USB tethering usually fails because the phone and computer do not support that pairing, the phone’s sharing setting or trust prompt is incomplete, the computer does not recognize the USB connection, or the mobile plan does not allow hotspot use. Start by identifying whether you have Android or iPhone/iPad and Windows or Mac; the right fix depends on that combination.
First, check whether your phone and computer support USB tethering

| Android to Mac | Google says Android phones cannot tether to Mac computers by USB. Use Wi-Fi or Bluetooth tethering instead, or connect to a different computer. Google’s Android tethering guide. |
| iPhone or iPad to Mac | Apple supports USB Personal Hotspot. Check that the Mac trusts and recognizes the device, then inspect the “iPhone USB” network service if needed. Apple’s Personal Hotspot troubleshooting guide. |
| iPhone or iPad to Windows | Apple documents USB Personal Hotspot for Windows and says Apple Devices or iTunes must be installed. Accept any trust prompt. Apple’s connection guide. |
Turn on tethering and accept phone prompts
Android
- Connect the phone to the computer with a USB cable.
- Open the phone’s hotspot or tethering settings and turn on USB tethering. Menu names and locations vary by Android version and manufacturer; some steps in Google’s guide apply only to Android 14 and later.

iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings > Personal Hotspot and turn on Allow Others to Join.
- Connect the device to the computer by USB.
- If asked, tap Trust This Computer on the iPhone or iPad. On a Mac, allow the accessory if prompted.
For Windows, install Apple Devices or iTunes if it is not already installed. Refer to Apple’s connection instructions and its guide to sharing an iPhone or iPad connection with a Mac.

Check whether the computer recognizes the phone
Use a USB cable that fits both devices and supports data, not just charging. A cable or port is one possible point to check; changing it is not a guaranteed fix.

On a Mac
- Check whether the iPhone or iPad appears in Finder or iTunes.
- If it does not, reconnect the cable, check the port and accept any trust or accessory prompt.
- Update macOS, then follow Apple’s steps for the installed macOS version if the device still is not recognized.

On Windows
If Windows does not recognize the connection—particularly with USB-C—look at any error shown by Windows and consult its current USB or device-driver guidance. Hardware and software combinations can cause USB-C connection problems; the exact driver state and interface can vary, so do not assume a particular error or driver is responsible. Check the iPhone USB network service on Mac
If the iPhone appears in Finder or iTunes but the Mac still has no tethered connection, open the Mac’s Network settings and look for iPhone USB. If the service is missing, add it. If it is already listed, make it inactive and then active again, following the instructions for your macOS version. Apple’s troubleshooting guide provides the version-specific steps.

Verify that your mobile plan allows hotspot use
If Personal Hotspot is missing or you cannot enable it, contact your carrier. Apple says the carrier must enable Personal Hotspot and the wireless plan must support it. Google also warns that some carriers restrict tethering or charge extra; rules and fees are plan-specific, not universal. Check your own plan rather than assuming a particular cap or charge. Use Wi-Fi or Bluetooth if USB remains unavailable
If USB tethering is unsupported for your pairing or still will not work after these checks, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth hotspot modes may be alternatives, depending on your phone and computer.
