If you’re having problems connecting to a VPN in Windows, first confirm that you selected the intended VPN profile. Similar connection names can point to different servers, VPN types, or sign-in methods. If your organization deploys the profile, also verify its assignment and device sync before treating its appearance in Windows as proof that it is the right entry.
What a VPN profile name tells you—and what it doesn’t
In Windows, the connection name is a label used to identify the entry. Microsoft puts it plainly: “This is the VPN connection name you’ll look for when connecting.” (Microsoft’s Windows VPN instructions.) A recognizable name helps you choose a profile, but it does not identify the server or establish that the profile’s settings match another entry with a similar name.
A VPN profile can also specify a server name or address, VPN type, and sign-in information. Windows profiles may include routing, authentication, name-resolution, proxy, and automatic-connection settings as well. Those details can change how a connection behaves even when two entries look alike. (Microsoft’s VPN profile options reference.)

Verify the entry you are trying to use
- Open the Windows VPN list. Go to Settings > Network & internet > VPN, or open the taskbar network/VPN list. Find the intended connection by its name, then select that entry.
- Compare its connection details. Check the server name or address, VPN type, and sign-in method against the settings provided by your employer, school, or VPN provider. Don’t infer the destination or protocol from a friendly label.
- Check for near-duplicates. If several entries have similar names, compare their settings rather than choosing by name alone. A matching label does not prove the server, authentication, or other configuration is the same.
For a personal VPN, use the provider’s app or its published Windows connection settings to identify the intended connection. Microsoft’s setup instructions direct users to those sources for service-specific information. (Connect to a VPN in Windows.)
If your organization assigns the VPN through Intune
A profile appearing on the device and a profile being assigned to the intended person or device are different checks. In Intune, verify the intended VPN profile’s assignment and confirm that the device has synced or checked in. If the VPN depends on Trusted Root or SCEP certificate profiles, check that those required profiles were assigned and reached the device too. - Assignment: Confirm the correct user or device group is targeted by the intended profile.
- Device sync: Check the device’s last sync or check-in status; a delayed sync can leave it without the expected configuration.
- Certificate dependencies: Verify the relevant certificate profiles are assigned and delivered when the VPN configuration requires them.
A local profile listing can confirm that Windows has an entry, but it does not by itself establish that the right Intune profile is assigned to the right group.

For automatic-connection problems, inspect trigger settings
If the VPN connects manually but not automatically, check the settings that control when that specific profile should connect. Windows supports Always On and other auto-trigger behavior, and trusted-network detection can prevent a trigger under documented conditions. A user’s disabled Always On preference can also be preserved by profile name, so the name may matter to behavior without proving that two profiles are otherwise equivalent. Compare the intended profile’s Always On setting, app or name triggers, and trusted-network behavior with the organization’s expected configuration. This check is specific to automatic-connection symptoms; it does not replace confirming the server, sign-in settings, or managed assignment.
Inspect Windows profiles with PowerShell
Administrators and technically comfortable users can use Microsoft’s documented Get-VpnConnection cmdlet to list VPN profiles and view details, or query a particular profile by name. Microsoft documents the command in its Windows VPN profile and EAP settings guidance.

Use the command to inspect what is present in Windows, not as a substitute for checking Intune’s group assignment and device sync. The local profile and the cloud-side deployment answer different questions.

After the profile is confirmed, troubleshoot the connection
Once you have verified the intended entry and, where applicable, its deployment, move on to the connection failure itself. Check the authentication method and credentials, server reachability, DNS resolution, certificates, and other errors relevant to the configured VPN. Intune’s troubleshooting guidance includes examples such as unsuccessful domain-name resolution, but that symptom does not establish that a look-alike profile caused the failure.

There is no established frequency or success-rate figure for failures caused by confusing similar VPN profiles. Treat profile identification as a sensible first check, not a diagnosis of every VPN problem.
Microsoft’s Windows VPN instructions also note that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The guidance here is Windows-specific; check Microsoft’s current support information if you are troubleshooting a Windows 10 device.
