Ten percent extra flooring is a common planning estimate, not a rule that fits every room. A simple straight layout may need less; diagonal, herringbone, or chevron patterns and awkward room shapes can require more. To estimate a purchase, measure the floor area, add a visible waste allowance, divide by the selected product’s carton coverage, and round up to whole cartons.
Why “add 10%” is only a starting point
Waste is flooring material beyond the area being covered. It accounts for cuts and offcuts, installation mistakes, product defects, and—in some projects—matching material saved for a future repair. The right allowance depends on the layout, room geometry, product instructions, and how much spare material you want to retain.
Pergo’s project planner uses a general 10% waste factor for cutting, installation errors, and variation in floor design. It separately recommends 15% for Pergo Hardwood, attributing that figure to an “NWFA regulation.” That is Pergo’s attribution; it should not be treated here as an independently verified, universal regulation. For a difficult room, the guide says more waste may be warranted. The sources do not provide a validated formula that predicts exact cut waste for every room plan, so treat a calculator’s percentage as an explicit assumption to adjust—not an exact forecast.
Measure the area that will actually receive flooring
- Measure each rectangular section. Record length and width in the same unit, then multiply them to get that section’s area.
- Break an irregular room into rectangles. Calculate each rectangle’s area and add the results rather than guessing at the overall shape.
- Include connected spaces being covered. Add closets, alcoves, and hallways if the flooring will continue into them.
- Measure stairs separately. The Flooring Institute guide recommends measuring per step because treads, risers, and nosings are individually cut. Treat this as the guide’s advice; stair treatment may depend on the product and installation plan.

Use the calculator as transparent arithmetic
A useful flooring calculator should show each part of the estimate rather than hiding a fixed “10% extra” assumption. Its inputs are measured area, a chosen waste percentage, and the exact product’s coverage per carton. The calculation is:
Adjusted area = measured area × (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100)

Cartons to order = adjusted area ÷ coverage per carton, rounded up to the next whole carton
For example, if the measured area is 500 square feet and you choose a 10% allowance, the adjusted area is 550 square feet. If the selected product covers 22 square feet per carton, 550 ÷ 22 = 25 cartons. If the division produces a fraction, round upward: flooring is sold in whole cartons. These are illustrative numbers, not a recommendation for a particular product or room.

A calculator can let you change the waste percentage to model a straight, diagonal, or patterned layout, or to account for room complexity and a desired repair reserve. The Flooring Institute calculator uses corresponding layout presets, but a preset does not replace the selected product’s instructions or an installer’s assessment. Before ordering, check the product and the assumptions
- Confirm carton coverage from the exact product. Coverage can vary by product; use the figure on its current product or carton information, not a generic value.
- Read that product’s installation instructions. A general calculator or planner cannot account for every product-specific requirement. Pergo explicitly cautions that its planner may not fit every installation.
- Choose an allowance that matches the actual layout. Use layout-based figures only as starting points, and account for unusual shapes and obstacles.
- Decide whether to retain spare flooring. If you want matching material for a later repair, include that in the order beyond what the installation itself may consume.
- Recheck the measured scope. Make sure all covered connected spaces are included and that the units and carton coverage use the same area system.
The estimate is a purchasing calculation, not a guarantee of installed waste. If the flooring type, product, or layout has special requirements, follow its installation guidance or ask the installer to confirm the order.
