If WordPress stopped loading immediately after a MySQL password change, the usual cause is a mismatch: MySQL now expects the new password, while the live WordPress installation is still sending the old one from wp-config.php. Update the database credentials in the production site’s wp-config.php, verify the database name, user, host and port, then test both the public site and /wp-admin/. If the credentials are correct, investigate database-server availability, user privileges, quotas and any custom code that maintains its own connection.
What changed and why WordPress stops loading
WordPress connects to MySQL using four values defined in wp-config.php: the database name, database username, database password and database host. Changing a password in a hosting panel, MySQL administration tool or command line changes what the database server accepts. It does not automatically rewrite the copy of wp-config.php deployed with your site.
When those values no longer match, WordPress commonly shows Error establishing a database connection. WordPress documentation says this message is usually caused by incorrect information in wp-config.php and directs administrators to verify the database name, username, password and host. A wrong password is the most likely explanation when the failure begins right after a password reset, but it is not the only possibility.
Before editing: identify the account and protect the configuration
Confirm that the WordPress database user changed
Make sure the password reset applied to the MySQL user named in DB_USER. A hosting-control-panel login, FTP account, server user or a different database user can have a similar name but has no effect on WordPress’s database connection. In the hosting panel, open the database or MySQL users section and record the exact database name, username, password and host shown for the site.

If the host assigns a database user to a database through a separate permissions screen, confirm that the user is still attached after the password reset. A password change should not normally remove privileges, but an account recreation or migration can.
Back up the live configuration
Download or copy the production wp-config.php before changing it. WordPress migration guidance recommends keeping a backup copy before configuration changes. Store the copy somewhere outside the public web directory and do not expose it through a browser; it contains database credentials and authentication salts.
Use the host’s file manager, FTP/SFTP or SSH. Do not edit a local development copy unless you have confirmed that it is the file used by the live domain.
Locate the production file
wp-config.php is normally in the WordPress root directory, alongside folders such as wp-admin, wp-includes and wp-content. On some installations the file is one directory above the WordPress files; WordPress can load it from there. Check the document root configured for the affected domain or virtual host rather than assuming the first WordPress directory you find is live.

Update the database password safely
- Open the live
wp-config.php. Use the file manager, SFTP or SSH and make a second copy before editing. - Find the four database constants. They normally look like this:
define( 'DB_NAME', 'database_name' ); define( 'DB_USER', 'database_user' ); define( 'DB_PASSWORD', 'current_password' ); define( 'DB_HOST', 'localhost' ); - Replace only the password first. Put the new MySQL password between the existing quotes in
DB_PASSWORD. Preserve the surroundingdefinestatement, quotation marks and semicolon. If the password contains a quote, backslash or other character that conflicts with the file’s quoting style, use the escaping format supported by your PHP version or set a password that can be represented safely; do not remove the quotes. - Compare every field with the hosting panel. Confirm
DB_NAME,DB_USERandDB_HOST, not justDB_PASSWORD. Some providers use a database host other thanlocalhost, such as a private hostname or a remote database address. - Add a required port to
DB_HOST. If the provider specifies a nonstandard port, use the host-and-port format it documents, for exampledb.example.internal:3307. Do not add a port merely because the password changed; add it only when the provider requires it. - Save with the original encoding and permissions. Keep the file as a PHP file and avoid editor features that insert formatting, a byte-order mark or smart quotation marks. Preserve permissions that allowed the web server to read the original file.
- Test immediately. Open the front end and
/wp-admin/in a private browser window. If both load, the core connection is working. Clear relevant page or object caches only after the connection has been restored.

The WordPress wp-config.php reference describes this file as the root-level configuration containing database connection information. Treat every value as environment-specific: copying credentials from staging, another domain or an old backup can create a second mismatch.
Test the repair without making the outage worse
Check both site surfaces
Load the public home page and a known inner page, then sign in at /wp-admin/. A successful login proves more than a cached home page. If one page works while another fails, the problem may involve a plugin, theme or custom database query rather than the core connection.

Server-side page and object caches can continue serving an old response, so purge only the relevant caches after you have confirmed that WordPress can connect.
Do not remove or rename wp-config.php
If WordPress displays the installation setup screen, stop. Do not delete or rename the configuration file to “start over.” A WordPress support case documents that removing wp-config.php caused WordPress to launch its installation routine because it could no longer find the existing connection settings. Restore the backed-up file, or put the corrected file back in the production root, and test again.

If the error remains after the password update
Recheck all four values and the port
Compare the live file character by character with the hosting panel. Look for a copied space, a truncated password, a missing account prefix, a changed database name or a host value that differs between staging and production. If the provider gives a port, include it in DB_HOST exactly as specified. A correct password paired with an incorrect host still produces a database-connection failure.
Verify the database service is reachable
Ask the host whether the MySQL or MariaDB service is running and whether the database server is accepting connections from the web server. WordPress lists server availability and hosting-account quota problems among possible causes of a database-connection error. A maintenance event, exhausted disk quota or stopped database service can look like a credential problem even when the password is correct.

Verify privileges and account status
Have the host confirm that DB_USER still has the required privileges on DB_NAME, that the account is not locked or expired, and that connections from the WordPress server are permitted. If the user was deleted and recreated instead of merely having its password changed, the new account may need to be granted access again.
Search for a second connection used by custom code
WordPress core normally reads the values in wp-config.php, but a custom plugin, must-use plugin, theme, deployment environment file or secret manager can hold separate database credentials. A WordPress support case records a custom plugin with its own connection file that also required the new password.

Search the production code and deployment settings for the old password, database hostname, username or connection functions such as mysqli and PDO. Check:
wp-content/plugins/, especially custom or privately developed plugins;wp-content/mu-plugins/and custom themes;- environment files and deployment variables used to generate configuration;
- secret-management or container settings that may override file values;
- scheduled jobs, import tools and reporting scripts that connect to MySQL separately.
Change only the connection used by the failing feature. Do not overwrite unrelated credentials or production secrets with values from another environment.

Use logs when the page is blank or gives a different error
A white page can indicate a PHP fatal error caused by a malformed wp-config.php, not just a rejected password. Inspect the WordPress debug log and the PHP or web-server error log instead of repeatedly changing credentials.
If your environment permits it, temporarily enable logging in wp-config.php before the line that says to stop editing the file:

Logging may expose the exact database host, authentication or PHP syntax error. Keep public error display disabled on a production site so credentials, paths and other internals are not shown to visitors. After diagnosis, return debugging settings to the site’s normal production values and remove any temporary diagnostic changes you do not need.

How to ask your host for effective help
Provide the domain, the approximate time of the password change, the exact error text, and confirmation that you backed up the configuration. Ask the host to check these specific items:

- whether the database service is running and reachable from the web server;
- whether the database account exists, is unlocked and retains privileges on the named database;
- whether the host, port or network allowlist changed;
- whether the hosting account exceeded disk, inode or database-resource quotas;
- whether server logs show authentication failures or an outage at the time of the incident.
Do not send the actual password in a support ticket. The host can verify account status without receiving the secret.
