Choose a fixed tariff for protection from price rises during the contract; choose a standard variable tariff for flexibility and the chance to benefit if market rates fall. Neither option guarantees a low bill. A fixed deal locks the quoted unit rates and standing charges, while a variable deal can change as market conditions and Ofgem’s price-cap levels change. The safer choice depends on the premium charged for certainty, your expected stay, actual gas and electricity use, exit fees and how much budget volatility you can absorb.
What “fixed” and “variable” mean
Fixed tariffs lock the rates, not your total bill
A fixed tariff sets a price per kilowatt-hour (kWh) and a daily standing charge for a stated contract period. If wholesale energy costs rise, those agreed rates normally remain unchanged for the term. Citizens Advice says a supplier cannot increase an agreed fixed price unless the government raises VAT. Your bill can still increase when you use more energy, because consumption is multiplied by the fixed unit rate.
Read the offer for both fuels. A dual-fuel contract may fix gas and electricity for the same term, but the unit rates and standing charges are separate. A fixed tariff can also include an exit fee if you leave before the end date; the amount and circumstances are set out in the contract.
Standard variable tariffs move with the market
On a standard variable tariff, the supplier can change unit rates and standing charges. For eligible domestic customers, Ofgem’s price cap limits those charges, and the cap is reviewed every three months. A lower wholesale price can eventually feed through to a lower capped rate, while a rise can increase the rate at a review.

Variable does not mean that every bill changes each month. A supplier normally announces a new rate for a future cap period, and the amount you pay between reviews depends on the published rates and your usage. A price cap limits the rates, not the amount of energy you consume.
Side-by-side comparison
| Question | Fixed tariff | Standard variable tariff |
|---|---|---|
| Can the unit rate change during the agreed term? | Normally no, under the contract terms; a government VAT increase is the exception noted by Citizens Advice. | Yes. Rates can change with supplier pricing and Ofgem cap reviews. |
| Can the standing charge change? | Normally no during the fixed term, subject to the contract and VAT qualification. | Yes, within the applicable cap rules. |
| What happens if wholesale prices rise? | Your agreed rates are insulated for the remaining term. | Your capped rates may rise at a subsequent review. |
| What happens if wholesale prices fall? | You keep the agreed rate until the term ends. | You may benefit when lower rates are reflected in the tariff. |
| Exit flexibility | Leaving early may trigger an exit fee. | Usually easier to leave, but check the supplier’s terms. |
| Does it guarantee a fixed annual bill? | No. Usage still determines the bill. | No. Usage and changing rates both affect the bill. |
What Ofgem’s price cap does—and does not do
Ofgem describes the cap as a maximum for unit rates and standing charges; it does not limit the cost of your total bill. A household that uses more kWh pays more even when every applicable rate is at or below the cap. The cap is set every three months and varies by region, payment method, fuel and meter type.
The protection applies to eligible domestic standard variable tariffs. It does not automatically cover a fixed tariff, every tracker tariff, time-of-use arrangement, business contract or heat-network charge. Citizens Advice warns that a tracker may have a supplier-set cap above Ofgem’s level—or no cap at all—so do not treat the word “variable” as proof that Ofgem limits the rate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe framework is UK-specific. The Citizens Advice guidance referenced here covers England and Wales; Northern Ireland has a different regulatory arrangement. Confirm which rules apply to your location before relying on a cap figure.
When a fixed tariff is the safer choice
You cannot absorb a sudden rise
Fixing is primarily a budgeting decision. If a higher direct debit would force you to cut essentials, use credit or miss payments, the value of predictable rates can outweigh a modest premium. The protection lasts only until the contract ends, so note that date and plan for the next tariff.

You expect to stay for the full term
A fixed deal works best when you are likely to remain at the property and with the supplier until the end. Moving home, changing meter arrangements or switching for a cheaper offer can make an exit fee costly. Check whether the contract allows a fee-free move or cancellation in your circumstances.
The premium is reasonable for the protection
Compare the fixed offer with the current variable alternative using your own annual kWh. A fixed quote that is only slightly above the capped alternative may buy useful certainty. A large premium means you are paying substantially for insurance against future rises; that can still be rational for a very risk-averse household, but it should be an explicit choice.

Variable rates can be cheaper over a period in which prices fall, but that is not guaranteed. If the household has little emergency cash, prioritise the option that keeps essential bills manageable under an adverse price scenario rather than the option with the lowest optimistic estimate.
When a standard variable tariff is the safer choice
You value the ability to switch
A variable tariff avoids committing to a term that may become uncompetitive. This can matter if you expect to move, want to change supplier quickly, or are waiting for a better fixed offer. Confirm the actual notice and cancellation terms; “variable” is not a substitute for reading the contract.
Fixed offers are materially above the capped rate
If the fixed quote carries a large premium, remaining variable preserves the possibility of paying less when cap levels fall. Compare the whole annual cost, not just the headline unit rate, because a low unit rate paired with a high standing charge can be expensive for a low-use home.

You can tolerate changing payments
Variable is more defensible when you have savings or spare monthly capacity to handle a higher cap period. Set aside a buffer instead of assuming that a current direct-debit amount will remain unchanged.
You expect prices to fall, but accept that this is a forecast
Market expectations are uncertain. A variable tariff gives you exposure to falls, but also to rises. Treat a predicted fall as a reason to accept risk, not as a promised saving.
How to compare offers using your real consumption
- Collect annual usage. Use the last 12 months of meter readings or bills for gas and electricity. If you have moved recently, use the supplier’s estimate but label it as an estimate and revisit it after several readings.
- Record each quoted unit rate. Keep gas and electricity separate and note the units used by the quote, usually pence per kWh.
- Record each standing charge. Multiply the daily gas and electricity charges by the number of days in the billing period. Do not replace a standing charge with a generic monthly figure.
- Calculate annual cost. For each fuel, multiply annual kWh by the unit rate and add 365 days of standing charges. Add the two fuels, then include any stated discounts or fees under their exact conditions.
- Model more than one price path. For a fixed quote, calculate the known contracted rates. For a variable quote, calculate a current-rate case and a higher-rate case that represents the increase your budget could withstand. The exercise is about resilience, not a prediction.
- Check eligibility. Verify region, payment method, meter type, dual-fuel requirement and any time-of-use requirement. These can change both availability and price.
Use the supplier’s annual estimate only as a cross-check. A direct-debit amount is a payment plan, not the tariff price, and it can be adjusted when usage or rates change.
Questions to answer before signing a fixed deal
- What are the separate gas and electricity unit rates and daily standing charges?
- What is the exact start date and end date of the fixed term?
- Is there an exit fee for each fuel, and when is it waived?
- What tariff will apply when the term ends if you do nothing?
- Does the supplier allow a fee-free switch window before expiry?
- Does moving home, changing meter type or losing a qualifying payment method alter the price?
- Are any discounts conditional on direct debit, paperless billing or dual-fuel enrolment?
Save the confirmation email or contract summary. If a later bill shows a different rate, you can compare it with the agreed terms and challenge an error.
How to manage risk after choosing
If you fix
- Set a calendar reminder several weeks before the end date so you can compare alternatives before being moved to a default tariff.
- Submit regular meter readings, especially when moving in or out, to prevent estimated usage from distorting the bill.
- Keep an emergency amount for usage increases; the rate is fixed, but a cold winter or a larger household can still raise kWh.
- Check the exit-fee clause before accepting another offer. A cheaper unit rate may not recover the fee during the remaining term.
If you stay variable
- Watch the supplier’s notices for each cap-period change and update your budget when the new rates take effect.
- Keep a buffer for a higher bill rather than relying on the present direct debit.
- Review fixed offers again when market conditions change, but include any exit fee or outstanding balance in the comparison.
- Check whether your tariff is a standard variable tariff covered by Ofgem or a tracker with different protection.
Common mistakes and the practical fix
“The price cap means my annual bill cannot exceed the cap.”
Fix: Treat the cap as a limit on rates and standing charges. Estimate your own annual kWh to estimate the bill.

“A fixed tariff guarantees the same monthly payment.”
Fix: Separate the fixed rate from the direct-debit amount. Usage, billing corrections and supplier payment reviews can change what you pay each month.
“The cheapest unit rate is automatically the cheapest offer.”
Fix: Add standing charges for both fuels and multiply by your actual consumption. Low-use homes are especially sensitive to standing charges.
“Every variable tariff has Ofgem protection.”
Fix: Identify whether it is a standard variable tariff, tracker, time-of-use plan or another product. Ask the supplier what limits apply to rate changes.
“A short fixed term is always safer.”
Fix: Compare the premium, exit fee and likely end-of-term rate. A short term reduces commitment but may expose you to a renewal during an expensive period.

Likely move or major life change
Prioritise flexibility. A variable tariff or a fixed contract with clear, low-cost exit and moving provisions can reduce the risk of paying an exit fee for a home you no longer occupy.
Comfortable budget and strong preference for savings
Compare the fixed premium with the amount you could save if capped rates fall. Remaining variable leaves that upside available, but reserve cash for the opposite outcome and review the tariff at every cap change.
What the latest named figure tells you
Ofgem’s State of the Market: Energy Retail Highlights January 2026 reported that, as of October 2025, the cheapest tariff was approximately £265 below the price cap. That is a dated market snapshot, not a quote for your region or a guarantee of today’s saving. Supplier offers, cap levels, taxes and levies change, so recheck current prices immediately before switching.

Bottom line
Fix when payment certainty is worth the quoted premium and you expect to stay for the term. Stay on a standard variable tariff when flexibility and potential falls matter more, the fixed premium is high, or you can comfortably handle a rising cap. In either case, base the decision on separate gas and electricity rates, standing charges, actual kWh, contract conditions and the rules that apply to your region and meter.
