If Yahoo rejects a WordPress message with 554 5.7.9, preserve the complete bounce, inspect the raw headers, and then correct three linked areas: the visible From: address, the SMTP server that actually sends the message, and the domain’s SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records. Yahoo can reject a message when a domain publishes DMARC with p=reject but the message has no valid DKIM signature or no aligned SPF result.

The reliable fix is to send through authenticated SMTP using a real mailbox on your own domain, authorize that sender in DNS, and verify the resulting headers in a fresh Yahoo delivery.

What Yahoo’s “bad From header” rejection means

The address a recipient sees in From: is only one part of an email transaction. WordPress can display one address while the hosting server uses a different envelope sender, and a remote SMTP service can add or rewrite authentication-related headers. Yahoo evaluates those identities together.

A 554 5.7.9 response is a policy rejection, not a temporary connection failure. Yahoo’s Sender Hub guidance says that when a domain is protected by DMARC with p=reject, a message without a proper DKIM signature or aligned SPF is rejected. Forwarding can also break SPF alignment, so a message that appears to work in direct tests may fail after it passes through another mailbox or service.

Do not diagnose this from the bounce subject alone. The diagnostic text and original message headers identify whether the problem is a forged-looking sender, an unauthorized sending server, a missing signature, or a domain-alignment failure.

How the addresses and authentication checks fit together

Item What it represents What to verify
From: The address shown to the recipient and used for replies It is a real mailbox or permitted sender on the site’s own domain
Envelope sender (SMTP MAIL FROM) The return-path identity used for bounces It is authorized by SPF and aligns with the visible From domain when DMARC requires alignment
Received and Mailfrom headers The servers and sending identity recorded during delivery The sending path is consistent with the From address and expected SMTP provider
SPF A DNS policy listing servers allowed to send for a domain Every legitimate WordPress or transactional sender is included
DKIM A cryptographic signature attached by the sending server The signature validates and its signing domain aligns with the From domain
DMARC A policy that evaluates SPF or DKIM alignment and tells receivers what to do on failure The policy and alignment match the way the site actually sends mail

DMARC can pass through either aligned SPF or aligned DKIM. Passing SPF alone does not guarantee DMARC success if the envelope domain differs from the From domain; likewise, a DKIM signature from an unrelated service domain may validate but still fail alignment.

Step 1: Save the complete Yahoo bounce

Keep the entire failed-delivery notice before changing settings. Yahoo says these notices normally contain both the reason for the bounce and the original message. Save the following details:

  • The SMTP response, including 554 5.7.9 if present.
  • The enhanced status code and every line of diagnostic text.
  • The Yahoo recipient address and the time of the attempted delivery.
  • The original message and its complete headers, not only the short summary displayed by a mail app.

Redact passwords, SMTP tokens, and private message content before sharing the bounce with a host or developer. Do not remove the sender, recipient, response code, or authentication results; those are the evidence needed to isolate the failure.

Step 2: Inspect Yahoo’s raw headers

Open the message’s “view raw,” “show original,” or equivalent source view in the mailbox that received the bounce. The exact label varies by Yahoo interface, but the goal is the unmodified header block. Search for From:, Return-Path:, Mailfrom, Received:, Authentication-Results:, Received-SPF:, and DKIM-Signature:.

  1. Record the address in the visible From: field.
  2. Find the earliest or bottom-most From: and compare it with the Received and Mailfrom fields. Yahoo’s header guidance says the topmost Received or Mailfrom value identifies the actual sending address in the delivery chain.
  3. Note the host named in the first receiving entry. It should be your configured SMTP service or a host you knowingly use, not an unrelated shared server.
  4. Read Authentication-Results: for the receiver’s SPF, DKIM, and DMARC verdicts. Capture the domains shown for each check.
  5. Compare the domains, not just the local mailbox names. For example, a message displayed as contact@your-site-domain can still have an envelope sender or DKIM domain belonging to a different service.

A mismatch is a strong clue that WordPress, the host, or an SMTP service forged or rewrote the visible sender. A mismatch by itself does not prove malicious activity; shared hosting, forwarding, and provider return-path settings can also create it. The authentication results determine whether the mismatch is actionable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 3: Use a domain-owned From address

Set WordPress’s sender to an address on the same domain that appears in your site’s DNS and DMARC policy. WordPress support guidance recommends using the site owner’s domain instead of a Gmail or Yahoo address when the site sends mail. If visitors should reply, create the mailbox first and confirm that it receives mail.

Choose one stable sender identity

  • Use a role address such as a site contact or notification mailbox that your organization controls.
  • Use the same From address for contact forms, password resets, order notices, and administrator alerts unless a specific workflow requires another permitted mailbox.
  • Do not let individual form submissions replace the From address with the visitor’s address. Put the visitor in Reply-To instead; the authenticated sender remains your domain.

Check WordPress and plugin settings

  1. Open the mail or notification settings for WordPress and each form, commerce, backup, or security plugin that sends messages.
  2. Set the From address to the domain-owned mailbox.
  3. If the plugin offers a “force From” or “lock sender” option, enable it so a form field cannot override the authenticated identity.
  4. Set the visitor or administrator address as Reply-To only when replies should go elsewhere.
  5. Save the settings and make a note of every plugin that can send independently; one uncorrected plugin can continue generating the same bounce.

Step 4: Route WordPress through authenticated SMTP

PHP’s default mail function may hand a message to an incomplete or poorly authenticated mail transfer agent on the web host. WordPress documentation explains that a site without a properly configured SMTP server may need a remote SMTP server instead. Authenticated SMTP gives the message a known sending path and lets the provider apply DKIM signing.

What to obtain from the SMTP provider or host

  • The SMTP hostname and submission port.
  • The required encryption mode, such as TLS or SSL, and whether encryption is mandatory.
  • An authenticated username, password, application password, or API-generated SMTP credential.
  • The sender address or domain identities that the provider permits.
  • DNS instructions for SPF and DKIM, plus any custom return-path or tracking-domain records.

Configure the WordPress mailer

  1. Install or open the SMTP mailer already approved for your site.
  2. Choose the provider’s SMTP transport rather than the host’s default PHP mail transport.
  3. Enter the provider’s hostname, port, encryption setting, and credential exactly as supplied. Do not put a mailbox password into a form that expects an API or application credential.
  4. Set the authenticated From address to the same domain-owned address configured in Step 3.
  5. Enable sender enforcement if available, then save the configuration.
  6. Send the plugin’s test message to a mailbox you control, including a Yahoo mailbox for the final check.

If the provider rejects the sender during authentication, first verify that the mailbox or domain identity has been approved in the provider dashboard. Changing only the visible From field will not authorize an unverified sender.

Step 5: Publish SPF, DKIM, and DMARC correctly

WordPress Developer Documentation calls setting up SPF, DKIM, and DMARC “a critical step to ensure deliverability.” These records work together, but each has a different job.

SPF: authorize every legitimate sender

SPF is a TXT policy at the sending domain. It lists the servers or provider mechanisms allowed to send mail for that domain. Keep one effective SPF record for the domain and include every service that genuinely sends WordPress mail. Remove obsolete services when a host or provider is retired. If the SMTP provider supplies an include mechanism, copy that mechanism exactly; do not invent an IP address or include value.

SPF evaluates the envelope sender, not merely the text visible in From:. A message can therefore pass SPF for one domain while failing DMARC alignment with the From domain.

DKIM: sign the message

DKIM adds a signature using a private key held by the sending service. You publish the matching public key in DNS at the selector and domain specified by that service. After publication, the provider must actually sign outgoing messages. A DNS key that exists but is not used, or a signature that fails verification after a message is modified, does not provide a DKIM pass.

DMARC: enforce alignment and a receiver policy

DMARC is published as a TXT record for the From domain. It checks whether SPF or DKIM passes with a domain aligned to the visible From address, then applies the policy you publish. A monitoring policy can help you observe traffic before enforcement; a p=reject policy asks receivers to reject messages that fail the required checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before enforcing rejection, account for every WordPress plugin, hosting service, form processor, help-desk system, and forwarding path that sends as the domain. Yahoo explicitly states that with p=reject, a message lacking a proper DKIM signature or SPF alignment will be rejected by Yahoo’s mail servers.

Keep DNS and provider settings in sync

  • Publish the SPF record at the exact domain used by the envelope sender.
  • Publish the DKIM public key at the selector and domain supplied by the SMTP provider.
  • Publish DMARC for the domain shown in From:, including the policy and reporting options your organization has chosen.
  • Wait for DNS changes to become visible, then verify from more than one resolver if results appear inconsistent.
  • Do not create competing SPF records or copy a DKIM key from another domain or provider.

Step 6: Interpret the Yahoo policy result

Once the raw headers show the actual sender and authentication results, classify the rejection:

Header evidence Likely issue Corrective action
From domain differs from envelope sender and SPF is not aligned Sender identity is inconsistent Use a domain-owned From address and configure an aligned return path through the SMTP provider
DKIM is missing or fails The provider is not signing, or the DNS key is wrong Enable DKIM at the provider and publish its exact selector record
SPF fails The sending server is absent from the domain policy Authorize the actual SMTP service in the single SPF record
SPF and DKIM pass but DMARC fails The passing domain is not aligned with From Align the envelope sender or DKIM signing domain with the From domain
Direct delivery passes but forwarded mail fails Forwarding changed the sending path and often breaks SPF Test direct delivery separately and rely on aligned DKIM for forwarding-tolerant authentication

If Yahoo’s diagnostic text specifically cites missing DMARC or a forged sender, fix the identity and authentication chain rather than repeatedly resending the same message. Repeated retries do not change the headers Yahoo evaluates.

Step 7: Retest and verify the finished message

  1. Send a new message from the WordPress test tool or the affected form to a Yahoo mailbox.
  2. Wait for delivery, then open the message’s raw source.
  3. Confirm that From: shows the intended domain-owned mailbox.
  4. Confirm that the envelope sender or return path is an expected domain and service.
  5. Check for an SPF pass, a DKIM pass, and a DMARC pass with aligned domains in Authentication-Results:.
  6. Compare the first Received: entry with the SMTP provider you configured.
  7. Repeat with the real workflow, such as a contact form or password reset, because a plugin can use a separate mailer or override the global sender.

Keep the successful raw headers with the original bounce. They provide a before-and-after record if another plugin, host migration, DNS edit, or forwarding rule later changes the delivery path.

Common failure branches and recovery steps

The test email never leaves WordPress

Check the SMTP connection error, hostname, port, encryption mode, and credential type. Confirm that the host firewall permits outbound SMTP submission and that the provider has approved the sender. A DNS change cannot fix a transport connection that never reaches the provider.

The provider accepts the message, but Yahoo still returns 554 5.7.9

Return to the Yahoo raw headers rather than the WordPress success notice. A provider accepting a message means it accepted the SMTP handoff; it does not mean Yahoo accepted the final delivery. Look specifically for DMARC alignment and for a DKIM signature from the expected domain.

The From address is correct, but headers show a different sender

Find every component that can send mail: the host’s PHP mailer, WordPress core, form plugins, scheduled-task plugins, and SMTP middleware. Disable or reconfigure the unapproved path and enable sender enforcement. If a provider deliberately uses a separate return-path, confirm that it supports aligned SPF or DKIM for your From domain.

SPF passes, but DMARC still fails

Compare the SPF-authenticated envelope domain with the domain after the @ in From:. SPF can pass for the provider’s return-path while remaining unaligned. Use an aligned return-path where the provider supports it, or make sure DKIM signs with an aligned domain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DKIM is published, but the result is “fail” or “none”

Check the selector spelling, record location, key formatting, and provider-side signing status. Multiple providers may use different selectors. A key copied to the wrong domain does not authenticate the WordPress message.

Only forwarded messages fail

Forwarding can change the connecting server, so the original SPF authorization may no longer match. Compare a direct message to Yahoo with one that traveled through the forwarder. Preserve aligned DKIM, and treat forwarding as a separate delivery path when evaluating DMARC behavior.

Choosing an SMTP approach for this fix

The best option is the one that controls the sender identity and exposes enough evidence to diagnose the next bounce. Evaluate a host-provided mailer and a remote transactional SMTP service using these criteria:

Decision area Questions to ask
Sender control Can it send from a mailbox on the site’s domain and prevent unauthorized From overrides?
Authentication support Does it provide exact SPF and DKIM DNS instructions and an aligned return-path option?
Transport reliability Does it replace an unreliable shared-host mail process with authenticated SMTP?
Diagnostics Can you view delivery logs, bounce reasons, message headers, and authentication results?
Operational fit Does it suit the site’s message volume, forwarding patterns, and compliance obligations?

A remote SMTP service is particularly useful when the web host does not provide a reliable, authenticated mail transfer agent. The service is not a substitute for DNS authentication: it still must be authorized in SPF, configured for DKIM, and aligned with DMARC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Preventing the next Yahoo bounce

  • Keep one documented domain-owned From address for each WordPress sending workflow.
  • Review the raw headers after changing hosts, SMTP providers, DNS, or form plugins.
  • Maintain a current inventory of every legitimate sender in SPF and DMARC planning.
  • Monitor DMARC reports or provider logs before tightening policy enforcement.
  • Test both direct delivery and important forwarding routes.
  • Store a recent successful header sample and the provider’s DNS instructions with the site’s operational records.
  • When a bounce arrives, preserve its full diagnostic content before deleting or retrying it.

Bottom line

Yahoo’s bad-From rejection is usually an identity and authentication mismatch, not a wording problem in the email. Use a real mailbox on your own domain, send through authenticated SMTP, align the envelope sender or DKIM signing domain with the visible From address, and publish complete SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records. Then verify the actual Yahoo-delivered headers; only those headers show whether the fix reached the message Yahoo evaluates.
