typical lab setup; specific salt transfer rate of 1.1 µmol/(min·cm²). Desalination study A methodology for moving toward pilot-scale assessment. The reported transfer rate was within the range of lab-scale systems, and the study did not demonstrate a full-scale operating plant.

Taken together, these studies show that FCDI can be assembled beyond a small laboratory cell and that real-seawater salt removal has been demonstrated. They do not establish sustained operation, throughput, product-water quality, or economics at municipal scale.

What still needs to be proven

  • Energy on a comparable basis: Reported energy depends on operating conditions and system boundaries. Meaningful comparisons need to account consistently for source-water salinity, target product-water salinity, recovery, throughput, pretreatment, pumping, and concentrate handling.
  • Reliable operation: Slurry stability and circulation, membrane-stack effects, fouling or clogging, and concentrate management all affect practical performance. A 72-hour test is encouraging experimental evidence, not proof of years of operation.
  • Plant economics: Capital and operating costs remain open questions. Module-level cost claims do not establish the cost of a complete seawater plant, including supporting equipment and ongoing operation.
  • Commercial deployment: Reviews identify scale-up and commercialization as unresolved challenges, alongside operating and capital costs. Earlier scale-up work also flags water production, energy consumption, and cell configuration as concerns. The field review outlines these barriers in Environmental Science & Technology.

How FCDI compares with reverse osmosis

Reverse osmosis (RO) is an established seawater-desalination process, but a fair comparison with FCDI requires matched feed salinity, product-water target, recovery, treatment capacity, and energy boundaries—including pretreatment and pumping—as well as concentrate handling and capital and operating costs. A 2024 energetic comparison models FCDI against RO plant data and discusses possible seawater applicability after scale-up. It is a modeling assessment, not proof that FCDI already outperforms commercial seawater RO. Read the 2024 comparison in Environmental Science & Technology.

What the evidence means for large-scale desalination

Flow electrodes offer a credible engineering route for building larger capacitive-deionization systems, and recent experiments show substantial salt removal from real seawater. The evidence supports continued scale-up work—not a claim that FCDI is already a proven replacement for established seawater-desalination plants. Whether it becomes practical at that scale depends on demonstrating reliable, economical operation under comparable real-world conditions.
