Flipping Is Hard is a 3D physics-based precision platformer in which you control Flippy, a phone trapped in a storm drain. You rotate the phone and trigger a vibration jump to climb through the Trashlands and reunite with Jeff. The central challenge is deliberate movement, recovery after falls, and learning how each surface responds to torque—not conventional running or jumping.
What is Flipping Is Hard?
Flipping Is Hard is being developed and published by Elegant Horse Studios with Dawn Wood Games. Its premise is intentionally simple: Flippy has fallen into a storm drain and must climb back to Jeff. The journey takes place in the Trashlands, where the environment functions as a physics puzzle as much as a platforming course.
The Steam store listing describes the game with the tagline “No Legs. Just Flips.” That phrase captures the control philosophy. Flippy does not walk, run, or jump in the usual way. The listing explains: “Flippy doesn’t have legs… Your only movements are rotation and a vibration jump.” The developer refers to this as torque-driven flipping.

The advertised objective is to reach the top of the climb across ten areas, then complete the story goal of getting Flippy back to Jeff.

How do you move in Flipping Is Hard?
Rotation is your primary movement
Your main input rotates Flippy. Changing the phone’s orientation changes how it contacts ledges, debris, and other surfaces. A successful move is therefore less about pressing a direction at the right instant and more about controlling angle, torque, and momentum together.
The game does not use ordinary platformer assumptions. A surface that looks close may still be difficult if Flippy approaches it with the wrong face or too much spin. Small corrections can be more useful than dramatic rotations, especially near a narrow landing.
The vibration jump adds vertical movement
Flippy’s second movement is a vibration jump. It supplies the upward impulse needed to leave a surface or reach a higher object, while rotation determines how the phone travels and lands. The combination creates the game’s basic rhythm: set an angle, apply the jump, watch the trajectory, and correct the rotation before contact.

Official material does not publish a button-by-button keyboard map or a complete controller layout. Treat descriptions of rotation and vibration jump as the documented mechanics, not as a promise of a specific key or button. The live game configuration should be checked after release.
Expect a physics learning curve
Because movement is torque-based, identical-looking attempts can end differently when the starting angle, contact point, or momentum changes. Early practice should focus on observing how Flippy reacts to each surface. Deliberate, repeatable inputs are more useful than frantic corrections.

How progression is organized
Ten advertised areas
The store page advertises ten areas and a clear top-of-the-climb objective. It does not publish a level-by-level sequence, area names, completion times, or a collectible checklist. Those details should not be inferred from the area count.
NPC movement challenges
Non-player characters offer challenges that test movement skills. These are presented as optional activities rather than a documented mandatory order. The listing does not specify every challenge’s unlock condition, reward, or location, so players should expect to discover those details in the game.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Checkpoints and Chill Mode
Players who want less repetition can use optional checkpoints through Chill Mode. This assistance changes the cost of a fall without removing the physics-based movement challenge. The exact checkpoint rules and menu path are not documented in the reviewed official material; look for the mode or difficulty option in the current release build.
Speedrunning support
Quick restarts and built-in splits are listed for speedrunning. Quick restarts reduce downtime after a failed attempt, while splits let runners track sections of a climb. No official benchmark times or recommended route order are provided, so the feature set supports experimentation rather than prescribing a single route.
Cosmetic customization and phone mini-games
Flippy can be customized with cases, charms, and stickers. The phone also contains unlockable classic-style mini-games. These additions provide longer-term rewards and variety between climbs, but the listing does not state how each item or mini-game unlocks.

Solo versus online co-op
| Mode | What the official listing establishes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Solo | Play the climb and challenges on your own, with the full rotation-and-vibration movement system. | Learning physics, practicing precise routes, or pursuing personal speed goals. |
| Online co-op | Play online with other players; descriptions mention helping one another with beams and microwaves and using proximity chat. | Coordinating recoveries, experimenting with environmental interactions, and sharing difficult sections. |
| Chill Mode | Optional checkpoint assistance is advertised as part of the adjustable-difficulty options. | Players who want to reduce the amount of progress lost after a fall. |
Co-op is described as online rather than local split-screen. The beam and microwave examples indicate that multiplayer interaction involves more than simply racing to the top, but the official page does not provide a complete co-op objective list or networking requirements. Proximity chat is listed as a feature; use platform-level voice settings if you need to manage who can hear you.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDifficulty and accessibility options
Steam markets the climb as difficult, but it also lists tools that let players adjust the experience. These features are listing-level descriptions, not a guarantee that every option applies in every scene.
- Save anytime: supports stopping and resuming without relying solely on a fixed save point.
- Color alternatives: provides alternate color presentation for players who need stronger visual differentiation.
- Camera comfort: offers a setting intended to make camera movement easier to tolerate.
- Custom volume controls: lets players adjust audio levels to suit their setup.
- Stereo and surround sound: supports different audio output configurations.
- Play at your own pace: indicates that the game is designed to accommodate slower, less time-pressured progress.
- Play without quick-time events: removes a class of timed button prompts for players who prefer not to use them.
If a fall-heavy section becomes discouraging, try the less punishing mode before assuming the game is impossible. Players who need a particular accessibility behavior should verify it in the current build, because feature availability can change between development versions and release updates.
Controllers, keyboard, and supported platforms
The Steam listing reports full controller support and specifically names Xbox and PlayStation controllers. A controller is optional; no official source says that one is required, and no particular model is endorsed.
Keyboard mappings are not documented in the reviewed official material. If you plan to play on keyboard, confirm the in-game bindings and whether every movement action can be remapped. For a controller, check that the device is recognized by Steam before launching and test the rotation and vibration-jump inputs in a safe area.

The documented computer release is for Windows. Steam lists Steam Deck compatibility as unknown, so do not assume that the game will run correctly or have a verified control layout on Valve’s handheld until the store status changes.
Windows PC requirements
These specifications are the requirements listed by Steam for the Windows version. They are not independent performance benchmarks.

There is an important distinction between the game’s listed minimum operating system and the Steam client requirement. Steam states that its client requires Windows 10 or later as of January 1, 2024. In practice, a Windows 7-era game requirement does not mean the current Steam client will install or operate on Windows 7. Check the live store page and your client version before purchase.

Earlier 2026 demo updates
A June/July 2026 update announcement described a progress bar, the conclusion of a limited-time Candyland tournament, a Hall of Champions, localization work, two new in-phone mini-games, and demo achievements. These are dated update notes. The tournament and demo features should not be treated as permanent launch content unless the current release notes confirm them.
What is not yet documented?
The official pages support a feature-level FAQ, not a complete strategy guide. They do not establish:
- a level-by-level walkthrough or exact route through all ten areas;
- the order in which NPC challenges unlock;
- a full keyboard or controller button chart;
- the requirements for every case, charm, sticker, or mini-game;
- benchmark frame rates for specific graphics cards;
- Steam Deck compatibility or a verified handheld control scheme.
Do not rely on videos or forum posts that present guessed key bindings, unlock orders, or performance numbers as official facts. Those details may be useful player observations, but they are not established by the game’s published listing.
