Flow reactors offered chemists a different way to run reactions: rather than mix materials in a vessel and wait for the batch to finish, they continuously pump reactants through temperature-controlled tubing or channels. At the first Uniqsis Flow Chemistry Symposium in Cambridge in 2007, the company launched its FlowSyn reactor amid interest in automation, reproducibility and faster development. Those were potential advantages, not guarantees—and the launch price and investment figures reported at the time are historical, not current market data.
What is flow chemistry?
In conventional batch synthesis, chemists combine reactants in a flask or other vessel, allow the reaction to proceed, then process the resulting mixture. In continuous-flow chemistry, pumps feed reactants and solvents through tubes or channels, where the reaction takes place as the material moves through the system. The channels can be heated or cooled to control reaction conditions.
The distinction is about how material moves through a reaction, not simply whether equipment is automated. A batch process handles a charge of material at a time; a flow process continuously feeds material through the reactor. Which approach is suitable depends on the chemistry and operating conditions.
How did flow reactors compare with batch chemistry?
| Factor | Batch approach | Continuous-flow approach |
|---|---|---|
| Operating mode | Reactants are combined and processed in a vessel as a batch. | Reactants and solvents are continuously pumped through tubes or channels. |
| Process control and automation | The 2007 report characterized conventional synthesis as skilled, manual work. | The report presented automation as a potential benefit of flow equipment, not a guaranteed result for every process. |
| Reproducibility | The report contrasted batch output with flow’s potential for more consistent results. | Flow was described as offering reproducibility; actual performance depends on the chemistry and operation. |
| Scale-up and development | The report discussed challenges in moving chemistry toward production during drug development. | It presented flow as a possible way to make scale-up easier during development, not as a universal replacement for batch manufacturing. |
| By-products and purification | Reaction conditions can affect by-product formation and subsequent processing. | The report said flow may reduce by-product formation under some conditions. It does not establish that flow eliminates by-products or purification. |
| Operational risks | Not specified in the 2007 report’s comparison. | Leaks and blockages can occur if a flow system is not operated correctly. |
Mark Ladlow, described in the 2007 report as a former colleague of flow-synthesis pioneer Steve Ley, illustrated the contrast with a beverage analogy: “I think of batch chemistry like making a cup of tea – a skilled, manual job with a variable output, and we know that some people make an awful cup of tea,” while “Flow synthesis is like an espresso machine – automated, reproducible, and fast.” The comparison captures the enthusiasm around flow at the time; it is Ladlow’s characterization, not an independent performance finding.

Why did researchers show interest in flow?
The 2007 report presented flow systems as a way to automate reactions and potentially improve reproducibility and speed. It also suggested that flow could reduce by-product formation in some conditions and help researchers scale up chemistry during drug development. These are conditional benefits: the report does not establish that every reaction is faster, cleaner or easier to scale in a flow reactor.
The report also described a major research commitment: Novartis had invested $65 million for ten years of flow-technology research at MIT, which the article gave as approximately £32 million. These are figures reported in 2007 and should not be read as current investment or as a measure of today’s market.

What should laboratories weigh before using a flow reactor?
- Fit to the chemistry: Flow’s potential advantages depend on the reaction and its operating conditions; the 2007 account does not support treating it as categorically better than batch.
- Control and operation: A continuous feed and temperature-controlled channels can support controlled operation, but the system must be run correctly.
- Blockages and leaks: The report explicitly identifies both as hazards when flow systems are not operated correctly.
- Development goals: The historical case for flow emphasized automation, repeatability, speed and development-scale-up potential. These should be evaluated for a particular process rather than assumed.
- Evidence date: The symposium, Novartis investment figure and FlowSyn launch price belong to the 2007 report. They do not establish current market conditions.
