The message “The initial setup system is disabled” means TShock has already disabled its one-time setup authenticator. In most installations, either setup was completed previously or TShock still sees its setup lock and database. If an administrator account exists, restore access with the console command /user group <username> owner (or, only for controlled recovery, superadmin). If no usable administrator account remains, stop the server, back up the TShock files, remove setup.lock and the SQLite database that actually exists, then restart and run the first-time setup again.
What the message means
TShock’s /setup command is not a general-purpose login command. Its source describes it as being “Used to authenticate as superadmin when first setting up TShock.” It is intended for the initial authentication step, not for repeatedly promoting players after setup has been completed.

When TShock reports that the initial setup system is disabled, it is telling you that this one-time mechanism is no longer active. A completed setup normally leaves a setup lock and a user database behind. Trying /setup again therefore produces the disabled message instead of a new setup code.
The error does not, by itself, prove that your administrator account was deleted. It commonly means one of three things:
#1 Best Overall
- In Terraria, every world is unique-from the floating islands in the sky to the deepest level of The Underworld. Adventure to the ends of the earth, and defeat villainous bosses along the way. The world is your canvas!
- Setup was completed earlier and an owner or superadmin account already exists.
- The server was moved, restored, or reconfigured, so you are looking at a different database or configuration directory than expected.
- The setup lock or database is damaged, misplaced, or left over from an old installation, while no usable administrator account remains.
Use the least destructive recovery that matches your situation. Reassigning a group preserves the existing database. Deleting the setup lock and database starts authentication over and can erase the TShock user and permission data stored in that database.
Choose the recovery path
| Situation | Best first action | What you need | Data impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| An administrator account exists, but your player has no privileges | Run /user group <username> owner from the server console or an authenticated administrator context |
Console access or an account with permission to use /user |
Preserves the database |
| You need full privileges temporarily and can authenticate as an existing administrator | Use a controlled group change to superadmin, then reduce privileges after recovery |
Console or authenticated admin access | Preserves the database |
| No usable administrator account remains, and you can edit the server files | Stop the server, back up the data, remove setup.lock and the actual SQLite database, then restart |
File-manager or filesystem access and a complete backup | Resets TShock account and permission data in the removed database |
| You do not know where TShock stores its files | Check the launch directory and any -configpath argument before deleting anything |
Startup command, hosting-panel settings, or provider file manager | No impact until files are changed |
Do not delete files merely because /setup is disabled. First check whether an owner account can be restored with a group command. File deletion is the fallback for a genuinely inaccessible installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

File-level recovery is safe only when the server is fully stopped. A running Terraria server can keep the SQLite file open or write new data while you are copying or deleting it, leaving a partial backup or a newly recreated file.
- Announce the maintenance window to players and save normally if the server is still responsive.
- Stop the Terraria/TShock process completely. Confirm that the process is no longer running in the hosting panel, service manager, or terminal.
- Record the server launch command and arguments, especially any
-configpathoption. That option changes where TShock resolves configuration, logs, and its SQLite database. - Make a copy of the entire TShock data/configuration directory. Keep the copy outside the live directory and label it with the date.
- If the host supplies snapshots or file-manager backups, create one before deleting a lock or database.
If you only have in-game access and no console or filesystem access, ask the server owner or hosting provider to perform these steps. Do not ask a random player to run a superadmin command on your behalf.
Recovery path A: reset the one-time setup files
Use this path only when no usable administrator account remains. It causes TShock to initialize its authentication data again, so treat the existing database as valuable and keep the backup until you have confirmed that the new setup works.
1. Locate the active TShock directory
On a self-hosted server, start with the directory from which the server executable is launched. Then inspect the startup script, service definition, or command line for -configpath. If present, use the directory supplied by that option rather than assuming the executable’s folder is active.

The active directory normally contains TShock configuration files, logs, a setup lock, and a SQLite database. If you find more than one candidate directory, compare modification times and the current launch configuration. Deleting files in an unused copy will not change the server, while deleting files in the wrong live directory can damage an unrelated instance.
2. Back up before deletion
Copy the complete directory, not just the database. The backup should include the lock file, configuration files, logs, and any other TShock data. Preserve the original filenames and directory structure. If the host offers a downloadable archive, download it before continuing so the backup is not lost if the account is later restarted or migrated.
3. Delete the setup lock
With the server stopped, remove the file named setup.lock from the active TShock directory. This lock tells TShock that the one-time setup process has already been completed. If the file is not present, do not create a replacement or delete unrelated files; continue by verifying the configured path and database location.
4. Identify the real SQLite database filename
The official TShock configuration source uses SQLite as the default storage type and names the default database path tshock.sqlite. A hosting article updated on 2024-07-05 refers to a file named tshock.sqllite, which appears to be a spelling error or a provider-specific filename. Because both names may be encountered in instructions, inspect the directory and use the database file that actually exists.
Do not blindly type tshock.sqllite or tshock.sqlite into a deletion command. Check the file list, verify that it belongs to the active instance, and make sure your backup contains it. If the installation uses a different storage type or a custom path, deleting a guessed SQLite filename will not reset the account system.
5. Remove only the active database
Delete the existing TShock SQLite database after verifying the backup. This database contains TShock’s account, group, and permission state. Removing it is the destructive part of the reset: players, groups, and other data stored there may need to be recreated. Leave unrelated Terraria world files and configuration files alone.
6. Restart and complete setup
Start the server normally. TShock should create a fresh database and expose its first-time setup process. Watch the server console for the setup code or instruction it prints. From the player account you intend to administer, run:

- Item Package Weight:0.1 kg
- Country Of Origin: China
/setup <code>
Replace <code> with the exact numbers or code displayed by TShock. Do not include the angle brackets. The command authenticates that player for the initial setup and grants the initial high-level access needed to configure groups.
After authentication, create or assign the everyday administrative group you actually need. Confirm the command result in the console and test a harmless administrative command before inviting players back.
Recovery path B: restore an existing account with group commands
If the database still contains your account, do not reset it. Use the server console, or an already authenticated administrator context, to assign a group to the correct username.
Routine administration: owner
For normal administration, use:
/user group <username> owner
Replace <username> with the account’s exact TShock username. The owner group is the appropriate permanent destination for a server operator who needs broad day-to-day control without treating every recovery as a superadmin emergency.
Controlled recovery: superadmin
If full permissions are required to recover a locked installation, the console command documented in a Pryaxis TShock discussion is:
/user group <username> superadmin
This is a recovery shortcut, not a recommendation to leave all players in the superadmin group. TShock’s permission documentation marks tshock.superadmin.user as intended for superadmins and associates it with the /user command. Use the command only for the account you control, verify access, and then move routine operators to a less powerful group when practical.
First-time setup code
If TShock is presenting a new setup code after a reset, authenticate with:
Rank #4
- 14 Different environments (including dungeons, floating islands, jungles) that go to the extremities of the earth, up in the sky and all the way down to the very deepest depths of the world.
- Hundreds of weapons, armour and other items to craft, with character advancement.
- Explore to find different materials and make exotic potions, laser guns, magic wands, flamethrower, diving gear, speed boots, grappling hooks, chainsaws, magic mirrors, etc.
- 29 Different block types to build whatever you imagine!
- NPCs and a swarm of enemies (over 150 types) including goblins, wyverns, unicorns, and-GASP-clowns!
/setup <code>
A Pryaxis discussion dated 2021-11-07 notes that the older auth wording was renamed to setup and recommends using /setup followed by the displayed numbers. If the server does not display a code, stop and verify that you restarted the intended instance after removing the correct lock and database.

How to run the command safely
From the server console
Console commands are generally entered without a leading chat slash on some hosts and with a slash on others. TShock’s documented command form includes the slash, so follow the convention shown by your provider’s console. If the console rejects the slash, retry the same command without it; do not alter the username or group name.
- Confirm the console is attached to the intended server instance.
- Enter
/user group <username> ownerfor routine administration, or the controlledsuperadminform during recovery. - Read the response for an unknown user, unknown group, or permission error.
- Have the target player disconnect and reconnect if the permission change is not visible immediately.
From an authenticated administrator account
An already privileged player can run the group command in-game if that account has permission to use /user. Type the exact username as TShock knows it; display names, capitalization, and authentication identity may not be interchangeable. If the command says you lack permission, use the server console or sign in with the account that owns the required permission.
Using temporary elevation instead of permanent superadmin
TShock documents tshock.su as allowing a user to elevate to superadmin for 10 minutes. Temporary elevation is useful when you need to perform one recovery task and want the privilege to expire automatically. It is safer than leaving a broadly used account in the superadmin group, but it still grants powerful access during that window.
Use temporary elevation only from a trusted, authenticated account and keep the console or chat history private. When the task is complete, verify that the account’s normal group is appropriate and that no shared account remains elevated.

Troubleshooting branches
The command says the user does not exist
You may be connected to a new or different database, or the username may not match the account’s TShock identity. Check the active -configpath, confirm the server instance, and inspect the backup before resetting anything. If the account truly is absent, follow the file-reset path and authenticate with the new setup code.
The command says you lack permission
The account issuing /user group is not in a group with the required permission. Use the server console, ask the existing owner to run the command, or perform the controlled reset only when no administrator remains. Do not repeatedly try /setup; the disabled message will not change until setup state or account permissions change.

You cannot find setup.lock
Check the directory selected by -configpath and make sure the server is stopped. Some file managers hide files or show only a partial directory. If the lock is genuinely absent, do not delete random files. Verify the storage configuration and database location, then use the existing account path if possible.
You deleted a file but nothing changed
You probably edited an inactive copy, the server restarted with a different -configpath, or the database filename was not the one TShock uses. Compare the launch command with the directory you edited, stop every duplicate instance, and inspect the file timestamps after a controlled restart.

Use the filename present in the active directory. The official default is tshock.sqlite; the alternative spelling appears in a hosting guide updated 2024-07-05. Treat the latter as a possible typo or provider-specific name, not as a universal TShock filename.
The setup code still does not work
Make sure you copied the current code from the current server console, not an old log or a different instance. Enter it with /setup, preserve the digits exactly, and confirm that the player account is connected to that same server. If setup was not actually reset, the command will continue to be disabled.
The server will not start after the reset
Restore the backed-up directory and start the server again. A failed start can result from deleting the wrong file, changing permissions, leaving a partial database, or editing configuration while the process was still running. Once the original instance is stable, take a fresh backup and repeat only after confirming the active path and filenames.
Verify the recovery
- Log in with the intended administrative account.
- Run a non-destructive command that the assigned group should allow.
- Confirm that ordinary players do not have owner or superadmin membership unless deliberately assigned.
- Check that the server is using the expected configuration directory and database after restart.
- Keep the pre-reset backup until accounts, groups, and permissions have been recreated and tested.
If you used superadmin only to recover access, change the account to owner or another least-privilege group when the administrative work is complete. If you used temporary elevation, wait for the 10-minute elevation period to expire and verify the account’s normal permissions.

- Document the live launch command, including any

- Back up the TShock directory and SQLite database while the server is stopped.
- Keep a private note of the provider’s console and file-manager procedure.
- Use owner or role-specific groups for routine work and reserve superadmin for controlled recovery.
- Do not delete setup or database files during an upgrade until you have a verified backup.
What to remember
“The initial setup system is disabled” is normally a state message, not a server failure. If an account exists, assign that account an appropriate group with /user group. If no administrator remains, stop the server, back up the active TShock directory, remove setup.lock and the SQLite database that is actually present, restart, and authenticate with the newly displayed /setup <code>. Always verify the active -configpath, treat the tshock.sqlite/tshock.sqllite spelling difference carefully, and keep superadmin privileges limited to genuine recovery work.
