Solar panels alone generally do not keep a home powered when the grid fails: the system needs battery storage and transfer equipment configured to supply the home or selected circuits. Reports from Florida’s 2024 hurricanes show why that distinction matters. A report about Hunters Point describes an 86-home development in Cortez whose solar-and-battery homes stayed cool, lit, and online, while other customer accounts show that backup scope and storm duration determine what a system can actually sustain.

What the Hunters Point report says—and what it does not establish

The matching article’s search listing identifies Hunters Point in Cortez as an 86-home development with rooftop solar panels and batteries in garages, designed to keep homes functioning when utility power is shut off. That is the basis for the report that the homes stayed cool, lit, and online during Helene and Milton. The listing does not establish individual system sizes, outage durations, indoor temperatures, or how connectivity was maintained, so those details should not be inferred.

The development’s account is one reported example, not a measurement of how all Florida solar-and-battery homes performed. Separate customer and company accounts offer useful context, but they describe different populations and should not be treated as independent statewide results.

How solar and battery backup work in an outage

A battery stores electricity and an inverter supplies household-usable AC power. Transfer equipment isolates the backed-up circuits from the utility during an outage, then reconnects them when grid service returns. Solar panels can potentially recharge the battery during daylight, but whether they do so depends on the system configuration and actual sunlight. A battery without solar generally cannot recharge from the utility while the grid is down, so it has only its stored energy until service returns.

Backed-up circuits are not necessarily the whole home

The word “battery” does not guarantee that every appliance will run. Solar United Neighbors’ 2024 guide describes Florida homeowners Steven Murphy and Betty Jo Henson, who added solar and a 10 kW battery after a two-week outage during Hurricane Charley in 2004. Their battery served six circuits and most of the home, but not the guest rooms, stove, dryer, or central air conditioning. They used a portable air conditioner that could run from the battery. Henson described the earlier outage as “It was miserable.”

This example illustrates the practical trade-off: a system may keep lights and selected essentials operating without supporting energy-intensive equipment such as central air conditioning. Whether a home can stay cool depends on which cooling equipment is backed up, its power demand, and the energy available—not simply on having rooftop panels and a battery.

What other Florida storm accounts report

A Sanibel customer during Helene

Florida Solar Design Group reported that a Sanibel customer’s battery-backed home operated through a Helene grid outage lasting more than 12 hours. The installer said the battery reached 55% before utility power returned at 7:02 a.m., with 45% used overnight. It also said solar would have recharged the battery during daylight while powering the home if the outage had continued. This is an installer’s account of one customer, not an independent test or a statewide result.

Sunnova customer figures after both storms

In an October 17, 2024 company release, Sunnova said 98% of its rooftop solar systems in affected areas were unaffected. It reported that its solar-plus-storage customers averaged 25 hours of battery power during the seven days after Milton’s landfall and 26 hours during the seven days after Helene. Sunnova also said its systems remained intact for approximately 19,000 Florida customers during Milton and more than 13,000 customers across the U.S. Southeast during Helene. These are vendor-reported figures for Sunnova’s customers and time windows, not an independent survey of Florida households; the averages do not say how many consecutive hours a particular home was powered.

Grid outages were widespread, but the figures cover different territories

Solar-and-battery accounts unfolded against major utility disruptions. The U.S. Department of Energy’s October 15, 2024 Milton situation report recorded 185,000 Florida customer outages as of 10 a.m. EDT, down from a peak of 3.4 million on October 10. DOE said Milton made landfall near Siesta Key on October 9 as a Category 3 hurricane.

For Helene, Florida Power & Light’s September 27, 2024 update said it had restored more than 589,000 customers and that approximately 100,000 remained without power in its service territory at the stated reporting time. FPL also estimated that its smart-grid technology avoided more than 140,000 outages. Those are FPL figures for its territory, not statewide utility totals.

How to judge whether a home battery can keep you comfortable

When evaluating an existing system or planning backup, focus on the actual loads and configuration rather than the battery label alone:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Backed-up loads: Confirm whether central air conditioning, refrigeration, lights, internet equipment, and other priority devices are on backed-up circuits. Ask specifically about high-demand appliances such as a stove or dryer.
  • Usable energy and expected duration: Ask how much battery capacity is available to the backed-up loads and what duration is estimated for a stated set of loads. The duration changes with consumption.
  • Solar charging during an outage: Verify that the system can operate and recharge from solar while isolated from the grid. Actual charging depends on sunlight and the equipment configuration.
  • Transfer and inverter setup: Confirm how the system disconnects from utility service and supplies the selected circuits, whether transfer is automatic, and what happens when utility power returns.
  • Partial-home or broader backup: Establish whether the system serves selected circuits or a broader panel. A partial-home setup can protect essentials while leaving major appliances or rooms without backup.

For cooling with a limited backup system, the Solar United Neighbors example shows one household using a portable air conditioner rather than central air. It does not establish a particular unit’s suitability; the device’s power draw must fit the system’s backed-up capacity.
