For most shared living rooms, a flat-screen TV is the better practical choice: people sitting across a sofa are more likely to get a consistent view. A curved TV is worth considering if you usually watch from a centered, relatively close seat and prefer its wraparound look. Curvature alone does not guarantee a sharper picture, better contrast, or wider useful viewing angles; the specific TV and your room matter more.
What changes when a TV screen is curved?
A flat screen keeps the display surface in one plane. A curved screen bends the edges toward the viewer, changing how the screen appears from different seats. That change can affect perceived immersion, the apparent size of the image, reflections, and how evenly the display looks to people seated off-center. It does not, by itself, determine resolution or overall picture quality.
In a 2025 comparison of similar Samsung models, RTINGS calculated that at an assumed viewing distance of eight feet, a 55-inch flat TV covered a 28-degree field of view, versus 28.42 degrees for the curved TV. It described the curved screen as appearing about as large as a 55.8-inch flat screen in that setup. These figures apply to that comparison and distance, not to every curved TV or every viewer. Which screen is better for your seating arrangement?
Choose flat for a sofa or flexible seating
If several people watch from different positions, a flat screen is usually the safer choice. With a curved display, the center seat may feel more enveloping, while viewers toward the sides can see the screen at less favorable angles. RTINGS recommends a flat screen for multi-person viewing.

Consider curved for one centered viewer
If you sit near the center and relatively close to the TV, you may prefer how the curved edges seem to wrap toward you. That is a preference, not a guarantee that the image will look better. Check the particular model’s viewing-angle performance: RTINGS notes that panel type can affect viewing angles more than screen curvature, and its two example VA-panel TVs had similar limitations.
Do curved TVs improve picture quality or reduce reflections?
Not as a general rule. Curvature does not inherently improve contrast, resolution, or viewing angles. Those qualities depend on the specific TV, including its panel and image processing. Compare the models you are considering rather than treating the screen shape as a picture-quality specification.

Reflections can also look different rather than simply disappear. RTINGS describes reflections on a curved screen as stretched across more of the display; whether that is preferable depends on the viewer and the room. How should you choose a screen size and viewing distance?
Choose a size for your room and normal seating distance before paying extra attention to screen shape. LG USA offers 40 degrees as a cinema-style field-of-view reference and suggests estimating screen size by dividing viewing distance in inches by 1.2. This is LG’s sizing guidance, not a requirement or a rule that favors curved TVs. LG USA’s TV-size guide
For example, with a 96-inch viewing distance, that formula gives an estimated diagonal of 80 inches (96 ÷ 1.2). Treat the result as a starting point: room layout, personal comfort, and the space available for the TV also matter.

What else should you check before buying?
- Seating: Count the usual viewers and consider how far the side seats are from the center.
- Viewing distance: Compare screen sizes for your main seat instead of choosing curvature as a shortcut to immersion.
- Panel and viewing angles: Check the exact model’s performance, especially if people watch from the sides.
- Room lighting: Look at the TV’s reflection handling and the placement of windows and lamps.
- Placement and mounting: Confirm the exact model’s stand and wall-mount specifications. RTINGS notes that some curved models are bulkier at the rear and can be trickier to mount.
- Local availability and price: Check current listings in your region; the cited sources do not establish a general current price premium for curved TVs.
Does research show that curved TVs are always more immersive?
No universal conclusion follows from the study design alone. A published study examined four curvature conditions—2300R, 4000R, 6000R, and flat—at two viewing distances, 2.3 meters and 4 meters, and five lateral seating positions. It considered measures including spatial presence, engagement, comfort, and satisfaction. For a shared living room, a flat TV is the practical default. Consider a curved model if your main seat is centered and relatively close, you like the curved presentation, and the exact model suits your viewing angles, room lighting, and mounting setup. In either case, choose the model and size based on your room and the way you actually watch.
