If Venmo isn’t working, first identify whether the problem is the app, sign-in, or a payment. Check your connection and device, then refresh the app session. If a payment or transfer produced an error, check your Venmo transaction history before trying it again so you don’t accidentally submit a duplicate.
Start by identifying what is failing
Different symptoms call for different checks. An app that will not load may have a connectivity or device issue; a sign-in failure is an account-access problem; and a declined payment may be an issuer decision or a Venmo security check rather than an app malfunction.

- App error or failure to load: Follow the connection, device, and app-refresh steps below.
- Can’t sign in: Use the credentials for your existing account and the password-reset option if needed.
- Payment or bank transfer error: Check transaction history before retrying an attempt whose outcome is unclear.
Fix common app errors
Venmo’s Common Error Messages guidance recommends these checks for general app problems:
- Check your connection. Confirm that your phone has internet access over Wi-Fi or mobile data. If you use a VPN, turn it off temporarily and try again.
- Check device resources. Make sure the device has enough available storage and memory for the app to run.
- Refresh your session. Sign out of Venmo, then sign back in.
- Reinstall the app if it still fails. Delete Venmo and install it again from your device’s app store. Venmo says reinstalling does not affect your account and helps ensure you have the latest app version.
- Update your operating system. The cited Venmo help page lists Apple iOS 14 or Android Lollipop (API 26) or higher as supported. Requirements can change, so check the live compatibility guidance if your device is older.
If you can’t sign in
Use the email address, phone number, or username associated with your existing Venmo account, along with its password. If you do not remember the password, use the password-reset option rather than creating another account.

Venmo says users are allowed one personal account and warns that creating a second account can cause payment-method problems. Its sign-in guidance also says sign-in is available only from the U.S. See Trouble Signing In for the current account-recovery steps.
If a payment or transfer fails
Check the transaction record before retrying
A Venmo “Bad state” error can indicate that Venmo is or was experiencing technical issues. If you were making a payment or bank transfer, open transaction history in the app and confirm whether it succeeded. Retry only if the record shows that it failed; if the outcome remains unclear, contact Venmo support instead of submitting the same transaction again.

Understand why a payment may be declined
A declined payment is not necessarily an app fault. Venmo says a bank or card issuer may decline it, or Venmo’s automated security systems may flag it. Follow the specific error message. If it points to your bank or card, contact the issuer; depending on the message, using another payment method or trying again later may help. Venmo’s Payment Declined page explains these possibilities.
Check whether Venmo is down
The troubleshooting steps here do not establish Venmo’s live service status. If the app and connection appear fine but errors persist, check Venmo’s official status information or contact support before assuming there is a widespread outage. Do not repeat a payment or transfer with an uncertain result; use transaction history to establish its status first.

Contact Venmo support
If the app still fails after the relevant checks, or you cannot determine whether a transaction went through, use Venmo’s official Contact Us page to choose an available support channel. It lists in-app messaging and general phone support. Contact options and messaging hours can change, so check the live page for current availability and the route that fits your issue.
