If a VPS prints Resolving Dependencies... Killed while running apt, yum, dnf, or a build tool, the process was usually terminated by Linux’s out-of-memory (OOM) killer. Physical RAM and available swap were exhausted, often because the resolver was competing with web, database, queue, or build processes.

Confirm that diagnosis in the kernel log, reduce concurrent workload, add temporary swap only when the filesystem has room, and repair any interrupted package transaction. If the same failure returns after workload and resolver tuning, a VPS with more RAM is the reliable fix; swap is an emergency buffer, not a substitute for memory.

What “Killed” means during dependency resolution

Package managers build and evaluate a dependency graph before they install anything. The graph can become memory-intensive when a system has many packages, several repositories, large metadata sets, or competing processes. Linux can terminate the resolver when the combined demand for RAM and swap exceeds what the VPS can provide. The shell may show only a bare Killed, with no package-specific explanation.

AWS documents this failure mode for patch operations: Cannot allocate memory and Killed can be emitted by the Linux OOM killer, and required memory varies with package count, package-manager behavior, and processes running at the same time. A Debian bug report likewise records aptitude consuming all available memory before failing. These are memory failures, not proof that a particular package is malicious or that a repository is necessarily broken.

  • EXACT-MATCH UPGRADE — 128GB (8X16GB) kit DDR5-6400 (PC5-51200), 1Rx8 Registered ECC, 1.1V, CL52, 288-pin. The precise rank, voltage, and timing your server's memory controller expects, so it's recognized at full capacity and runs at its rated speed.
  • VERIFIED FITMENT — Compatible with the Supermicro H14SSL-NT motherboard. The 288-pin Registered (RDIMM) form factor this board requires — not a UDIMM or SODIMM. Spec-matched to your board's memory-population rules.
  • ENTERPRISE STABILITY — Registered (buffered) architecture offloads the memory controller so every slot runs fully populated at full capacity, while ECC catches and corrects single-bit errors on the fly — stopping silent data corruption and unplanned reboots before they reach production.
  • CHECK YOUR CONFIG — Server and motherboard memory support varies by model. Consult your system or motherboard manual for supported capacities, approved DIMM population order, and installation steps before purchase.
  • LIFETIME SUPPORT — Backed by a lifetime replacement warranty and free US-based technical support.

Do not assume every dependency message is OOM. Repository DNS failures, signature errors, held packages, version conflicts, and unavailable packages produce their own diagnostics. Treat a plain Killed as an OOM suspect and verify it before changing repositories or removing packages.

Capture evidence before changing the VPS

Run the following as soon as possible. The figures show the state that existed at the time of failure and help distinguish memory pressure from a full disk or a package conflict.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check RAM and swap:

    free -h
    swapon --show

In free -h, pay attention to available memory, not only the used percentage. An empty swapon --show result means there is no active swap.

  2. Check all mounted filesystems, including the one that will hold a swap file:

    df -h

A full root or /var filesystem can prevent package downloads, unpacking, or swap creation even when RAM is available.

  3. Find memory-heavy processes:

    ps aux --sort=-%mem | head

Record database imports, application workers, build jobs, queue consumers, and other temporary processes. Their combined peak, rather than the resolver alone, is what matters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  4. Look for the kernel’s OOM record:

    sudo dmesg -T | grep -i -E 'out of memory|killed process'

On systems where dmesg is restricted or does not retain the event, use:

    sudo journalctl -k | grep -i -E 'out of memory|killed process'

Lines naming a killed process, an allocation failure, or an OOM victim confirm that Linux, rather than the package manager’s dependency rules, stopped the command.

Reduce the memory peak before retrying

Stop or defer nonessential work before running another resolver. Schedule patching during a low-traffic period, as AWS recommends for patch operations.

  • Pause CI builds, image creation, and compiler jobs.
  • Drain or stop queue workers and background consumers.
  • Defer database imports, backups, indexing, and report generation.
  • Temporarily scale down application concurrency if the service supports it.
  • Keep an administrative shell available so you can observe memory while the command runs.

Do not repeatedly rerun the same command while the VPS is still under pressure. Each attempt can leave downloads or partial configuration behind and can make the eventual package repair harder.

Add temporary swap safely

Swap gives the kernel a slower backing store for cold memory pages and can provide enough headroom for one dependency transaction. It does not make a small VPS perform like a larger one. AWS warns that heavy swap can degrade performance when storage, including limited-throughput EBS volumes, cannot keep up.

First confirm that the filesystem has sufficient free space and is healthy. Never create a swap file on a nearly full or unreliable filesystem. Follow your distribution’s documented method; a conventional Linux file-based procedure is:

  1. Create a file of a size your disk can safely accommodate. For example, this creates 1 GiB:

    sudo fallocate -l 1G /swapfile

If fallocate is unavailable, use the distribution’s documented alternative rather than guessing at a sparse-file setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Restrict permissions so ordinary users cannot read swap contents:

    sudo chmod 600 /swapfile
  3. Format and activate it:

    sudo mkswap /swapfile
    sudo swapon /swapfile
  4. Verify activation and available headroom:

    swapon --show
    free -h
  5. Retry the operation once while watching free -h in another session and checking the kernel log afterward. If you need the swap only for the repair, deactivate it when finished with sudo swapoff /swapfile. If it is a planned persistent setting, add it using your distribution’s documented /etc/fstab procedure and test it after a controlled reboot.

Swap should not hide a sustained memory leak or an oversized workload. If the kernel spends most of the retry paging, the command may finish slowly or the application may become unresponsive; stop and reassess instead of allowing the VPS to thrash.

Repair Debian or Ubuntu after an interrupted transaction

If the resolver was killed after it downloaded or unpacked packages, repair package state before attempting a broad upgrade. Run these checks in order:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check dependency consistency:

    sudo apt-get check
  2. List packages that are only partly installed or configured:

    sudo dpkg -C
  3. Finish pending configuration scripts:

    sudo dpkg --configure -a
  4. If dependencies remain broken, ask APT to repair them:

    sudo apt --fix-broken install

Review the proposed transaction carefully, especially removals, replacements, and service restarts. Do not accept a large removal set merely to make the command complete; stop and investigate the package relationships if the plan is unexpected.

Once the state is consistent, refresh package lists:

sudo apt-get update

apt-get install automatically attempts to resolve dependency problems for the requested packages. dist-upgrade computes a broader upgrade and can make surprising decisions, so inspect its plan before confirming:

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

When disk space or network stability is a concern, download archives without installing them by using APT’s download-only mode:

sudo apt-get -d install package-name

Downloading first separates the network and disk phase from configuration, but it does not remove the need for enough memory during dependency solving and installation.

yum and dnf: the same OOM diagnosis, different transaction details

YUM and DNF are also resolver processes competing for the VPS memory budget. AWS identifies yum, dnf, apt, and zypper as native package managers whose memory demand changes with package count, manager behavior, and concurrent processes. Therefore, the first response is the same: capture memory and kernel evidence, stop competing workloads, check disk space, and use temporary swap only when safe.

If the output says Killed and the kernel names the resolver, continue with the memory remedy. If it instead reports repository metadata errors, GPG or signature failures, unavailable packages, or explicit version conflicts, troubleshoot that condition separately. Clearing caches or changing repositories cannot fix an OOM event, while adding swap will not fix an invalid signature.

After the VPS is stable, run the distribution’s normal metadata refresh and package transaction, reviewing the proposed changes. Avoid starting several simultaneous YUM or DNF transactions; each process can duplicate metadata and increase the peak.

Composer: control PHP’s limit and concurrency

Composer has two memory controls that matter on a small VPS. Its documentation states that COMPOSER_MEMORY_LIMIT, when set, is used as PHP’s memory_limit. Composer also documents COMPOSER_MAX_PARALLEL_HTTP with a default of 12 and a range of 1–50, and COMPOSER_MAX_PARALLEL_PROCESSES with a default of 10 and a range of 1–50. Lowering concurrency can reduce the peak, but the selected PHP memory limit must still be compatible with the available VPS memory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a one-time, conservative install, set the limit and process concurrency on the command line:

COMPOSER_MEMORY_LIMIT=512M COMPOSER_MAX_PARALLEL_PROCESSES=2 composer install

Choose a lower or higher value only after checking free -h and the memory used by the rest of the application. A PHP limit that is larger than physical RAM does not create RAM; it merely permits Composer to request more before the kernel intervenes. If Composer is killed despite low concurrency, schedule the install without application workers or move the build to a machine with more memory and deploy the resulting artifacts.

npm: make the dependency graph reproducible

npm says installation is driven by npm-shrinkwrap.json, then package-lock.json, then yarn.lock when those files exist. Commit the lockfile appropriate to the project and use it consistently. A lockfile keeps versions and the dependency graph reproducible, which can reduce resolver churn, but it does not eliminate the need for adequate memory.

Run installs with nonessential services paused, avoid multiple npm installs at once, and monitor the kernel log if the shell again prints Killed. If the lockfile is stale or conflicts with the manifest, fix that project-level issue separately rather than deleting the lockfile as an OOM remedy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to upgrade the VPS

Use the following decision points after one controlled retry:

Situation Most appropriate action Why
No swap, enough disk, one-time maintenance window Add temporary swap and pause competing services Provides emergency headroom without an immediate plan change
Swap is active but the kernel still kills the resolver Reduce concurrency and workload, then reassess peak memory The combined working set still exceeds the VPS budget
Swap use remains high and the VPS becomes unresponsive Stop the job and move it to a larger or build-focused machine Paging is slower than RAM and storage throughput may be limiting
OOM recurs during ordinary updates or deployments Upgrade to a VPS plan with more RAM Recurring pressure is a capacity problem, not a one-off repair
Kernel log has no OOM evidence Investigate repository, package, disk, permission, or service errors A bare dependency error is not automatically a memory failure

Compare a candidate plan by peak RAM, baseline application usage, expected swap activity, storage throughput, process concurrency, package-manager behavior, and monthly cost. The evidence available here does not establish a universal RAM threshold or a standard upgrade price; the correct size depends on your workload and provider. AWS lists upgrading the instance as a direct remedy when memory exhaustion persists.

Prevent the next incident

  • Reserve maintenance windows when traffic and background jobs are lowest.
  • Record free -h, swapon --show, and kernel OOM events during deployments so peak usage is visible.
  • Keep a tested amount of swap as a safety margin only if storage capacity and throughput are adequate.
  • Use lockfiles for npm projects and avoid unnecessary dependency churn.
  • Limit Composer parallel processes on memory-constrained hosts.
  • Separate builds and dependency installation from production request handling when practical.
  • Review package-manager transaction plans before accepting removals, replacements, or broad upgrades.

The practical sequence is therefore: verify the OOM event, reduce simultaneous work, create safe temporary swap, repair any interrupted package state, tune the resolver, and upgrade the VPS when the measured peak still exceeds capacity.
