Short answer: columns.schema is required when columns.mappingMode is defineBelow means the n8n Google Sheets node is set to explicit column mapping (defineBelow), but its column schema is empty or missing. Either switch to autoMapInputData when your incoming field names already match the sheet headers, or keep defineBelow and add the required column mappings.
The exact wording comes from a third-party troubleshooting report published September 4, 2026. That report does not identify the n8n release, so treat the behavior as version-sensitive and confirm the result in your own node execution details and destination sheet.
Translate the error into plain English
An n8n Google Sheets node has to decide how each incoming item becomes a spreadsheet row. The setting named columns.mappingMode selects that strategy. When its value is defineBelow, the node expects you to describe the columns explicitly in columns.schema.
The validation message is therefore not saying that Google Sheets itself is missing a column. It is saying that the workflow configuration asks for a manually defined mapping but supplies no mapping definition. An empty schema and an absent schema produce the same practical problem: n8n cannot determine which input value belongs in which destination column.

A September 4, 2026 troubleshooting account reports this exact pairing and says the node rejected the configuration during execution. The account is not official n8n documentation and does not name a version, so use it as a description of the reported behavior rather than a guarantee that every release displays the same validation path. Read the reported error account.
When each mapping mode is appropriate
The useful decision is whether the incoming item keys already have the same names as the first-row headers in the destination sheet.
| Decision point | autoMapInputData |
defineBelow |
|---|---|---|
| Incoming names and sheet headers | Use when they already match. | Use when fields must be renamed or reordered. |
| Schema in the reported configuration | The report says an explicit schema array is not needed. | The report says a populated schema is required. |
| Typical purpose | Direct name-based mapping. | Explicit control over destination columns. |
For example, if an upstream item contains keys named email, status, and createdAt, and the sheet headers use those exact names, automatic mapping is the simpler choice. If the sheet instead uses Customer email, State, and Created date, or if the order must be controlled independently of the incoming object, explicit mapping is the better fit.
These mode descriptions reflect the cited account and have not been verified against a specific n8n release. Your installed node may present the controls differently or apply additional validation.
Fix the configuration in the Google Sheets node
1. Open the node that reports the failure
Open the workflow containing the Google Sheets operation and select the affected node. Do not rely only on the workflow canvas status. The reported account found the literal message in the node’s execution details, where the failing operation and validation text were visible.

2. Inspect the mapping mode and schema together
In the node editor, locate the columns mapping controls. Confirm whether the mode is defineBelow. Then inspect the schema or column-mapping area immediately below it. If defineBelow is selected and that area contains no entries, the configuration matches the condition described by the error.
Also check that you are editing the node that actually ran. Workflows can contain several Google Sheets nodes, and changing a different one will not alter the failing execution.

3. Compare input keys with the sheet headers
Inspect one representative item arriving from the previous node and write down its field names. Separately, inspect the header row in the target sheet. Compare spelling, capitalization, spaces, punctuation, and suffixes. A value can be present while its key still fails a name-based match because customer_id and Customer ID are different names.
This comparison determines the repair:
- If the names already match, choose
autoMapInputDataand remove the need for a manually populated schema. - If names differ, or the output must follow a deliberate order, retain
defineBelowand create an entry for every destination column you intend to write.
4. Use automatic mapping when names are already aligned
Change the mapping mode to autoMapInputData in the Google Sheets node. The cited report describes this mode as mapping incoming fields by name and not requiring the explicit schema array. Save the node, execute the workflow again, and inspect the resulting execution details.
Automatic mapping is not a renaming tool. If the sheet header is different from the incoming key, changing modes alone will not express that translation. Rename the field upstream, change the sheet header, or use explicit mapping instead.

5. Populate an explicit schema when names or order differ
Keep defineBelow selected when the workflow needs controlled placement. In the node’s schema editor, add the destination columns and associate each one with the corresponding incoming value using the controls provided by your n8n version. Make sure the schema is actually populated; opening the editor without adding entries leaves the same validation condition in place.

Decide what should happen to fields that are not listed: they may be ignored, remain blank, or require a separate mapping depending on the node version. Because the cited report does not specify a release, check the behavior in your execution output instead of treating an omitted field as universally handled.
Confirm that the retry really wrote a row
A successful-looking canvas is not sufficient evidence that the spreadsheet changed. The reported account describes a case in which no new row appeared even though the canvas initially appeared successful. That is an anecdote, not a universal n8n symptom, but it is a useful verification habit.
- Run the workflow or execute the Google Sheets node with a known test item.
- Open the execution detail for that run and confirm that the node completed without the schema validation message.
- Open the exact spreadsheet and worksheet selected by the node.
- Check for the expected new row and verify several values, not just the row count.
- If no row was added, return to the execution detail and inspect the operation, selected document, worksheet, and input data before changing unrelated settings.
Checking both places separates a configuration fix from a destination or selection problem. The execution detail tells you what n8n attempted; the sheet confirms what was actually persisted.
Common causes that look similar
The mode was changed but the old configuration was not saved
After selecting a different mapping mode, save the node or workflow as required by your editor, then execute again. A stale execution can continue to show the previous configuration, so use a fresh run when evaluating the change.

The schema editor contains an empty row
An empty row is not the same as a usable mapping. Remove blank entries or complete them with a destination column and its intended source value. The error specifically concerns a missing or empty schema, so visually opening the section does not satisfy the requirement.
Input keys were transformed upstream
A Set, Code, or other transformation node can rename fields before they reach Google Sheets. Compare the data immediately before the Sheets node, not an earlier sample from the workflow. If a field was renamed, either align the sheet header with the new key or express the translation in defineBelow.
The wrong worksheet or spreadsheet is being inspected
When the execution completes but the expected row is not visible, verify the document and worksheet selected in the node. A correct mapping can still write to a different tab than the one you opened. The cited account reports no row after a failed attempt, but it does not establish that every missing-row symptom has the same cause.
A release changed validation or editor behavior
The troubleshooting account refers to a “current” version and contrasts it with older behavior without giving a release number. Do not assume that a workflow accepted by an older installation will be accepted unchanged after an upgrade. Record your n8n version when reporting the issue, and compare the exact node settings in the affected environment.

n8n’s official data-mapping documentation explains the general idea of referencing data from previous nodes and distinguishes mapping from transforming data. It does not specifically document this Google Sheets validation string or confirm the error-specific remedy described above. See n8n’s data-mapping UI documentation.
That distinction matters when troubleshooting. The general documentation can help you understand where an incoming value originates, but the Google Sheets node’s mapping-mode validation is a node-specific behavior. Use the execution detail and the controls visible in your installed version as the authoritative evidence for your workflow.
A practical decision checklist
- Locate the Google Sheets node named in the failing execution.
- Read the literal validation message:
columns.schema is required when columns.mappingMode is defineBelow. - Confirm whether
columns.mappingModeis set todefineBelow. - Check whether the schema contains real column mappings rather than blank entries.
- Compare the incoming item keys with the destination sheet headers.
- Choose
autoMapInputDatafor matching names. - Choose
defineBelowand populate the schema for renaming or reordering. - Execute a fresh test and read the node execution details.
- Open the destination worksheet and verify the expected row and values.
- Record the n8n version if the behavior differs from these steps.
Bottom line for this specific error
The message identifies a configuration mismatch, not a mysterious spreadsheet failure: explicit mapping is enabled, but its schema is empty. Align the input names and sheet headers and use autoMapInputData, or deliberately define every required column under defineBelow. Because the available report is from one third-party account and omits the n8n release, validate the repair with a fresh execution and a direct check of the target sheet.
