For measuring how a flexible surface itself bends or twists, a conformal flexible or distributed shape sensor is usually the more direct choice. An IMU is generally better for tracking the motion and orientation of the object or body segment carrying it. If you need both local deformation and whole-segment movement, combining the two technologies can be more capable than choosing either alone.

There is no standardized head-to-head test proving one category universally better. The correct choice depends on whether your target is local curvature, a joint angle, a complete soft-surface shape, or the broader motion of a device or limb.

What each technology actually measures

Flexible bend sensors measure deformation at the mounting point

A bend sensor is attached across a joint, hinge-like component or flexible material. As that part curves, the sensor’s electrical or optical response changes, allowing software to estimate bend angle. This is a direct measurement of deformation where the sensor is installed, rather than an inferred estimate from inertial motion.

Commercial products are not all equivalent. Some measure one bending axis, while others measure two orthogonal axes. Elongation sensing may also be available. Nitto’s flexSensing range, for example, describes silicone-elastomer sensors intended to conform to moving parts and curved surfaces, with one-axis and two-axis bend options and elongation measurement: Nitto flexSensing.

Distributed shape sensors reconstruct a surface

A shape-sensing sheet uses multiple sensing elements distributed across an area. Instead of reporting only the angle at one hinge, it combines measurements to estimate how the whole sheet is curved, folded or twisted.

MIT’s 2026 experimental sheet embeds zig-zag optical fibers in silicone. Bending changes how much light travels through and emerges from each fiber. Making one side of a fiber rougher than the other creates a different optical response depending on bend direction. An algorithm combines those readings to reconstruct the sheet’s three-dimensional form. MIT News describes the prototype and its reconstruction method in “Shape-sensing sheet digitally tracks its movement as it bends and twists”.

IMUs measure inertial quantities, not surface bend

An inertial measurement unit measures physical quantities such as acceleration and angular rate. A gyroscope supplies angular-rate data, while an accelerometer measures linear acceleration, including the effect of gravity when the sensor is relatively still. Orientation, trajectory and pose are calculated by processing those readings, often with filtering and sensor-fusion algorithms.

Bosch positions its BMI270 as a low-power IMU combining accelerometer and angular-rate measurement with on-chip motion features for applications including wearables, hearables, smart clothing and augmented- or virtual-reality devices: Bosch BMI270. The component reports the movement of the package itself. A single IMU does not directly reveal how a soft surface between sensors is bending.

Which one is more direct for bending and twisting?

Tracking need More direct starting point Reason
Angle at a hinge, joint or flexible link One-axis or two-axis bend sensor The sensing element is mounted across the part that deforms and reports bend at that location.
Overall shape of a soft sheet that folds and twists Distributed shape-sensing design Multiple embedded elements provide spatial information needed for surface reconstruction.
Orientation and movement of a rigid or semi-rigid segment IMU Acceleration and angular-rate readings are well suited to estimating segment motion after processing.
Garment-based pose estimation involving both joint deformation and segment motion Sensor fusion Flex sensors can capture local joint changes while IMUs capture segment movement.

For a flexible surface, an IMU can tell you how the sensor package rotates and accelerates, but not necessarily how the material between two points curves. Reconstructing that shape with IMUs generally requires several sensors placed in a known arrangement plus a model that infers the intervening geometry.

Conversely, a bend sensor may accurately report a local angle without telling you the absolute orientation of the entire object in space. The technologies answer different questions, which is why “better” must be tied to the output you need.

What flexible sensors can deliver

Local bend and joint angle

For a hinge-like movement, mounting a bend sensor across the joint keeps the measurement close to the quantity of interest. Nitto reports measured bending-angle accuracy of ±1.0° and measured elongation accuracy of ±0.5 mm for its flexSensing products. The company labels these as measured values, not guaranteed specifications, so they should be treated as product-page results rather than universal performance limits.

Two-axis deformation

A one-axis element is appropriate when motion is constrained to one plane. If the part can bend in two perpendicular directions, a two-axis device can provide more useful information without requiring two separately mounted strips. Mechanical placement still matters: twisting, sliding, adhesive compliance and stretching can introduce errors if the sensor is not firmly coupled to the surface.

Sampling and integration

Nitto lists sampling rates from 1 to 200 Hz for the flexSensing products and describes low-power I2C integration. Evaluation kits include a BLE module and battery according to the product information. These figures describe the listed system and should not be assumed for every flexible sensor, readout circuit or wireless implementation.

Durability under repeated bending

The same product information reports more than one million 180-degree bending cycles. That is a measured endurance result under the manufacturer’s stated test conditions, not a guarantee for every mounting method, bend radius, temperature or production batch. A design that repeatedly folds at a sharp crease may fail much sooner than one that follows a controlled radius.

What the MIT shape-sensing sheet demonstrates

The MIT prototype is important because it addresses surface shape rather than only a single joint angle. Its optical fibers are embedded in a soft sheet, allowing the sheet to follow twists and folds while an external circuit board and reconstruction algorithm process the transmitted-light changes.

In tests against 3D-printed molds, MIT News reports reconstruction error of less than 0.4 centimeters. The article compares that result with approximately 1–2 centimeters for the existing rigid-sensor designs examined in the study. Those figures belong to that experimental sheet, test setup and comparison set; they are not a universal ranking of all flexible sensors against all IMUs.

The design is also not an off-the-shelf wearable. It requires fabrication of the silicone sheet, embedded optical fibers, external electronics and a trained reconstruction process. Qifan Yu, quoted by MIT News, says the work is “targeting fully soft and stretchable sensing surfaces,” which could be safer when interacting with people or other soft environments. The prototype points toward soft gloves, garments and robotic skins, but further engineering is required for production packaging, calibration, connectors and long-term field use.

Where IMUs are the stronger choice

Segment orientation and broad motion

An IMU is a natural fit when the question is “How did this object or body segment move?” Examples include head orientation, limb motion, sports activity, controller movement and the attitude of a mobile device. The sensor package does not need to span a joint, so it can be compact and mounted on a rigid enclosure or garment.

High-speed motion

Inertial systems can be useful when motion is fast and contact-free. However, the accelerometer and gyroscope ranges must match the application. If acceleration or angular rate exceeds the selected range, the signal clips and data are lost. A Vicon Blue Trident product page attributes this warning to Andrew Gray of the Cronulla Sharks: “Many movements made at high speed or involving the highest peak forces, such as changes of direction, sudden decelerations, landing and even sprinting, can lead to sensor clipping and loss of data.” This is a product-page testimonial, not an independent comparison, but it illustrates a practical IMU failure mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Orientation estimation requires processing

Gyroscope data are integrated over time, so small bias errors accumulate as drift. Accelerometers provide a gravity reference when dynamic acceleration is limited, but they cannot by themselves distinguish gravity from sustained linear acceleration. Filters and sensor-fusion methods are therefore needed for a stable orientation estimate. Magnetic sensors, when used, can add a heading reference but are vulnerable to magnetic interference.

Why one IMU cannot map a soft sheet

Placing one IMU on a flexible sheet gives the motion of that one package. It cannot identify every fold, local bend or twist elsewhere on the sheet. A distributed inertial approach can estimate more of the shape, but it adds sensors, wiring or synchronization, calibration and a model of how the material deforms.

A specialized colonoscope study illustrates the scale of that approach by using an array of 15 IMUs to reconstruct a curved instrument. That is a research configuration, not a simple single-sensor consumer solution. Its existence shows that inertial shape reconstruction is possible, while also showing why it is more involved than attaching one IMU to a flexible surface.

When combining flex sensors and IMUs makes sense

Fusion is useful when local deformation and global movement are both important. A flex sensor can measure an elbow’s changing angle while an IMU on the upper arm and another on the forearm estimate how those segments are oriented in space. The combination can reduce ambiguity that either sensor type has alone.

The 2025 CHI paper “FIP: Endowing Robust Motion Capture on Daily Garment by Fusing Flex and Inertial Sensors” describes a garment system using two elbow flex sensors and four IMUs. The authors report improvements over the IMU approaches evaluated in their study: 19.5% lower angular error, 26.4% lower elbow angular error and 30.1% lower positional error. These are results for that garment, sensor placement, algorithms and test protocol, not a universal percentage improvement for every fused system. The paper is available at arXiv:2502.15058.

A practical fusion architecture

  1. Measure local deformation. Mount a bend sensor across each joint or flexible link whose angle matters.
  2. Measure segment motion. Place IMUs on the relevant rigid or semi-rigid segments, documenting each sensor’s coordinate frame.
  3. Synchronize timestamps. Use a shared clock or reliable timestamp alignment so flex changes and inertial events correspond.
  4. Calibrate neutral posture. Record the sensor outputs in a known pose and define the zero angle and coordinate transforms.
  5. Filter each stream. Remove noise and handle missing samples before combining measurements.
  6. Apply a kinematic or learned model. Use joint constraints, body dimensions or a trained estimator to turn the measurements into pose.
  7. Validate against the intended task. Test ordinary movements, fast movements, clothing shifts and the full range of expected bending rather than relying on a single laboratory pose.

How to choose between real systems

1. Define the output before comparing specifications

  • Choose a bend sensor when the required output is a joint angle, hinge deflection or local curvature.
  • Choose a distributed shape sensor when you need the three-dimensional form of a soft sheet or skin.
  • Choose an IMU when you need orientation, acceleration or motion of the sensor-bearing object.
  • Choose fusion when both deformation and segment pose affect the result.

2. Check mechanical fit and sensor displacement

A flexible sensor must remain aligned with the part it measures. Adhesive creep, wrinkles, shear, stretching and movement relative to the skin can corrupt the angle estimate. An IMU is less sensitive to spanning a joint, but its orientation changes if the package shifts or rotates on a loose garment. Mounting design is therefore part of the measurement system, not an afterthought.

3. Compare axes, range and resolution

Confirm whether the sensor measures one axis, two axes or a reconstructed surface. Check the usable bend radius, maximum angle, elongation range and expected twist. For an IMU, check accelerometer and gyroscope ranges, noise, bias stability and output rate. Do not compare a manufacturer’s bend-angle accuracy with an IMU’s angular-rate noise as though they were the same metric.

4. Plan calibration and drift management

Flexible materials can show hysteresis and can change response with temperature, aging and repeated strain. IMUs require bias estimation and orientation filtering, with drift becoming more significant during long periods without an external reference. A test plan should include warm-up, repeated cycles, different users or mounting positions and the actual clothing or enclosure used in operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Account for power, wiring and communications

Flexible sensors may need an analog or digital readout board; Nitto describes low-power I2C and BLE evaluation options for its products. IMUs also require power and a processor for filtering and pose estimation. Wireless links add latency, packet loss and synchronization concerns. Select the complete electronics path, not just the sensing element.

6. Validate environmental and durability requirements

Check sweat, humidity, washability, temperature, abrasion, repeated flexing and connector strain for wearable systems. For robots, consider silicone compatibility, pinch points and cable routing. A laboratory result under controlled conditions does not establish performance after months of movement or cleaning.

7. Demand task-specific validation

Look for tests that resemble the real use case: the same garment, bend range, movement speed, surface material and required accuracy. Product numbers from different manufacturers are not a head-to-head benchmark unless the test conditions and metrics match.

Common failure modes and fixes

Flexible sensor readings are noisy or inconsistent

  • Inspect the mounting for sliding, wrinkles or partial detachment.
  • Use a strain-relief design at the connector so cable forces do not become measurement forces.
  • Recalibrate neutral position after fitting the sensor to a new user or surface.
  • Characterize hysteresis by recording both increasing and decreasing bend cycles.

The angle is correct at one posture but wrong elsewhere

  • Check whether the sensor is also stretching; compensate for elongation if necessary.
  • Fit a calibration curve across the full operating range rather than using a single linear coefficient.
  • Verify that the mechanical axis of the sensor matches the joint’s actual axis.

IMU orientation drifts

  • Estimate gyroscope bias during a stationary period.
  • Use accelerometer-based correction when the motion model permits it.
  • Add an external reference, such as a known pose or another sensing modality, for long-duration tracking.
  • Check for magnetic disturbance before relying on a magnetometer for heading.

IMU data clip during impacts or sprints

  • Select a higher accelerometer or gyroscope range if the resulting noise remains acceptable.
  • Inspect raw data for saturation rather than allowing the estimator to treat clipped samples as valid.
  • Increase the sample rate and verify that the processor and wireless link can keep up.

A shape reconstruction looks plausible but is inaccurate

  • Validate against known molds or reference geometry, not visual appearance alone.
  • Check fiber or sensor spacing; undersampling can miss local folds.
  • Recalibrate after changes in temperature, material stiffness or sensor placement.
  • Report reconstruction error for the actual surface and motion range being used.

Costs, prototypes and implementation effort

The evidence available here does not establish a universal price comparison. Nitto presents one-axis and two-axis sensors plus evaluation kits, with BLE and battery features described for those kits; availability and final pricing depend on the supplier and region. Bosch documents the BMI270 component, but that page does not verify a particular retail breakout board or complete development kit.

A bend-sensor prototype typically needs the sensing strip, attachment layer, readout electronics, calibration software and a mounting fixture. An IMU prototype needs the module, a processor, power, an orientation estimator and a mechanically stable mount. A distributed shape system adds many channels, synchronization, a reconstruction model and often custom fabrication. Fusion adds all of the above plus timestamp alignment and a pose model.

Decision checklist

  • Is the primary output a local angle, a surface shape or a segment pose?
  • Does the material deform between sensing points in ways that matter?
  • How many bend axes must be measured?
  • What bend range, twist range and movement speed are expected?
  • Can the sensor remain fixed relative to the measured structure?
  • Is drift acceptable over the tracking duration?
  • What sample rate and latency does the application require?
  • How will calibration be repeated after remounting, washing or servicing?
  • What environmental and durability tests represent real use?
  • Would combining local flex measurements with IMU orientation remove an important ambiguity?

Bottom line: choose by the question, not the sensor label

For a joint angle or hinge deflection, start with a flexible bend sensor. For the three-dimensional form of a soft sheet, use a distributed shape-sensing design such as the approach demonstrated by MIT, while recognizing that the prototype requires custom fabrication and processing. For the orientation and broad motion of a body segment or device, an IMU is usually the simpler and more direct starting point.

Neither category wins every bending-and-twisting problem. Flexible sensors measure deformation where they are attached; IMUs measure inertial motion and rely on computation for orientation. When an application needs both local bend and whole-body movement, a calibrated combination can provide the most complete result.
