If a Windows 10 PC can open a shared folder on a Windows 11 PC but cannot save or edit files, first identify which account Windows is using and whether that account has write permission at both the share and folder levels. If the share itself will not open, check the exact error and SMB client logs before changing security settings. An error such as 0x80070035 is a clue, not a diagnosis.
First identify what fails
Record the full error message and test the share in stages. Can the Windows 10 client reach the path, open an existing file, create a new file, and edit that file? Note whether the problem affects one account, one client, one folder, or every client. That pattern helps distinguish a path or connection problem from a write-permission problem.
- Share opens, but saving or editing fails: check the account actually used for the network connection and its effective permissions on the share and the underlying folder or file.
- Share will not open: check the UNC path, authentication, SMB client logs, and any security-policy error.
- Only Network browsing fails: test the direct share path; browsing and direct access are separate issues.
Microsoft lists errors including “Access is denied,” “You do not have permission to access \servershare,” System error 5, 0x80070035, and STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED among symptoms that can occur with Windows shares, third-party SMB devices, and NAS devices. None identifies a root cause by itself. See Microsoft’s SMB troubleshooting guidance.
Check the path and network before permissions
On the Windows 10 PC, enter the known path directly in File Explorer’s address bar, in the form \servershare. Use the Windows 11 computer’s name and the actual share name. If direct access works but the computer does not appear under Network, investigate discovery rather than changing file permissions.

For discovery and ordinary Windows file sharing, Microsoft advises checking that both computers are on the same network, setting a trusted Wi-Fi network to the Private profile, and enabling Network discovery and File and printer sharing. Discovery services may also need to be running. These checks help with finding devices; they do not grant permission to write. See Microsoft’s Windows network file-sharing instructions.
Inspect the Windows 10 SMB connection and logs
On the client, check existing connections and configuration before removing credentials or changing policy. In PowerShell, run:

Then open Event Viewer and review the Microsoft-Windows-SMBClient Connectivity and Security logs around the time of the failed attempt. Record the event ID, timestamp, server name, and full error. Also note whether a connection to that server was already established; Windows may be using an existing session rather than the credentials you expect.

Confirm which account needs write access
On the Windows 11 PC, identify the credentials the client is presenting. Use a valid account recognized by the server, then check that account’s effective access at both layers:
- Share permissions: the account must be allowed to write through the share.
- Folder and file permissions: the account must also be allowed to create or modify items in the shared folder and any affected subfolders or files.
Access is constrained by the effective permissions at both levels. A share can be reachable and files may be readable even when the account cannot create or change them. If only one folder or file fails, compare its permissions with a location where saving works. Grant only the intended account or group the necessary access rather than broadly opening the share.

Microsoft notes that access problems can result from insufficient permissions, but the error alone does not show which account or permission is responsible. Its file-sharing guidance covers Windows sharing setup; the actual permissions must be checked on the Windows 11 host.

Guest-access warning or event 31017
If Windows says unauthenticated guest access is blocked, or the SMBClient Security log shows event 31017, try valid credentials for the Windows 11 server instead of guest access. Microsoft warns that insecure guest logons expose a client to malicious-server and man-in-the-middle attacks. Enabling guest access is not a safe general-purpose fix. See Microsoft’s guest-access troubleshooting guidance and its explanation of insecure guest logons.

Signing compatibility errors
SMB signing checks message integrity and helps verify the identities of the client and server. Required signing settings vary by Windows edition and version. Microsoft says Windows 11 version 24H2 Enterprise, Pro, and Education require inbound and outbound SMB signing by default; Windows 11 version 24H2 Home does not require either by default. Windows Server 2025 requires outbound signing. These defaults do not prove signing is causing a Windows 10-to-Windows 11 failure: check the exact editions, versions, configured policies, and log evidence. A third-party SMB server that cannot meet a required signing setting may reject a connection. Microsoft does not recommend disabling signing as a workaround. See Control SMB signing behavior and the SMB troubleshooting article.
NTLM or name-resolution policy errors
NTLM restrictions can cause denials in some configurations, particularly when connecting to an IP address, workgroup, or NAS target where Kerberos is unavailable. This is a policy-dependent possibility, not a default explanation for every Windows 10 client and Windows 11 host. Check for an NTLM-related denial and confirm the domain or workgroup setup and path form. Where the environment supports it, Microsoft’s guidance favors Kerberos over NTLMv2; avoid switching to an IP-address path as a blind workaround. See Microsoft’s SMB signing and authentication guidance and its SMB troubleshooting guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Apply the narrowest fix supported by evidence
- Path or discovery issue: use the verified
\serversharepath. If direct access works but browsing does not, correct network profile or discovery settings rather than changing ACLs. - Write denied for one account or folder: correct that account’s share and filesystem permissions on the Windows 11 host.
- Guest-access block: connect with valid server credentials; do not weaken guest protections to make an unauthenticated connection work.
- Signing or NTLM evidence: verify the relevant OS edition, version, policy, and event details. Prefer a compatible secure configuration over disabling protections machine-wide.
After a change, retry creating and editing a test file as the affected user, then confirm that unrelated accounts and folders retain their intended access.

If the cause remains unclear, provide an administrator with both computers’ Windows editions and builds, when the problem began, the UNC path form (computer name or IP address), whether the environment is domain-joined or a workgroup, the account context without its password, the full error, relevant SMBClient event IDs, SMB connection details, and the effective share and folder permissions. Those details are needed to distinguish a permission issue from an authentication or protocol-policy failure.
Windows 10 support status is separate from the share failure
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. It no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. This is important maintenance context, but it does not establish why a particular client cannot save to a Windows 11 share. See Microsoft’s Windows file-sharing page.
