If Windows keeps offering an update you believe you installed, first check its status in Update history, note any error code, restart the PC, and check for updates again. A repeated offer does not prove the update is installed and recognized: Microsoft says it can happen when installation fails or Windows Update cannot detect the update.
Why Windows keeps offering the update
Microsoft identifies two main causes: the update may not have installed correctly, or Windows Update settings may not detect it. A restart can also be needed to finish actions left pending by an earlier update.
On work or school PCs, the offer may be affected by update-management settings and rollout timing. Microsoft notes that factors such as Windows build, branch, locale, architecture, update source, and deployment configuration can affect which updates a device is offered.

- Open Settings and go to Windows Update > Update history. The exact labels may vary by Windows release.
- Find the update by its name or KB number. Check whether it shows as failed or has an associated error code.
- Write down the KB number and error code, if shown. These details are more useful for diagnosing the problem than the general impression that the update was installed.
Microsoft’s guidance on repeated offers says: “This may happen if the update isn’t installed correctly the first time, or if your Windows Update settings can’t detect the update.” Microsoft Support explains repeated offers.

Restart, troubleshoot, and check again
- Restart Windows. This can let pending update actions finish.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter. On Windows 11, Microsoft directs users to the Get Help app; Windows 10 and Windows 11 also have documented troubleshooter steps in Settings. Follow the instructions for your Windows version in Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guide.
- Return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install any available items, then restart if prompted.
If the same update is still offered
Verify that the update applies to this PC
Check the update’s KB number and package details against your Windows version and processor architecture. A package intended for a different Windows version or architecture is not applicable. Also check whether the update is already installed and whether its listed prerequisites are present. Microsoft’s guidance on checking installed updates and Windows Update troubleshooting documentation can help with these checks.
Check whether updates are managed
If this is a work or school device, ask the IT administrator whether an update source such as Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), deployment configuration, or staged rollout timing controls the offer. Do not change managed update settings without the administrator’s guidance.

What to do if the offer persists
Keep the update’s KB number, your Windows version and build, and any error code. Windows Update and servicing logs can help distinguish whether the issue is with the offer, download, installation, or restart stage. Microsoft documents how to interpret Windows Update logs.

Avoid starting with manual cache deletion, registry edits, or third-party repair utilities. The Microsoft guidance linked above supports checking history, restarting, running the troubleshooter, confirming applicability, and using error details to investigate; it does not establish destructive reset steps as appropriate for every case.
