Choose easy access for emergency cash or money you may need before a known date. Choose a fixed-rate bond only for money you can leave untouched for the full term and when the guaranteed return is worth giving up flexibility. If the direction of UK interest rates is uncertain, splitting your savings between both types can reduce timing risk.
An easy-access rate can fall after Bank Rate cuts but can also rise sooner after increases. A fixed bond keeps its agreed rate until maturity, so it protects you from cuts but leaves you unable to benefit from higher new rates during the term.
The short answer: which account fits your money?
| Your situation | Usually the better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You need an emergency fund or may spend the money at an uncertain time | Easy-access savings | You retain access without breaking a fixed contract. |
| You know you will not need the money for a stated period of six months to five years | Fixed-rate bond | The rate and maturity value are agreed in advance. |
| You want some certainty but do not want to bet everything on one rate direction | A split between both | Part of the balance is protected if rates fall while part can follow better rates if they rise. |
Do not decide from the headline AER alone. Compare access rules, withdrawal penalties, term, additions, tax, deposit protection and what happens at maturity. A slightly lower rate can be more useful if it prevents an expensive early withdrawal or keeps your emergency cash available.
How easy-access and fixed-rate accounts work
Easy-access savings
Easy-access accounts normally pay a variable AER. You can usually withdraw or transfer money without ending a fixed contract, although individual accounts may impose withdrawal limits, notice periods, minimum balances or bonus conditions. The rate can change during the life of the account, and providers may not move it immediately or by exactly the same amount as a Bank Rate change.

The main value is optionality. If another account becomes more attractive, you can generally move the balance without waiting for a maturity date. That flexibility is particularly important for an emergency fund, a house deposit with no fixed completion date, tax bills and other spending that could arise unexpectedly.
Fixed-rate savings bonds
A fixed-rate bond pays the agreed rate for a stated term. Common terms run from six months to five years, but the exact choices depend on the provider. The maturity value can be calculated when you open the account, subject to the provider’s interest-payment method and terms.
Access is restricted. Some bonds do not permit withdrawals; others allow closure or withdrawal only with notice and a penalty, often by deducting interest. A penalty can be large enough to remove the advantage of the higher rate, so treat the money as unavailable until maturity unless the product terms clearly say otherwise.

Fixed products may also restrict further deposits after opening. Minimum deposits, maximum balances, permitted additions and whether interest is paid monthly, annually or at maturity are product-specific; where a comparison does not state a value, read the provider’s terms rather than assuming a standard rule.
What happens when the Bank of England changes rates?
If Bank Rate falls
Variable easy-access rates commonly fall when Bank Rate falls, although the timing and size of the change vary by provider. A fixed bond already opened continues at its contractual rate until maturity. That gives the fixed saver protection from a falling easy-access return.
If Bank Rate rises
Easy-access savers can benefit when providers raise variable rates, and they can move again if a better account appears. A fixed saver remains on the old rate until maturity, so the opportunity cost is the difference between the fixed rate and the new rates available elsewhere.
Why fixed rates can move before Bank Rate
Fixed-rate pricing reflects market expectations about future interest rates as well as current policy. The Bank of England explains that its quoted deposit-rate series are weighted monthly averages and identifies the two-year overnight index swap (OIS) rate as a reference for fixed-rate savings bonds. Its April 2026 observations were provisional to 22 April 2026, so they provide context about pricing rather than an October 2026 quote for any particular account.

MoneyHelper reported historical average rates of 1.99% for instant access and 3.52% for fixed-rate accounts in December 2023. Those are historical averages, not current offers. MoneySavingExpert’s page updated 11 September 2026 lists live examples, but savings rates can change quickly; recheck the rate on the day you apply and read the account’s terms.

Match the account to when you need the money
Emergency and essential cash
Keep the portion needed for unexpected bills, job disruption, repairs or health costs in easy access. A higher fixed rate is not useful if accessing the money means losing interest or waiting through a notice period.
Spending with a known date
For a planned payment such as tuition, a tax bill or a house purchase with a firm completion date, compare the payment date with the bond’s maturity date. Leave a buffer for delays. If the date is uncertain, use easy access or a ladder of shorter terms rather than risking an early withdrawal.
Longer-term cash you can leave untouched
Money that will not be needed through the entire term can be considered for a fixed bond. Confirm that you can fund the account without using your emergency reserve and that the maturity date fits your wider cash-flow plan.
A mixed or laddered approach
You do not have to choose one account for every pound. Keep an accessible reserve, fix a portion for a term you can meet and leave another portion variable. You can also stagger maturity dates—for example, placing separate amounts into six-, 12- and 24-month terms—so that some money becomes available regularly. This reduces the risk of fixing everything immediately before rates rise or leaving everything variable immediately before rates fall.
Tax rules to check for the 2026/27 tax year
Personal Savings Allowance
MoneyHelper lists a Personal Savings Allowance of £1,000 for basic-rate taxpayers and £500 for higher-rate taxpayers in 2026/27. It also lists a £5,000 starting-rate band for eligible low-income savers. The allowance applies to taxable savings interest across your accounts, not separately to each account, so total the interest you expect from easy-access and fixed products.
Do not assume a fixed bond’s interest is tax-free because the rate is guaranteed. The interest is still savings income unless the account has a tax shelter such as an ISA or it falls within an applicable allowance.

Cash ISA allowance
The 2026/27 Cash ISA limit is £20,000. Interest in a Cash ISA retains its tax-free status, but transfers must be carried out by the new provider. Withdrawing money yourself and redepositing it can use allowance or lose the intended tax treatment, depending on the circumstances and ISA type.
When interest is counted
Check whether interest is paid monthly, annually or at maturity. A multi-year bond that pays at maturity can concentrate interest in one tax year, while monthly or annual payments may spread it across years. Payment timing can therefore affect how much of your Personal Savings Allowance you use in each tax year. Keep the provider’s interest certificate and terms with your tax records.
Protect deposits under the FSCS limit
Eligible deposits are protected up to £120,000 per person per authorised firm under the current guidance cited by MoneyHelper. A joint account has £240,000 of standard protection because it has two eligible holders. The limit applies to the authorised firm, not to each brand name: brands operating under one banking licence are aggregated.
- Check the provider’s authorisation and the firm named in the account terms.
- Add your balances across every brand using that licence, including current accounts and other savings.
- Keep the total within £120,000 per person per firm unless you have verified that a documented temporary-high-balance exception applies.
- Spread deposits across separately authorised firms if you need more standard protection.
Do not rely on a different logo or website address as proof that your money has a separate protection limit. The legal entity and licence are what matter.
How to assess a fixed-rate offer before locking money away
Check the access clause first
Find the exact wording for withdrawals, early closure, notice and penalties. Establish whether the penalty is a fixed fee, a number of days’ interest or loss of all interest for a period. If the terms do not permit access, assume the deposit cannot be used before maturity.
Recommended Free Tools
Calculate the maturity amount
Confirm the principal, AER, term, compounding basis and whether interest is paid away, added to the balance or paid only at maturity. Ask what happens if you open the account near the end of a tax year. The advertised AER is an annualised comparison measure; it is not always the same as the cash amount received over a short term.
Check funding and additions
Record the opening deadline, minimum and maximum deposit, permitted top-ups and whether all money must arrive in one payment. A bond that accepts only one initial deposit may not suit money arriving monthly.

Read the maturity process
Find out how long you have to give maturity instructions, whether the account rolls automatically into a new fixed term and which rate applies if you do nothing. Put the maturity date in your calendar so the money does not remain in an unsuitable product by default.
How to compare accounts step by step
- Ring-fence essential cash. Decide how much must remain instantly available and exclude it from fixed-term calculations.
- Set the latest date you may need the rest. Use the earliest plausible spending date, not an optimistic target.
- List the full rate. Record AER, any introductory bonus, the bonus end date, minimum balance and withdrawal conditions.
- Model both rate paths. Compare the fixed maturity value with easy-access returns if rates fall, stay level or rise. Treat these as scenarios, not forecasts.
- Allow for tax. Add expected interest from all taxable accounts and compare it with your 2026/27 allowance. Consider whether a Cash ISA is appropriate.
- Check protection. Aggregate balances by authorised firm and keep within the standard FSCS limit where possible.
- Verify live terms. Comparison pages can differ and rates are volatile. Recheck the provider’s rate, eligibility, access and maturity wording immediately before applying.
- Save evidence. Keep the confirmation, rate, term, penalty, maturity date and protection information.
Worked examples using hypothetical rates
The figures below illustrate the mechanics; they are not market quotes. They assume a £10,000 deposit and simple annual interest for clarity. Actual AER calculations, compounding and tax outcomes depend on the product and your circumstances.

Example 1: rates fall after fixing
A saver fixes £10,000 at a hypothetical 4.5% for one year. The gross interest would be about £450. If an easy-access rate later fell to 3.5%, the same balance would produce about £350 over a year before tax. The fixed saver has traded access for protection against that fall.
Example 2: rates rise after fixing
If the easy-access rate instead rose to a hypothetical 5.5%, it would produce about £550 on £10,000 over a year before tax. The fixed saver would remain at the agreed 4.5% until maturity and could not normally switch without the bond’s access penalty. The difference is the price of certainty.
Example 3: a split allocation
Suppose £6,000 is fixed at the hypothetical 4.5% and £4,000 remains easy access. If rates fall, the fixed portion protects £270 of gross annual interest while the accessible portion remains available. If rates rise, the £4,000 portion can follow better offers, while only the fixed £6,000 remains at the old rate. The result is less extreme than committing the entire £10,000 to one outcome.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Chasing a rate without checking the term
A five-year bond can show an attractive AER but be unsuitable if you may need the money next year. Start with the spending date, then compare products that mature before it.
Assuming every rate tracks Bank Rate exactly
Variable rates are set by providers and can change at different times. Fixed rates reflect market expectations and can move before an official Bank Rate decision. Use Bank Rate as context, not as a guaranteed pass-through.

Ignoring bonuses and withdrawal limits
An easy-access rate may include a temporary bonus or limit the number or value of withdrawals. Record when the bonus ends and what rate applies afterward.
Putting too much with one banking group
Balances under several brand names may still share one authorisation. Check the licence before adding a new deposit.
Missing maturity instructions
Automatic reinvestment can place your money into a new term when you intended to shop around. Set a reminder well before maturity and confirm the provider’s cancellation window.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFixing money needed for tax
Interest from a fixed bond can arrive in a single tax year and use more of your Personal Savings Allowance than expected. Work out the payment date, not just the annualised rate.
How to monitor an easy-access account
Review the actual rate after any Bank Rate announcement, when a bonus expires and whenever comparison tables show materially better offers. MoneyHelper notes that the top savings rate can change several times a day as banks compete. You do not need to move on every small change, but compare the net benefit after tax, transfer time, access restrictions and any minimum-balance requirement.
When switching, confirm whether the old account has a notice period, whether an outgoing transfer counts as a withdrawal and whether the new provider requires identity checks or a minimum opening payment. Keep enough cash in the old account to cover payments that have not yet cleared.
Quick Recap
Decision checklist
- Can I leave this money untouched until the exact maturity date?
- What is the financial cost of early access?
- Is the rate guaranteed, and for how long?
- Could a bonus expire or a withdrawal limit reduce the advertised return?
- When and where will interest be paid?
- Will the interest exceed my available 2026/27 savings allowance?
- Would a Cash ISA usefully shelter the interest, and would the provider-to-provider transfer preserve the ISA status?
- How much do I already hold with the same authorised firm?
- What will happen automatically at maturity?
- Have I checked the provider’s live terms immediately before applying?
