Yes—files on old floppy disks can still be recovered, including files from PCs that no longer work. The catch is that the disk’s size, format, condition, and the reader hardware all have to match. A USB floppy drive may read some 3.5-inch disks, but it will not read every format or a 5.25-inch disk. For valuable or damaged media, making an image with suitable equipment before repeated attempts is safer than treating a quick copy as guaranteed.
What is the 49-year-old storage format?
The likely reference is the floppy disk and the 1977 arrival of the Apple II, which came with two 5¼-inch floppy drives. That date is a milestone in personal computing, not the invention of the floppy: IBM says development began in 1967 and it began selling drives in 1971. IBM introduced its 3½-inch disk in 1986. At the format’s peak in the mid-1990s, more than 5 billion floppy disks were sold annually, according to IBM’s history of floppy disk storage.
The age of a disk does not by itself determine whether its files are recoverable. The practical question is whether the media is readable and whether you have hardware and software that understand its physical and logical format.

- Reminder: Not all of your disks can be read, which is due to their age, not the drive. Floppy disks were produced in the 1980s and 1990s and have a history of 30 to 40 years. Due to long storage times, some floppy disks may be corrupted, mouldy or dusty, so some of your floppy disks may not be successfully opened by our floppy disk drive, or the drive may initially be able to open some floppy disks but stop working due to dust on the disks. Therefore, please carefully check the status of the floppy disk before reading to avoid the drive stopping working due to floppy disk issues.
How to approach floppy recovery
1. Identify the physical disk
Check whether it is a 3.5-inch, 5.25-inch, or other disk. Do not buy or connect a reader based only on the fact that it is a “floppy drive”: drive size and controller support matter. A 3.5-inch USB reader is not a solution for 5.25-inch media.
2. Assess the disk before inserting it
Handle it by the edges, do not open its casing, and avoid dust, sunlight, strong magnetic fields, and temperature or humidity extremes. Let media adjust to room conditions before use. These precautions follow the National Archives’ guidance on machine-readable media. If the disk is visibly damaged or contaminated, stop rather than testing it in an ordinary drive.

3. Choose between copying files and making an image
If the disk is unimportant and appears healthy, a compatible drive may let you copy files directly. If the contents matter, minimize repeated attempts on the original and consider creating a disk image first. An image is a copy of the media that can be examined separately; preservation workflows may capture sectors or magnetic flux using specialist hardware and software. A captured raw stream is not automatically a usable set of files, and interpreting it can require additional format knowledge and tools. 4. Stop if the format or condition is beyond your setup
If the disk is 5.25-inch, uses an unfamiliar format, or fails in a compatible setup, further work may require a specialized drive, controller, imaging workflow, or recovery specialist. No universal recovery rate applies: the outcome depends on media condition, format, and available equipment. A USB drive or software download cannot guarantee that every disk will be readable.

A floppy beside a dead PC is different from a dead hard drive
If the files are on a floppy, the central requirements are compatible floppy-reading hardware and support for the disk format. If they are on the computer’s internal HDD, recovery instead depends on the drive’s condition, a suitable connection or imaging process, and software able to interpret its file system. Library of Congress preservation staff list FTK Imager or Guymager for hard-drive imaging and HFS Explorer for some older Mac-formatted drives in their software overview. Those examples are not a guarantee that a particular drive can be recovered.

Wet-media response is an emergency situation, not a routine cleaning task. The National Archives says not to freeze floppy disks, vacuum-dry them, or expose them to heat; its emergency guidance describes prompt cleaning and professional recovery as possible options. Follow the agency’s magnetic-media emergency guidance rather than trying improvised drying methods.
