A phpMyAdmin HTTP 500 during a large SQL import does not, by itself, reveal whether the cause is an upload limit, a timeout, a PHP error, or a runtime mismatch. The useful first move is to capture the failure conditions and inspect the logs, then verify which PHP version and configuration Laragon is actually using. I can’t establish a specific fix for the titled case from the available details, so this walkthrough separates documented checks from one Laragon user’s reported result.
What to record before changing anything
Write down the conditions of one failed import. These details help distinguish a browser upload failure from a problem that occurs while phpMyAdmin or the database processes the dump.
- SQL file size and, if known, how it was generated.
- Whether the error appears before the upload finishes or after processing begins.
- The exact visible error and the time of the attempt.
- Laragon version, selected PHP version and build, phpMyAdmin version, and database server version.
- Any import-related PHP or web-server log entries from the same attempt.
In a Laragon support discussion dated November 23, 2025, one user reported a 400 MB dump and a 500 error despite increasing several PHP limits. Those are details of that user’s case, not recommended settings or a benchmark. Read the Laragon discussion.

Check the logs first
A 500 is a generic server response. Check the PHP error log and web-server error log for the time of a single reproduction before editing limits. In the November 2025 Laragon discussion, maintainer leokhoa advised checking the PHP error log. The participant reported that a particular laragon/tmp/php_errors.log file contained no entries, but the discussion does not establish a final diagnosis for that NTS PHP configuration.

If the file you expected to contain errors is empty, verify which log path the active PHP and web-server configurations use. An empty presumed log is not evidence that no server-side error occurred.
Confirm Laragon’s active PHP and phpMyAdmin versions
Do not assume that the php.ini you edited is the one serving the web request. Laragon can manage multiple PHP versions; use Menu > PHP > Version to confirm the selected version, then inspect the configuration belonging to that active version. Laragon documents adding PHP versions and adding phpMyAdmin through Menu > Tools > Quick add > phpmyadmin. Its current Operations documentation recommends phpMyAdmin 6 when using PHP 8.4 or newer. After changing the PHP version or configuration, restart the relevant Laragon service so the web request uses the updated runtime. Check version-specific documentation for compatibility details; the Laragon guidance is current but undated, and phpMyAdmin documentation versions vary.

Review the PHP limits as a group
The phpMyAdmin project’s FAQ for version 5.2.2 identifies four PHP settings to inspect for large imports: max_execution_time, upload_max_filesize, memory_limit, and post_max_size. It specifically says that post_max_size must be larger than upload_max_filesize. phpMyAdmin FAQ: large dump files, memory, HTTP, or timeout problems.

Review the values in the configuration used by the web request, and adjust them only in proportion to the dump and the machine’s available resources. The documentation does not prescribe universal values. After a change, restart the relevant service and retry once while watching the logs.
phpMyAdmin also has configuration options named $cfg['ExecTimeLimit'] and $cfg['MemoryLimit'] for import and export operations. Consult the configuration reference before changing them, and use them only after checking the PHP settings and logs: increasing a limit alone does not explain or fix every 500. phpMyAdmin configuration reference.

Consider a PHP build comparison only when it is useful
If the logs and version checks leave runtime compatibility as a plausible cause, a controlled comparison can help. In the November 2025 Laragon discussion, the maintainer suggested testing PHP 8.2.28 Thread Safe against the user’s PHP 8.2.28 NTS setup. The user later reported that PHP 8.2.29 Thread Safe imported the file successfully, while noting that other issues remained. Choose an import route that matches the failure

Use UploadDir with care
phpMyAdmin’s import documentation describes placing a SQL file in the configured directory and selecting it from the Import tab. Keep that directory outside the publicly served web tree where possible. The configuration reference warns that if an import directory is web-accessible, files may be exposed to someone who guesses their names; access controls are needed if it cannot be placed outside that tree. Use the MySQL client when terminal access is available
The phpMyAdmin FAQ documents importing with the MySQL client by opening a database connection and running source filename.sql; at the MySQL prompt. This bypasses the browser upload route. Follow the client’s connection and database-selection requirements for your installation; a successful file transfer does not guarantee that the SQL itself will execute without errors. phpMyAdmin FAQ.

- Record the dump size, failure stage, exact error, and software versions.
- Reproduce once while checking the active PHP and web-server error logs.
- Confirm the selected PHP version in Menu > PHP > Version and verify the configuration used by the request.
