When an alliance will not form in ARK: Survival Evolved, the cause is usually identifiable: the wrong tribe rank is attempting the action, offline raid protection (ORP) is enabled, the server has set PreventTribeAlliances=True, an alliance-capacity limit has been reached, or the server’s rules prohibit alliances. Work through those checks in that order. On a correctly configured server, a tribe owner or administrator sends the invitation, the other tribe’s owner or administrator accepts it, and allied players and dinosaurs appear highlighted in cyan.
How ARK alliances are supposed to work
An alliance connects separate tribes without merging their ownership. The feature was introduced in Patch 235.0. Each tribe remains an independent organization with its own structures, tame ownership, permissions and tribe log. The alliance mainly creates a controlled set of interactions and communication between those tribes.
The normal workflow is deliberately permission-based:
- Open the Tribe Manager as your tribe owner or an administrator with the required tribe controls.
- Use the alliance option to invite the other tribe.
- Have the other tribe’s owner or administrator open the Tribe Manager and accept the pending invitation.
- Check the world for the expected alliance indicators and interactions.
A regular member may be able to see tribe information but still lack the controls to send or accept an alliance invitation. If the button is missing, unavailable or produces no pending invitation, first repeat the process with both tribe owners or administrators present. This is a permissions problem, not evidence that the server setting is broken.

What a successful alliance looks like
After acceptance, allied players and dinosaurs should be highlighted in cyan. An alliance chat channel should also become available. Those two indicators are useful because they confirm that the server registered the relationship rather than merely displaying an invitation.
Depending on the game mode and server configuration, alliance members can receive selected cooperative benefits, including:
- Access to specified allied building interactions.
- Interaction with powered outlets and related powered structures where the game permits it.
- Access to allied feeding troughs.
- Neutral-creature defense behavior that recognizes allied players.
An alliance is not shared ownership. It does not give another tribe unrestricted control over every structure, inventory, tame or permission setting. If an allied player cannot use a particular object, that may be the intended ownership boundary rather than a failed alliance.
Fix 1: verify Tribe Manager permissions and acceptance
Invite from the correct rank
Ask the tribe owner or an administrator to open the Tribe Manager and send the invitation. Do not troubleshoot server configuration until this basic test has been performed by the highest appropriate rank in both tribes.
Accept from the other tribe
The receiving tribe must accept the invitation; an invitation alone is not an alliance. The receiving owner or administrator should open the Tribe Manager, locate the pending request and accept it. If no request appears, cancel any stale request and send a new one while both tribes are online.

Confirm the result in the world
Look for cyan highlighting on allied players and dinosaurs and test alliance chat. Then test only the specific cooperative interaction you need, such as a trough or permitted building interaction. A missing feature that is outside the alliance’s allowed permissions is expected behavior.
Fix 2: check offline raid protection (ORP)
The ARK Official Community Wiki’s Tribes documentation states: “Servers with offline protection mode enabled will disable being able to create a tribe alliance.” This is a server-mode restriction, so changing tribe rank will not overcome it.
Unofficial server procedure
- Ask the server owner or hosting administrator whether offline raid protection is enabled.
- On an unofficial server where alliances are allowed, disable the relevant ORP setting in the server configuration.
- Save the configuration file used by the running server instance.
- Perform a full server restart, not merely a player reconnect.
- Have a tribe owner send a new invitation and have the other owner accept it.
The exact setting name can vary with the server’s ORP implementation, so use the control or configuration label supplied by that server’s administrative panel. If the server intentionally uses ORP, leaving it enabled means alliances remain unavailable by design.
Fix 3: remove the PreventTribeAlliances block
ARK’s server configuration includes PreventTribeAlliances. The official wiki describes its behavior plainly: “If True, prevents tribes from creating Alliances.” On an unofficial server, inspect the loaded GameUserSettings configuration and find that value.

Reload the setting correctly
Stop or restart the dedicated server after saving the change so the instance reloads its configuration. A player logout, map reload or reconnect is not a substitute for a server restart. If the setting appears correct in an editor but the game still blocks alliances, confirm the administrator changed the active instance’s file rather than a backup, template or different map profile.

Fix 4: check alliance capacity limits
The official tribe documentation describes a maximum of five alliances per tribe and up to twelve tribes in one alliance. Server configuration can impose lower limits through MaxAlliancesPerTribe and MaxTribesPerAlliance.

Count current memberships in the Tribe Manager and compare them with the values loaded by the server. Do not assume the documented five-and-twelve limits are available: an administrator may have configured smaller numbers.
Fix 5: determine whether server rules prohibit alliances
Some restrictions are policy, not technical failure. Official small-tribe servers prohibit informal alliances. That rule is documented in Community Crunch 135 (2018). On those servers, players cannot use a normal alliance workflow to bypass the small-tribe format.

- Other official server: Check that the mode’s published rules permit alliances and that you are not confusing a policy restriction with a UI problem.
- Unofficial server: Ask the administrator about ORP,
PreventTribeAlliances, capacity values and any custom rule set. - Non-dedicated session: The host controls the session configuration; alliance availability can differ from a dedicated server and from another host’s settings.
Do not attempt to evade an official rule with alternate characters or unapproved coordination. The correct remedy is to use a server whose rules allow the alliance structure you need.

A complete troubleshooting sequence
Use this sequence when the invitation button is absent, an invitation cannot be accepted, or an alliance appears to exist but cooperative features do not work.
- Identify the server and mode. Record whether it is official, unofficial or non-dedicated, and check the published tribe rules.
- Use owner or administrator accounts. Have one authorized person in each tribe perform the invite and acceptance.
- Check for a pending request. Resend the invitation only after confirming that the receiving tribe is looking in the Tribe Manager.
- Check ORP. If offline protection is enabled and the server is unofficial, disable it only if the server’s rules and play style permit alliances.
- Inspect
PreventTribeAlliances. Set it toFalseor remove the blocking value, then save and restart. - Inspect capacity. Compare current memberships with
MaxAlliancesPerTribe,MaxTribesPerAlliance, and the documented five-alliance/twelve-tribe limits. - Restart the complete server. This ensures the running instance, rather than an editor or control-panel preview, has loaded the new values.
- Test visible behavior. Confirm cyan allied indicators and alliance chat before testing a trough, powered outlet or building interaction.
- Separate ownership from failure. If chat and cyan indicators work but a structure remains inaccessible, verify whether that object is among the alliance-enabled interactions; an alliance does not transfer ownership.
Why an alliance can exist while features still seem broken
The feature is outside alliance permissions
Alliance status does not make two tribes one tribe. Inventory access, structure control and tame ownership remain governed by the owning tribe and the game’s specific interaction rules. Test a documented cooperative feature rather than assuming every object should be shared.
The server has changed since the invitation
An administrator can alter ORP, prevention flags or capacity limits after an alliance was created. If existing members remain visible but new invitations fail, compare the current loaded settings with the alliance’s membership count.

Only one side completed the workflow
An invitation that was sent but not accepted is not a functioning alliance. Have the receiving owner accept it, then verify cyan indicators and chat in the game world.
The wrong configuration instance was edited
Dedicated-server deployments can contain multiple maps, profiles or generated configuration files. A correct value in an unused file has no effect. The administrator should identify the exact instance serving the map, edit that file, save it and restart that instance.

Players who need dependable access to these settings generally require an administratively controlled dedicated-server deployment, whether self-hosted or managed. The important requirement is access to the configuration instance that is actually running, not a particular hosting brand.
What not to do
- Do not grant every member administrative permissions merely to test an alliance; use the owner or an established administrator.
- Do not repeatedly resend invitations while an ORP or prevention flag is active; the server will continue to reject them.
- Do not edit configuration while the server is running if the control panel may overwrite the file on shutdown; follow the host’s save-and-restart procedure.
- Do not treat a missing structure interaction as proof that the alliance failed when cyan indicators and alliance chat already work.
- Do not use alliance settings to bypass a published official-server rule.
