If page numbers disappear or restart unexpectedly in Word, check the affected section’s first-page header or footer, its link to the previous section, and its page-number format. Word can use different numbering and header/footer settings in different sections, so the right fix depends on where the change occurs.
Find the section where numbering changes
In Word for Windows or Mac, go to Home > Show/Hide (¶) to display formatting marks. Look for a section break near the page where the number disappears or changes. Microsoft explains that section breaks let you apply formatting to parts of a document; the break type determines where the new section begins.
- Next Page: starts the new section on the next page.
- Continuous: starts the new section on the same page.
- Odd Page or Even Page: starts the section on the next page of the selected parity.
Microsoft Support’s guidance is: “To use different page numbers or formats in different sections, create Page breaks and set page number for each.” See Format page numbers differently in different sections and Insert a section break.

If a page number is missing
Check Different First Page
Open the header or footer on the page without a number and look for Different First Page. When enabled, the first page of each section can have a separate header or footer, including no page number. If the number should be shown, add or retain it in that section’s first-page header or footer, or turn off the setting if the first page should use the regular header or footer. This setting can affect the first page of any section, not only the document’s first page. See Microsoft’s instructions for starting page numbering later.

Check the relevant header or footer link
If the page belongs to a section with different header or footer content, open the header or footer where the number should appear and inspect Link to Previous. Headers and footers are linked separately, so check the one that contains the number. Sections are linked by default; disable the relevant link only if this section needs different content. If Link to Previous is unavailable, verify that a section break separates the area. Microsoft explains these controls in Link to Previous.
If numbering restarts or continues when it should not
Page numbering can continue across a section break or restart at a chosen value. In the affected section, open Page Number > Format Page Numbers. Choose the number format you want, then select either Continue from previous section or Start at and enter the intended number. Use Continue when the sequence should carry on; use Start at when that section should begin at a specific value. Microsoft’s steps are in Format page numbers differently in different sections.

Omit the first page number but show 1 on the next page
To leave the first physical page unnumbered while displaying 1 on the second, enable Different First Page, then open Page Number > Format Page Numbers and set Start at to 0. Setting it to 1 instead would make the second page display 2. Microsoft documents this method in Start page numbering later in your document.
Choose the right fix for the symptom
| What you see | What to check | What to change |
|---|---|---|
| Number missing on the first page of a section | Different First Page and that section’s first-page header or footer | Add the number there, or turn off Different First Page if the layouts should match |
| Number disappears or changes after a section break | Section boundary and the relevant header or footer’s Link to Previous setting | Correct the section’s header/footer content or link as needed |
| Sequence unexpectedly starts over or continues | Format Page Numbers for the affected section | Choose Continue from previous section or Start at the intended value |
| First page has no number; second page should show 1 | Different First Page and Start at | Enable Different First Page and set Start at to 0 |
