If your Windows 11 wallpaper looks blurry, stretched, cropped, or too small, first check its fit mode. If the whole display looks soft, check that Windows is using the monitor’s recommended resolution. These settings address different problems: fit controls how the picture is placed, while display resolution controls the output for the screen.
Choose a wallpaper fit that matches the symptom
Open Settings > Personalization > Background, or right-click the desktop and choose Personalize. Under the background picture options, select Browse if you need to choose a different image, then adjust the fit setting.
Microsoft describes these fit options as follows:
| Fit option | What it does | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Fill | Covers the screen; parts of the image may be cropped. | Filling the desktop when cropping the edges is acceptable. |
| Fit | Preserves the image’s proportions; empty bars may remain around it. | Showing the entire image without distorting it. |
| Stretch | Expands the image to cover the screen and can distort it. | Cases where full coverage matters more than preserving proportions. |
| Center | Displays the image without resizing it. | Keeping the original size, even if the picture does not cover the desktop. |
| Tile | Repeats the image across the desktop. | Small images intended to form a repeating pattern. |
| Span | Spreads the image across multiple displays. | Using one background across more than one monitor. |
Microsoft’s descriptions are in its Windows desktop background instructions. A picture with different proportions from the screen may be cropped by Fill or leave bars with Fit. Stretch may make it look unnaturally wide or tall. No one fit option is best for every image; choose according to whether you want complete coverage, the whole picture visible, or its proportions preserved.

If text, icons, and other on-screen content also seem blurry—not just the wallpaper—check the resolution for the affected monitor. Go to Settings > System > Display, select that display, and look under Scale & layout for Display resolution. Choose the option marked Recommended.

Microsoft notes that a resolution below a display’s native resolution can make text less sharp or cause the picture to appear small, centered, bordered, or stretched. If Windows changes the resolution unexpectedly, check for a graphics-driver update through Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. See Microsoft’s screen resolution and layout guidance for these settings.
Fix wallpaper that changed after connecting an external monitor
If the wallpaper became too small, too large, or cropped on an external screen after you connected it, Windows may be affected by the resolution difference between the built-in and external displays. Microsoft documents this specific fit issue and provides a workaround:

- Ergonomic Stand - The ergonomic stand makes it easy to flexibly adjust the tilt of the screen in the optimal position for you.
- What's In The Box - Stand Body, Stand Base, Screws, Power Adapter, HDMI Cable, Quick Start Guide, Registration Card, Warranty.
- Open Settings > System > Display and select the external monitor.
- Under Scale & layout, temporarily choose a different Display resolution.
- When Windows asks whether to keep the setting, choose Revert. If you make no choice, Windows reverts automatically.
This is a workaround for the external-display wallpaper symptom described by Microsoft, not a general fix for every blurry image. Follow the steps in Microsoft’s external-display wallpaper guidance.
If the wallpaper image itself is pixelated
If the display resolution is recommended and the fit looks right, but blockiness remains in the wallpaper, inspect the image file or try a higher-detail version suited to the display. Changing Fit, Fill, or another placement option changes how Windows displays the image; it cannot restore detail that is missing from the source picture. Microsoft’s guidance does not specify a minimum wallpaper pixel size, so there is no supported universal resolution threshold to apply.
