A flashlight’s strobe mode flashes repeatedly rather than projecting a steady beam. It can help signal someone, mark a location, attract attention, or warn others. Some manufacturers also describe fast strobing as a way to disorient a potential attacker, but that is a stated intended use—not proof that it reliably stops an attack.
What does a flashlight’s strobe mode do?
Strobe interrupts the flashlight’s beam in a repeating flash pattern. The rate and controls vary by device. For example, the Garmin GPSMAP 66i offers settings from 1 through 9 strobes per second; that range describes this model, not a standard rate for all flashlights. When might you use strobe?
- To signal or attract attention: Repeated flashes may be easier to notice than a steady beam, which can be useful when trying to get someone’s attention or help someone locate you.
- To mark a location: A flashing light can make a spot easier to identify again, such as a place in the woods.
- As a warning or tactical feature: Some manufacturers describe fast strobe as intended to disorient a potential attacker. This is a manufacturer-stated purpose; the cited product information does not establish how reliably it works in an encounter.
Browning describes its flashlight strobe as useful for signaling, marking a place to return to, or helping someone find you. Pelican describes the strobe on its 2360 flashlight as intended for tactical or signaling purposes. Browning flashlight FAQ; Pelican 2360 Flashlight.

No. A generic strobe repeats flashes; an SOS mode uses a specific emergency signal pattern. The Garmin GPSMAP 66i manual labels SOS as an “Emergency strobe,” distinguishing it from the device’s numbered flash-rate settings. A distress pattern can make your signal more recognizable, but it does not necessarily summon help: Garmin says the D2 Mach 2’s programmed distress pattern will not contact assistance contacts or emergency services on your behalf. What should you know about battery use?
Using a flashlight, including its strobe, can reduce battery life. The impact depends on the device and setting, so there is no universal runtime penalty. Garmin says that on the GPSMAP 66i, lowering brightness or flash frequency can extend battery life; its D2 Mach 2 manual notes that a slow blink can have less battery impact than other strobe settings. Yes. Flashing lights may trigger photosensitive seizures in some people. Garmin advises people with epilepsy or sensitivity to bright or flashing lights to consult a physician, and Energizer warns that flashing lights may also affect people without a known seizure history.
