If Windows suddenly types different characters than the ones printed on your keys, switch the active keyboard layout from French to the one you want. Select the input-language indicator in the taskbar and choose the correct layout, or press Windows+Space to cycle through installed layouts. If French keeps returning, remove that layout in Settings.
Switch back to your preferred keyboard layout
The active keyboard layout controls how key presses are interpreted. It is separate from the Windows display language, so a French layout can be active even when menus and other Windows text appear in English. Microsoft explains that changing the keyboard layout does not change the display language (Microsoft Support: Manage language and keyboard/input layout settings).
- Select the input-language indicator in the taskbar and choose your intended keyboard layout.
- Alternatively, press Windows+Space to cycle through installed layouts. Watch the taskbar indicator to see which layout is selected.
These steps select an installed layout; they do not change Windows’ display language. If Windows+Space does nothing, Microsoft says only one keyboard layout is installed. Check the layouts in Settings.

Remove French if Windows keeps switching to it
Use the Settings path for your Windows version. Removing a keyboard layout is different from removing a language pack; you do not need to remove an entire language just to get rid of an extra layout.

Windows 11
- Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Find the language entry that contains the unwanted keyboard. Select its More menu, then Language options.
- Under Keyboards, find the French layout and select Remove.
- If French is not listed under the language you expected, check the entry for your current Windows display language. A layout may be listed there rather than under a matching language pack.
Windows 10
- Open Settings > Time & language > Language.
- Select the language that contains the unwanted layout, then open Options.
- Under Keyboards, select the French layout and remove it.
- If you cannot find it, check both the current display-language entry and the French-language entry.
If Remove is unavailable, the selected layout may be the only one installed for the current display language. Add another suitable keyboard layout first, then remove French.
Which shortcut should you use?
The taskbar input indicator and Windows+Space are the primary ways to switch among installed layouts. Microsoft also documents Alt+Shift as a shortcut when two or more layouts are enabled, but its availability depends on configuration. The Language bar may be hidden or absent when only one layout is enabled (Microsoft Support: Switch between languages using the Language bar).

Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 keyboard settings remain configurable, but Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for the operating system. That support change does not prevent you from switching or removing a keyboard layout.
