Flexible lighting can be made by coating light-emitting layers onto a moving plastic sheet, much like printing a newspaper. In a 2012 demonstration, researchers produced thin, flexible light-emitting electrochemical cell (LEC) sheets using a solution-based roll-to-roll process under ambient conditions. The result was a research prototype—not a conventional LED strip, OLED display, or established consumer product.

What “on a roll” means in this lighting report

The phrase refers to roll-to-roll manufacturing: a flexible substrate moves through coating equipment while successive functional layers are deposited. Chemistry World reported the Umeå University and Technical University of Denmark work on 14 August 2012. The device was an LEC sheet, a type of light-emitting device distinct from both OLEDs and the flexible LED tape sold for practical lighting.

The report framed LECs as a possible alternative to OLEDs for large-area lighting. Its distinguishing manufacturing feature was solution processing in ambient conditions, addressing fabrication challenges associated with OLED materials that can react with oxygen and water. The article presents efficient, potentially low-cost large-scale manufacture as a possibility, not a demonstrated commercial outcome. Chemistry World’s 2012 report is the source for the device details and reported figures below.

How the flexible LEC sheet was built

  1. Start with flexible PET. The team used polyethylene terephthalate foil as the substrate, providing mechanical support for the thin device.
  2. Coat the cathode layer. A slot-die roll coater deposited a 14 nm layer of zinc oxide nanoparticles on indium tin oxide to form the cathode.
  3. Apply the light-emitting ink. The active solution contained an organic solvent, a yellow light-emitting polymer, and an electrolyte.
  4. Deposit the anode ink. An anode ink was coated over the active layer to complete the device structure.

The reported finished device was 150 µm thick overall, including a 1 µm active light-emitting layer. These are dimensions reported in the 2012 article, not independent performance measurements. The source does not give quantified brightness, efficiency, lifetime, production yield, or manufacturing cost.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Why roll-to-roll processing drew attention

Coating a continuous flexible web offers a route to making large areas without building each lighting element as a separate rigid unit. In the report, the important combination was a flexible substrate, solution-deposited layers, and processing under ambient conditions. Andreas Sandström of Umeå University described ease and cost of fabrication as a key goal, saying: “If you can make it using roll-to-roll, you’ve succeeded.”

That statement expresses the manufacturing ambition; it does not establish that the process achieved a particular cost or production scale. The article also quotes Sebastian Reineke of Dresden University of Technology describing the pairing of LEC technology and ambient-condition processing as a path toward low-cost lighting and customizable signage. Those were prospective applications, not evidence of products already on sale.

What the demonstration did—and did not—show

  • It did show: a flexible, thin LEC device made by roll-to-roll coating on PET, with solution-deposited layers processed in ambient conditions.
  • It did not establish: a consumer-ready light, a proven cost advantage, or commercial production of the specific sheet.
  • It proposed: possible uses such as wallpaper, packaging, clothing, signage, and e-paper. The report does not say these applications became commercial products.

As of 11 October 2026, the sources cited here do not establish whether this specific 2012 LEC process has since become commercially available. That status should therefore be treated as unresolved rather than assumed either way.

How this differs from flexible LED tape today

Flexible LED tape is a separate, current product category. For example, LEDYi describes its COB strips as LED chips encapsulated on a flexible printed circuit board, producing continuous or “dotless” light; its listed applications include architectural, furniture, cabinet, and retail lighting. It also describes tunable-white, RGB, RGBW, and waterproof variants. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent comparative tests. LEDYi’s COB strip technical page discusses product types and installation considerations. Tresco Lighting’s press-release index lists tape-light launches in 2025 and 2026, further illustrating that tape lighting is a present-day category, distinct from the reported LEC research.

If you are choosing LED tape for an installation, check the specific model’s voltage and power needs, light output and color quality, whether it is fixed-color, tunable, or color-changing, and whether its protection rating suits the location. Also verify strip width, marked cut intervals, controller and driver compatibility, and mounting requirements. LEDYi notes that its strips can be cut only at marked intervals and that an aluminum profile can help with heat dissipation; confirm the details for the exact strip you intend to use. None of these consumer-product considerations demonstrates that the 2012 LEC sheet is available for purchase.
