If some Windows 11 computers appear inconsistently under File Explorer’s Network, check that the PCs share the same local network, use the Private profile on trusted networks, and have Network discovery and File and printer sharing enabled. Then check Windows’ discovery services. A computer missing from the list may still be reachable directly by its computer or share path, so test access separately.
1. Confirm the PCs are on the same network and use the right profile
Check that every involved PC is connected to the same local network. On each computer, open Settings > Network & internet, select its Wi-Fi network or Ethernet connection, and review Network profile type.
For a home or workplace network whose people and devices you trust, set the profile to Private. Windows 11 uses Public for new connections by default. Microsoft says a Public profile hides the PC from other devices, while Private allows discoverability and file and printer sharing. Use Public on networks you do not trust; changing a profile to Private makes the PC more discoverable on that network. See Microsoft’s explanation of Windows 11 network profiles.
2. Enable Network discovery and file sharing
On each PC that should be discoverable or share files, open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Advanced sharing settings. You can also search Settings for “manage advanced sharing settings.” Under Private networks, turn on Network discovery and File and printer sharing.

These settings control related but distinct functions: discovery helps PCs appear in the Network list; file and printer sharing allows sharing resources. Microsoft’s file-sharing guidance also describes turning off password-protected sharing under All Networks. Treat that as an optional, security-sensitive choice: turning it off reduces access controls, so do not disable it casually, especially on networks with people or devices you do not fully trust. 3. Check the Windows discovery services
Windows relies on several services for network discovery. Open the Services console by pressing Windows key + R, entering services.msc, and pressing Enter. Check these services:

For any service that is stopped, start it and set Startup type to Automatic, following Microsoft’s file-sharing troubleshooting instructions. If the service is already running, leave it running and continue with the other checks.
4. Test the computer or shared folder directly
A missing entry in File Explorer’s Network list does not prove that a particular shared folder is inaccessible. In File Explorer’s address bar, try a known path such as \ComputerName or \ComputerNameShareName, substituting the actual computer and share names.

- If the path opens: The share is reachable even though the PC is not listed under Network. The list’s visibility and access to a specific share are separate checks.
- If the path fails: Check that the target PC is powered on and that your account has permission to access the computer or share. Confirm the share name is correct.
You can also map a known share in File Explorer using This PC > More > Map network drive. Microsoft documents these direct access and mapping steps in its file-sharing guide.
5. Update Windows, then consider Network reset as a last resort
Microsoft recommends keeping the involved PCs updated. If the preceding checks do not help, Network reset is an option, but it is more disruptive than changing discovery settings. Open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset and use it only after simpler checks fail.

Network reset removes installed network adapters and their settings, then reinstalls the adapters with default settings after the PC restarts. You may need to reconfigure VPN software or Hyper-V virtual switches. Known connections may also become Public again after the reset, so review each network profile afterward. What the checks tell you
Work through the checks in order: confirm the PCs share a local network, distinguish a missing Network-list entry from a failed direct path, verify trusted-network profiles and sharing settings, and check the discovery services. If a direct path works, the immediate issue is visibility in the list rather than access to that share. If direct access fails too, the host’s availability or your permissions may also need attention.

Microsoft’s support guidance provides general Windows 11 troubleshooting steps; it does not identify the cause on a particular network without details such as Windows builds, wired or wireless connections, profiles, and direct-path results.
