This error means Windows refused an SMB connection because the share tried to sign in as an unauthenticated guest. The safest fix is to configure the share with a username and password, then connect with that account. Enable guest access on the Windows client only when the share cannot use an account, the device is trusted, and the change is approved.
What the security-policy error means
Windows displays “You can’t access this shared folder because your organization’s security policies block unauthenticated guest access” when an SMB file server attempts guest access without a username and password. The message does not by itself mean the network cable, share path, or folder is broken. Microsoft documents this message among shared-folder errors in its File Explorer troubleshooting guidance.
Routers with USB storage, NAS devices, and other SMB servers may offer guest access. Windows blocks this kind of unauthenticated connection by default because it lacks the protections of signing in with an account. The error can appear on Windows versions other than Windows 11 24H2; that release introduced a separate SMB-signing default change that can also affect guest shares.
First, identify the share and the failure
Note the device hosting the share—such as a Windows PC, NAS, or router—and whether the error began after a Windows update. Confirm the exact message. If it is the guest-policy message, start with authentication rather than changing network-discovery settings or disabling security features. Other messages or a failure that remains after the guest error disappears may have a different cause.

Use an account on the share host if possible
- Open the host device’s sharing or SMB settings and check whether it can require a named account. For a Windows PC, use an account the host recognizes; for an appliance, create or use an account supported by that device.
- Connect to the share using the host’s account credentials rather than choosing an anonymous or guest sign-in. If Windows asks for credentials, enter the username and password configured on the share host.
- If the account is rejected, check the host’s permissions for that account and verify that you are connecting to the intended share. A valid login does not automatically grant access to every folder.
Microsoft recommends disabling insecure guest logons and configuring file servers for authenticated access. This avoids weakening the Windows client’s guest-access protections.
Allow guest logons only when the exception is necessary
If the device truly offers no authenticated access, ask its owner or administrator whether enabling guest access on this Windows PC is permitted. Guest sessions are unauthenticated; Microsoft warns that allowing them removes important protections, including SMB signing and encryption for those guest sessions. Restrict any exception to a trusted share and follow your organization’s policy.

Enable the documented Group Policy setting
- Open Local Group Policy Editor by searching Windows for Edit group policy.
- Go to
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Network > Lanman Workstation. - Open Enable insecure guest logons, select Enabled, and apply the change.
- Try the share again. If the setting is managed by your organization, contact its administrator rather than overriding it.
Microsoft documents this policy and recommends against enabling it as a routine setting in its LanmanWorkstation Policy CSP.

Microsoft also documents the DWORD value AllowInsecureGuestAuth set to 1 under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindowsLanmanWorkstation. Use the registry only if your administrator directs you to do so: incorrect edits can affect Windows configuration, and organizational policy may control this setting. The Group Policy route is preferable when available.

Check SMB signing if the guest error changes or access still fails
SMB signing helps protect SMB traffic from tampering. Microsoft says signing is required by default on Windows 11 version 24H2 and later for Enterprise, Pro, and Education editions, and on Windows Server 2025. A signing requirement also prevents guest access. This is distinct from the broader guest-logon policy and can matter with older or third-party SMB devices.
If the server supports signing, enable it there and use authenticated access. Microsoft cautions: “We don’t recommend disabling SMB signing as a workaround for third-party servers.” See Microsoft Learn’s Control SMB signing behavior and SMB security hardening in Windows Server and Windows Client for the version-specific behavior. If the guest-policy message is gone, troubleshoot the remaining symptom
Once Windows no longer reports blocked guest access, a continuing failure may point to discovery, permissions, protocol compatibility, or the network path. Microsoft’s File Explorer guidance covers checks including:
- Network discovery and sharing: Confirm the network and file-sharing settings permit access where appropriate.
- Function Discovery services: Check the services used to discover devices on the network.
- Folder permissions: Verify both share-level and file-system permissions for the account being used.
- SMB version: Consider SMB 1.0 client support only if the server requires it; do not enable an older protocol casually.
- Network path: Test the share with the
net usecommand as described by Microsoft to distinguish a path or connection problem from File Explorer discovery.
These are separate troubleshooting branches, not substitutes for addressing an exact unauthenticated-guest refusal. Avoid applying unrelated changes at random; use the new error message or test result to choose the next check.

Choose the fix that matches the cause
- The host can require an account: Configure and use authenticated access. This is the preferred fix.
- The host only supports guest access: Confirm trust and authorization first; then use the documented client policy only if the security tradeoff is acceptable.
- The share still fails after authentication or policy changes: Check SMB signing compatibility, permissions, discovery, protocol requirements, and the network path as distinct causes.
