A flash memory disk is a storage device that saves data in flash memory, a type of semiconductor memory that retains information when power is off. The phrase most often means a USB flash drive, but it can also describe a memory card or a solid-state drive (SSD). Flash describes the storage technology—not necessarily a spinning disk.
What does “flash memory disk” mean?
Flash memory is nonvolatile: unlike volatile memory such as DRAM, it keeps stored data when a device loses power. A flash memory disk is a product that packages this memory as storage. In everyday use, people often mean a USB flash drive, though memory cards and SSDs also use flash memory.
Samsung defines flash memory as a semiconductor that preserves data even when power is off. Samsung Semiconductor’s glossary explains the term.
Is a flash memory disk the same as a hard disk?
No. Despite the word “disk,” an SSD stores data in semiconductor memory and does not need a mechanical disk mechanism. A traditional hard disk drive stores data on rotating magnetic platters. “Flash memory disk” may be used loosely for flash-based storage, but it does not mean the device contains a spinning disk.

For a computer’s internal storage, SSD is the clearer product name. For a small removable device that plugs into a USB port, USB flash drive is the usual name.
What types of flash memory are used?
NAND and NOR
NAND and NOR are different flash-memory architectures. NAND is widely used for mass storage, including USB flash drives, memory cards, and SSDs. NOR is suited to random-access code and firmware use. Microchip explains that NAND data is read in pages, while NOR supports random-access reading and can be used to execute program code directly from memory. The architecture affects the kind of task the memory suits; the word “flash” alone does not tell you a product’s performance.

These labels describe how many bits a NAND cell represents: SLC stores one bit, MLC stores two, and TLC stores three. Cell type is one factor in a product’s capacity and characteristics, but the label alone does not establish a particular drive’s speed, durability, or warranty. Those details depend on the specific product.

What devices use flash memory?

How should you interpret the term when choosing storage?
Start with the device you need to use: check whether it accepts a USB drive or memory card, or whether you need an SSD for a computer. Then compare the specific products’ capacity, interface, stated performance, and endurance or warranty information. The category name “flash memory disk” does not specify any of those model-level details.
