If WordPress displays your server IP in links or redirects, fix the problem in layers: point DNS and the web server at the right site, set both WordPress URL fields to the public HTTPS domain, remove any WP_HOME/WP_SITEURL overrides that lock those fields, replace old IP-based URLs stored in content, and correct reverse-proxy host and HTTPS headers. Then clear caches and test the domain, login, permalinks, media, feeds and redirects.
What the IP-address symptom means
WordPress builds most links from the site address it receives from its configuration and the incoming HTTP request. An IP can therefore appear for several different reasons:
Recommended Free Tools
- The domain’s DNS record does not point to the intended server.
- The web server sends the request to a default virtual host instead of the WordPress site.
- Settings > General still contains an IP address.
WP_HOMEorWP_SITEURLinwp-config.phpoverrides the database values.- Old IP links remain in posts, widgets, menus, theme options, feeds or other database fields.
- A reverse proxy passes an internal host name or inconsistent HTTPS information to WordPress.
The pattern helps identify the layer. If every page redirects to the IP, start with DNS, virtual-host routing and the canonical URL. If the homepage is correct but a few images, menu items or internal pages use the IP, look for stored content or template values. If HTTPS repeatedly redirects between HTTP and HTTPS, inspect the proxy headers before changing database values.
Identify the failure before changing WordPress
Use the domain for the first test
Open the site by its full public domain, not by typing the server IP. A direct-IP request does not contain the domain name that a name-based virtual host needs, so the server may deliberately return its default site. Compare the result at https://example.com and at the IP only as a diagnostic. The IP showing another site does not, by itself, prove that WordPress is misconfigured.

Record exactly where the IP appears
- Every URL and redirect: investigate DNS, the virtual host, WordPress’s two URL settings and proxy headers.
- Only selected links, images or widgets: search the database and manually edited content for the old IP.
- Only canonical tags, feeds or sitemaps: check the canonical site settings and any generated-cache layer after correcting the main URL.
- Only HTTPS requests or login: verify that the proxy tells WordPress the original scheme was HTTPS.
Quick symptom-to-remedy map
| What you observe | Most likely layer | First action |
|---|---|---|
| The domain opens the wrong site or a generic server page | DNS or virtual host | Check A/AAAA records and the server’s domain mapping. |
| The dashboard URL fields contain the IP | WordPress settings | Set both fields to the public domain with the correct scheme. |
| The URL fields are visible but cannot be edited | wp-config.php constants |
Inspect and correct WP_HOME and WP_SITEURL. |
| Homepage is correct; old IP remains in posts, menus or media | Stored content or database values | Back up, then perform a serialized-data-safe search and replace. |
| HTTPS loops or changes back to HTTP | Reverse proxy headers | Preserve the public host and forward the original HTTPS scheme. |
Step 1: Confirm DNS and web-server host routing
Verify the DNS records
At your DNS provider, confirm that the domain’s A record points to the intended IPv4 address and that any AAAA record points to the intended IPv6 address. Remove or correct stale records that send part of the traffic elsewhere. DNS changes can be cached according to the record’s TTL, so test from more than one network if the result differs by location.
Do not assume that resolving to the right IP completes the setup. The server must also know which site to serve for the Host value. A shared server can host many domains on one address; a request sent by IP lacks the name needed to select your site.

Check the virtual host or server block
In the hosting control panel or web-server configuration, ensure the domain and its www variant (if you use it) are assigned to the directory containing this WordPress installation. Apache virtual hosts and Nginx server blocks use a list of host names; the requested domain must appear in that list. Also confirm that the HTTPS listener has the same domain mapping and the correct certificate.
After changing host routing, reload the web server using your host’s documented procedure. Visit the domain over HTTPS and confirm that the expected WordPress homepage appears before editing WordPress settings. If the domain still reaches a different account, changing the database URL will not fix the routing.
Step 2: Set the two WordPress URL values
Understand the distinction
WordPress Address (URL) is the location where the WordPress files are installed. Site Address (URL) is the public address visitors type to reach the site. They are normally identical. They differ only when WordPress is installed in its own directory, such as files in https://example.com/wordpress while the public site is https://example.com.
Change the values in the dashboard
- Sign in to the administrator dashboard.
- Open Settings > General.
- Set WordPress Address (URL) to the URL where the WordPress files actually reside.
- Set Site Address (URL) to the public address visitors should use.
- Use the intended scheme, normally
https://, and do not add a trailing slash. - Save the changes, sign in again if prompted, and test a front-end page.
For a conventional installation in the document root, both fields would be https://example.com. For a subdirectory installation, do not copy the public root URL into the WordPress Address field unless the files are actually there. A mismatch can break administrative paths, media URLs and rewrite rules.

If you cannot reach the dashboard
Use one of the controlled methods below rather than repeatedly guessing values:
- Inspect
wp-config.phpfor URL constants and correct them. - Use your host’s database tool to edit the
homeandsiteurlrows in the options table after making a complete backup. - Use a command-line or migration utility that understands WordPress’s serialized data when replacing URLs throughout the database.
Step 3: Unlock URL fields controlled by wp-config.php
Recognize an override
Open the WordPress root’s wp-config.php and look for definitions similar to:
define( 'WP_HOME', 'https://example.com' );
define( 'WP_SITEURL', 'https://example.com' );
WP_HOME overrides the database’s home value, and WP_SITEURL overrides siteurl. When either constant is defined, the corresponding dashboard field is commonly fixed or non-editable. Replace an old IP, an HTTP scheme or an internal hostname with the intended public value, or remove the constants if you want the dashboard to control the values.
Edit safely
- Create a dated copy of
wp-config.phpand a database backup before editing. - Preserve the existing quotation marks, semicolons and PHP opening/closing structure.
- Use the exact public host and scheme, without a trailing slash.
- Save the file, load the login page in a private browser window and verify that both URL fields now show the intended values.
Do not define a second pair of constants elsewhere in the file. Duplicate definitions can produce confusing results and PHP warnings. If a hosting panel or deployment process regenerates wp-config.php, update the source configuration there as well.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Step 4: Replace old IP URLs stored in content
Why correct settings are not enough
Changing home and siteurl changes the canonical base used for newly generated URLs; it does not rewrite strings that an editor, widget, theme or plugin saved earlier. Old IPs can remain in:
- Posts, pages, reusable blocks and custom fields
- Text and HTML widgets
- Navigation menus and theme customizer settings
- Image, document and attachment metadata
- Theme options, plugin settings, feeds, sitemaps and cached HTML
- Database tables created by extensions or a previous migration
Back up before replacing anything
Export a full database and keep a copy of the files. Record the old IP and the exact replacement, including whether the old value used http:// or https://. A replacement that omits the scheme may miss entries; a broad replacement can alter unrelated text.

Use a serialization-safe method
WordPress and its extensions store some settings as serialized PHP arrays. A plain SQL REPLACE() can change string lengths without updating serialization metadata, causing settings to become unreadable. Use a migration or search-and-replace utility that explicitly supports serialized data, run a dry run if available, and review the number of replacements before committing.
For administrators using WP-CLI, a typical workflow is:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
wp search-replace 'http://203.0.113.10' 'https://example.com' --all-tables --dry-run
wp search-replace 'http://203.0.113.10' 'https://example.com' --all-tables
Adjust the old value to the exact IP-based URL found on your site. Review table prefixes and custom tables first; include them only when the tool can process their serialized fields safely. Avoid changing GUID values merely to make an old feed look new unless you understand the implications for feed readers and syndication.
Repair links that are not in the database
Search theme files, environment variables, deployment templates and server redirects for the IP. A hard-coded URL in a template will return after every database migration. Update it to use WordPress’s URL functions or the public domain, then clear any generated asset and page caches.
Step 5: Correct reverse-proxy and HTTPS handling
Preserve the public host
When a proxy, load balancer or edge service sits in front of WordPress, the origin request may contain an internal host. If the proxy overwrites HTTP_HOST, WordPress can generate links for that internal name or for an IP. Configure the proxy’s origin request to pass the public host, for example with the equivalent of:
Host: example.com
The exact directive depends on your proxy and web server. Trust only headers added by your own proxy; clients can forge forwarding headers when the origin is directly reachable.

Forward the original HTTPS scheme
If TLS terminates at the proxy, the connection from the proxy to the origin may be HTTP even though the visitor used HTTPS. WordPress must receive a reliable indication of the original scheme, commonly through X-Forwarded-Proto: https. Configure the web server or WordPress bootstrap to translate that trusted header into the HTTPS state expected by WordPress. A common pattern, placed only when the origin accepts traffic from a trusted proxy, is:
if ( isset( $_SERVER['HTTP_X_FORWARDED_PROTO'] )
&& 'https' === $_SERVER['HTTP_X_FORWARDED_PROTO'] ) {
$_SERVER['HTTPS'] = 'on';
}
Do not add this blindly on a publicly reachable origin. If an attacker can send the header directly, they can influence how WordPress detects HTTPS. Prefer the proxy and web-server configuration recommended for your hosting architecture.
Recognize a proxy-caused redirect loop
- HTTPS redirects to HTTPS repeatedly.
- Login works briefly, then returns to the login screen.
- Canonical links alternate between HTTP and HTTPS.
- The origin works when accessed internally but not through the public domain.
Fix host and scheme forwarding first. Do not solve a loop by adding layers of redirect rules; conflicting rules can hide the actual header problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 6: Check redirects, rewrite rules and generated URLs
Review server redirects
Inspect Apache, Nginx or control-panel redirect rules for the old IP, an incorrect host, or a forced HTTP destination. Keep one canonical policy, such as redirecting HTTP and the alternate host to the chosen HTTPS domain. Ensure the rule preserves the request path so /about/ does not become only the homepage.
Refresh permalinks
- In the dashboard, open Settings > Permalinks.
- Leave the desired structure selected.
- Click Save Changes once to regenerate rewrite rules.
- Open a post, a page, an attachment and a category archive in a private window.
Saving permalinks does not replace old IP strings; it only refreshes rewrite configuration. Treat those as separate fixes.
Check canonical, feed and sitemap output
View the HTML source of a page and inspect its canonical link, Open Graph URLs and media sources. Open an XML feed and sitemap directly. If they still show the IP after the base settings and database replacement are correct, clear the component that generated them and check its own site URL setting.

Step 7: Clear caches and verify the complete site
Clear caches only after the configuration is correct, otherwise an old redirect can make a fixed site appear broken. Purge, in order, any page cache, object cache, CDN or reverse-proxy cache, server cache and browser cache. Use a private browser window so an old permanent redirect is less likely to mask the result.
Run this acceptance checklist
- The root domain opens the intended homepage over HTTPS.
- The preferred host and scheme are retained after a fresh request; alternate hosts redirect once to them.
- Administrator login, logout and password-reset links remain on the domain.
- At least one post, page, archive and search result use the domain.
- Images, downloadable files, responsive image variants and enqueued scripts load from the intended host.
- Canonical tags, feeds and XML sitemaps contain the domain rather than the IP.
- Contact forms, REST requests and AJAX actions do not fail because of a mixed host or scheme.
- A nonexistent path returns the expected 404 or redirect, not a different site’s page.
In Tools > Site Health, review the reported Home URL, Site URL and permalink information as a final consistency check. Test from a network outside your hosting environment if DNS or proxy changes were recent.
Choose the least invasive remedy that fixes the actual layer
| Remedy | Best when | Advantages | Risks or limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dashboard edit | The URL fields are editable and the database contains the correct site structure. | Fast, reversible and uses WordPress’s normal settings. | Cannot repair DNS, proxy headers or old URLs embedded in content. |
wp-config.php correction |
The fields are locked or the dashboard is inaccessible. | Restores the effective values immediately. | Overrides database values until removed or changed; a syntax error can take the site down. |
| Single-value database correction | Only home or siteurl is wrong. |
Smallest database change. | Leaves old IPs in posts, widgets, menus and plugin settings. |
| Full serialized-data-safe replacement | A migration left the IP across many tables and content types. | Repairs links in one controlled operation. | Requires a tested backup and careful scope; careless SQL can corrupt serialized settings. |
| Direct hosting configuration | The domain reaches the wrong site or a default virtual host. | Fixes routing before WordPress runs. | Requires hosting or server access and correct DNS propagation. |
| Reverse-proxy configuration | The origin sees an internal host or the wrong scheme. | Preserves a durable public HTTPS canonical URL. | Must be secured so untrusted clients cannot forge forwarded headers. |
Common mistakes and recovery paths
Changing only the Site Address
If WordPress files are in the same directory as the public site, leaving the WordPress Address at an IP creates inconsistent admin, script and media URLs. Set both fields appropriately for the installation layout.
Adding a trailing slash or mixing schemes
Use one exact form, such as https://example.com. A trailing slash or a mixture of HTTP and HTTPS can create duplicate redirects and cache keys.
Running an unsafe SQL replacement
Restore the backup if widgets or plugin settings become unreadable, then repeat the operation with a tool that updates serialized lengths. Do not continue editing a damaged database in place.
Testing only from the server
Internal tests can bypass public DNS, the proxy and the certificate. Always make an external HTTPS request using the real domain before declaring the issue fixed.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Leaving the IP publicly reachable
After the domain works, restrict direct-IP access or configure it to return a deliberate response. This prevents search engines, caches and visitors from discovering a second, non-canonical copy of the site. Keep an emergency administrative path documented for your hosting team rather than relying on the IP as the public address.
Prevent the IP from returning
- Use the final HTTPS domain during migrations instead of building content with a temporary IP.
- Keep DNS, virtual-host, certificate and proxy changes in the same deployment checklist.
- Store the canonical domain in environment or deployment configuration so a staging value cannot reach production.
- After migrations, search for both the old IP and old HTTP domain, including custom tables.
- Make backups before every direct configuration or database edit and retain a tested restore.
- Monitor redirects and canonical URLs after changing DNS, certificates, proxies or caching rules.
A durable fix is complete only when the request reaches the intended virtual host, WordPress’s effective URL values match the public HTTPS domain, stored content no longer contains the old IP, and the proxy reports the same host and scheme that visitors used.
