Write failed: Connection reset by peer means your SSH client was writing to a connection that had already been forcibly closed. It is an observation, not a diagnosis: the reset may have come from sshd, a firewall or NAT device, a VPN, a load balancer, or a broken network path. The fastest fix is to identify when the reset occurs, then match the client’s last debug line with server and network evidence.
Run ssh -vvv user@host, record the final 30–50 lines, and check the server at that exact timestamp before changing keepalive values or restarting services.
What the message actually tells you
SSH runs over a TCP connection. While the local process is sending encrypted data, the operating system reports that the peer has reset or aborted the socket. OpenSSH then prints Write failed: Connection reset by peer. The OpenSSH detection rules describe this condition as “Connection reset or aborted,” while SSH manuals describe a fatal write failure as the remote host forcibly disconnecting.
The wording does not identify who sent the reset. A remote sshd can exit, reject a connection under policy, or be killed by the operating system. A middlebox can expire or block the flow. A VPN, NAT mapping, route, or interface can disappear. An unanswered keepalive sequence can also lead the sender to conclude that the peer is unreachable and close the connection. Treat the line as the starting point for diagnosis, not proof that the server intentionally rejected your account.

Reset versus timeout: use the distinction correctly
| Client symptom | What happened at the transport layer | Most useful next check |
|---|---|---|
Connection reset by peer or Write failed |
An existing socket was reset or aborted while the client was writing. | Find the failure phase, then correlate client output with sshd logs and the source of any TCP RST. |
Connection timed out |
No usable response arrived before the connection attempt or operation timed out. | Check routing, address selection, firewall rules, listening state, and whether the host is reachable at all. |
Broken pipe |
The local process wrote to a socket whose other end had already gone away. | Investigate the same liveness, daemon, and middlebox causes as a reset, using timestamps to determine which side disappeared first. |
A reset during setup is materially different from one after an eight-hour session. Do not apply an idle-session remedy to a daemon that crashes during key exchange, and do not debug package defects when only one NAT path drops long-idle flows.
Classify the failure before changing settings
| When it resets | Likely classes of cause | Evidence to seek |
|---|---|---|
| Before authentication or during key exchange | sshd crash, malformed or incompatible configuration, authentication policy, security tooling, resource exhaustion, or unauthenticated-connection limits. |
Client’s last -vvv line, sshd preauth/fatal messages, service restarts, kernel OOM or segfault records, and package-change history. |
| Immediately after login | Shell or session startup failure, forced administrative termination, account policy, port-forwarding restrictions, or a path device that rejects the newly established flow. | Authentication and session logs, shell startup diagnostics, account restrictions, and packet traces if policy evidence is absent. |
| After long idle periods | NAT, firewall, VPN, load-balancer idle expiry, wireless changes, route changes, or failed liveness probes. | Idle-flow timers, VPN and firewall events, reconnect behavior from another network, and keepalive responses. |
| Only one client or address family | Client configuration, local endpoint security, IPv6/IPv4 path differences, or a single network segment. | Compare another client, run ssh -4 and ssh -6, and inspect local verbose output. |
| Many clients at once | Server resource pressure, connection-flood controls, firewall rate limits, or a shared upstream device. | Concurrent pre-authentication counts, MaxStartups, rate-limit logs, CPU/memory graphs, and RST sources. |
Evidence-first troubleshooting procedure
1. Capture the exact client phase
- Run
ssh -vvv user@host. Add the same options you normally use, such as-p,-i, or a proxy command, so the reproduction is representative. - Save the final 30–50 lines and note the timestamp. Identify whether the last successful messages mention TCP connection, key exchange, host-key verification, authentication, channel opening, or an established session.
- Repeat once if safe. A deterministic reset at the same protocol line points toward a server or policy defect; a failure that moves around points more strongly toward resource pressure or the path.
OpenSSH developers recommend collecting client debug output together with server-side output. A single client line cannot establish which machine sent the reset.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
2. Correlate server logs at that timestamp
On a systemd host, try journalctl -u sshd; some distributions name the unit ssh, so use journalctl -u ssh when the first command has no entries. Traditional systems commonly write to /var/log/auth.log or /var/log/secure. Filter around the recorded second, not just the current tail.

- Daemon evidence:
fatal, preauth, abrupt restart, configuration-parse errors, or a clean administrative stop. - Resource evidence: OOM-killer messages, memory pressure, file-descriptor exhaustion, CPU starvation, or process limits.
- Policy evidence: authentication-limit, access-control, security-module, or firewall-denial messages.
- Absence of server evidence: if the server records nothing while the client resets, investigate a middlebox or network path next.
3. Test for an sshd crash or package defect
If the reset is repeatable during key exchange, check systemctl status sshd (or systemctl status ssh), recent restarts, kernel logs, and core-dump records. Useful checks include journalctl -k, coredumpctl list, and the distribution’s package-change history.
A documented Red Hat case shows the sequence: OpenSSH reached SSH2_MSG_KEX_ECDH_REPLY, then the client reported Write failed: Connection reset by peer because sshd died. That defect was corrected in a later package version. If your logs show the daemon exiting at the same protocol line, update through your distribution’s supported channel, verify the installed version, and reproduce before changing client timeouts.
4. Check unauthenticated connection pressure

sshd -T | grep -i maxstartups
MaxStartups limits concurrent unauthenticated connections. The current OpenBSD manual lists a default of 10:30:100: connections are accepted up to the first number, refused probabilistically as the count rises, and refused once the full value is reached. This protects a daemon under connection-flood pressure but can surprise a busy bastion host or automation system.
Inspect pending sockets with:
ss -tn state syn-recv sport = :22
Then examine established and pre-authentication populations in the SSH logs. Increase MaxStartups only when measurements show legitimate parallel demand. Pair any increase with firewall rate limiting, fail2ban-style controls where appropriate, connection monitoring, and a review of why so many clients remain unauthenticated. Raising the limit does not repair a crash or a blocked network path.
5. Test the network path and middleboxes
Compare the same destination from another client network. If the host has both address families, test them explicitly with ssh -4 user@host and ssh -6 user@host. A difference identifies an IPv4/IPv6 path issue rather than an SSH authentication problem.

Review firewall, NAT, VPN, and load-balancer policies for SSH idle-flow expiry, connection-rate limits, deep-packet inspection, and asymmetric routing. If you are authorized to capture traffic, take narrowly scoped captures at both endpoints and determine which side transmits the TCP RST. A reset generated by an intermediate address changes the owner of the fix.
For a long-running session, record whether traffic was idle immediately before failure. An idle interval is evidence for a liveness or flow-expiry investigation, not proof that the server is healthy or unhealthy by itself.
6. Configure keepalives only for a demonstrated liveness problem
For one client host, add a host-specific block to ~/.ssh/config:

Host example
ServerAliveInterval 30
ServerAliveCountMax 3
ServerAliveInterval sends an encrypted-channel liveness message after the specified period without receiving data. ServerAliveCountMax limits unanswered probes before the client disconnects. The Linux man-pages rendering of the OpenSSH client manual notes that with a 15-second interval and the default count of 3, an unresponsive server leads to disconnect after approximately 45 seconds; the exact elapsed time varies with traffic and scheduling.
The server-side equivalents are ClientAliveInterval and ClientAliveCountMax in sshd_config. Change them deliberately, validate with sshd -t, and reload the service using your distribution’s normal unit. Keepalives make failure detection explicit and can prevent some idle NAT expirations; they cannot revive a crashed daemon, override an authentication rejection, or pass through a firewall that blocks SSH.
Apply the repair that matches the evidence
When the daemon crashes during key exchange
- Preserve the client debug lines and the server timestamp.
- Check service status, kernel/OOM records, core dumps, and package changes.
- Install the vendor’s fixed package or security update, then validate configuration with
sshd -t. - Reproduce on a maintenance port or controlled window before declaring the issue resolved.
Do not mask a repeatable crash by increasing keepalive intervals; those settings apply after a connection is established.
When MaxStartups or resource pressure is confirmed
- Measure concurrent unauthenticated sessions and identify automation that opens many connections without reusing them.
- Correct client connection pooling or orchestration behavior first.
- Adjust
MaxStartupsin a change-controlled manner, retain abuse protection, and monitor authentication latency and rejected attempts. - Check memory, CPU, process, and file-descriptor limits before increasing concurrency.
When a security or access policy closes the connection
Use the server’s authentication and security-module logs to identify the rule. Verify the account, source address, allowed methods, port-forwarding policy, and any intrusion-prevention action. A policy denial should be corrected in policy; repeatedly retrying or weakening controls can turn a diagnostic event into a security incident.
When an idle path expires
Confirm the responsible firewall, NAT, VPN, or load balancer and its idle timer. Set keepalive intervals shorter than that timer, but account for battery use and fleet-wide traffic. For critical work, use a session manager or reconnecting workflow so a path interruption does not lose the application’s state. Keepalive traffic is a detection and preservation aid, not a substitute for fixing an unstable route.
A compact decision matrix
| Observation | Highest-value next action |
|---|---|
| Reset always occurs at the same key-exchange line; server shows restart or segfault. | Investigate and update the daemon package; validate configuration and reproduce. |
| Many new clients fail during busy periods; pre-auth counts approach the configured limit. | Confirm MaxStartups pressure, improve connection reuse and rate controls, then tune deliberately. |
| Only sessions idle for a predictable interval fail; active sessions remain stable. | Inspect idle timers and VPN/NAT/firewall behavior; configure appropriate protocol keepalives. |
| Only one network or address family fails; the server has no matching log entry. | Compare IPv4/IPv6 and alternate networks; capture packets and locate the RST source. |
| Client and server both log a clean administrative stop. | Find the maintenance, automation, or orchestration action that terminated the service or connection. |
Preventing repeat incidents
- Keep a tested OpenSSH package and configuration baseline, and validate changes with
sshd -tbefore reloads. - Centralize SSH client debug samples and server logs so timestamps can be correlated during an incident.
- Monitor daemon restarts, OOM events, authentication latency, pre-authentication counts, and rejected connections.
- Document firewall, NAT, VPN, and load-balancer idle timers alongside the keepalive policy.
- Use host-specific client settings instead of globally shortening intervals for every destination.
- For automation, reuse connections where possible and avoid creating large unauthenticated bursts.
- When a failure affects production access, keep an independent console or out-of-band path available before changing SSH policy.
The practical rule is simple: identify the phase, correlate both ends, and then change the component that the evidence implicates. A reset during key exchange is primarily a daemon, policy, or pre-authentication investigation; a reset after hours of idleness is primarily a liveness and path investigation.
