A flash memory device uses nonvolatile semiconductor memory: it can be electrically written and erased, and it retains stored data when power is removed. The phrase can mean the memory chip itself or, more loosely, a finished product—such as a USB drive or SSD—that contains flash memory.
What is flash memory?
Flash memory is rewritable, nonvolatile semiconductor memory. “Nonvolatile” means that it preserves information when power is off; “rewritable” means it can be electrically programmed and erased. In everyday use, “flash memory device” may refer to either the flash-memory component or a complete storage product built with flash. The distinction matters: flash is the storage technology; a USB flash drive, memory card, or solid-state drive (SSD) is a product that uses it.
How does a flash memory device work?
At a high level, a flash device stores information in semiconductor memory that can be electrically programmed and erased. Because the stored information is nonvolatile, it remains available after the device loses power. The details of reading and writing depend on the flash architecture and the particular chip or product; the term alone does not tell you a device’s speed, capacity, or endurance.

What is the difference between NAND and NOR flash?
NAND and NOR are two flash-memory architectures, suited to different access patterns and uses. The contrast below describes common roles, not a guarantee that every chip of one type will outperform every chip of the other.

Is an SSD a flash memory device?
An SSD is a complete solid-state storage device, not another name for a flash-memory chip. NAND flash is commonly used as storage inside SSDs, alongside the other components that make the product operate. NIST defines an SSD as a storage device using solid-state memory. The same distinction applies to a memory card or USB flash drive: each is a finished storage product that uses flash memory. In contrast, “system flash” can mean flash storage built into a computer system for firmware. What the term does—and does not—tell you
- It tells you: the storage is based on rewritable, nonvolatile semiconductor memory.
- It may tell you: whether someone means a memory chip or a finished product containing flash; check the context.
- It does not establish: a particular speed, capacity, retention time, or endurance. Those depend on the specific memory part, interface, and product.
