To change speaker settings in Windows 10, select the intended device from the taskbar speaker menu, then open Start > Settings > System > Sound to adjust it. If sound is missing, quiet, distorted, or silent in only one app, work through the checks below in order: output selection, volume, enhancements, format, and device detection.
Choose where Windows plays sound
- Select the speaker icon on the taskbar. If it is not visible, check the taskbar overflow area.
- Open the audio-device list and select the connected speakers, headphones, monitor, or other output you want to use.
- Play audio to confirm it is coming from the intended device.
USB and HDMI devices may need to be selected as the default playback device as well. For the older playback-device controls, open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound > Playback, select the device, and choose the available default-device command. Check system and app volume
Windows system volume and an individual app’s volume are separate. Right-click the taskbar speaker icon and open Volume mixer. Make sure the system and the app you are using are not muted and that their sliders are at usable levels. Also check that powered speakers are switched on, cables are connected, and any physical volume control is turned up.

Audio enhancements can interfere with playback. To test whether they are the cause, open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound, select the playback device, and open Properties > Enhancements. Select Disable all enhancements or the equivalent option shown for that device, apply the change, and test audio again. Depending on the device and Windows build, an audio-enhancements control may also appear under Start > Settings > System > Sound. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance recommends disabling enhancements as a test, not as a universal setting: Fix sound or audio problems in Windows.

Try another default audio format for quiet or distorted sound
If the output is still too quiet or distorted, use the playback device’s properties to test another format:
- Open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound > Playback.
- Select the active playback device and open Properties.
- Choose the Advanced tab and select a different Default format.
- Apply the change and test the same audio again.
There is no single format established as best for every device. Try an available alternative and keep it only if it resolves the problem. Microsoft’s steps are at Fix low or quiet sound in Windows.

Fix silence in one app while other sounds work
When system sounds play but a particular app is silent, inspect that app’s own mixer settings before changing system-wide audio. Open Start > Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer. Check the app’s volume and, if available, the output device assigned specifically to it. If those settings are correct and the app still has no sound, Windows Audio services or an audio-driver problem may be involved. Troubleshoot an output device that is missing
If the speakers or headphones do not appear in the output list, check whether Windows detects and enables the device:

- Open Device Manager and expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Check whether the audio device is present and enabled. If it is not listed, use Device Manager’s option to show hidden devices, then scan for hardware changes.
- If the device remains missing, download the audio driver for your Windows version from the computer manufacturer’s or sound-card manufacturer’s support site, install it, and restart the PC.
Use the manufacturer’s driver for the specific computer or sound card rather than assuming a generic driver is the right fix. See Microsoft’s guide to missing or undetected audio output devices.
Enable spatial sound if you want it
Spatial sound is an optional listening setting, not a required sound repair. Microsoft’s Windows 10 instructions describe Windows Sonic for Headphones and also name Dolby Access and DTS Sound Unbound as other options. To try Windows Sonic, open Start > Settings > System > Sound, select the playback device, open Device Properties, then choose Windows Sonic for Headphones under spatial sound and apply if prompted. Windows 10 support status
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. It no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. This does not change the audio-setting paths above, but it is relevant if you are deciding how to maintain a Windows 10 PC.
