“TV lag” can mean slow menus and apps, video that buffers, or a delay between a game-controller button press and the picture. Start by identifying which one you’re seeing: restart and update a sluggish interface, troubleshoot the network when video buffers, and enable a supported Game Mode for delayed game controls. If a streaming device runs through a soundbar or receiver and starts or switches inputs slowly, connect it directly to the TV as a test.
First identify what is lagging
| Symptom | What it usually points to | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Menus, search, or apps respond slowly | The TV or streaming device’s interface, an app, or software updates in progress | Restart, close a recently used app, and check for app and system updates |
| Video pauses to load or takes a long time to start | The Wi-Fi or wired network connection, or the playback app | Check the connected network; restart or reposition the router, or test Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi if available |
| Games appear after a noticeable delay from controller input | TV picture-processing settings or the console’s HDMI connection | Use the TV’s supported Game Mode or Game Optimizer and connect the console by HDMI |
| A streaming device starts slowly or takes time to switch inputs through an audio system | Potential delay in the HDMI path or device control settings | Connect the streaming device directly to the TV to isolate the soundbar or receiver |
Fix slow menus, search, or apps
On Google TV, Google recommends restarting the device, force-stopping recently opened apps, checking for app updates, and checking for a system update. An interface can be slower while apps are updating, so wait for updates to finish before judging whether performance changed. The exact menu labels and paths vary by device. Google’s slow or laggy Google TV troubleshooting steps include these checks.
- Restart the TV or streaming device. Use its restart option if available, or follow the manufacturer’s instructions for restarting it.
- Close the app that may be stuck. On Google TV, force-stop recently opened apps using the device’s app settings; menu paths vary.
- Update the app, then the TV or device software. Check the app store for app updates and the settings menu for a system update. Allow any updates to complete.
- For one app that still has playback trouble, try clearing its cache or data. Google’s Android TV guidance includes this step. Clearing app data can sign you out or require you to configure the app again, so try it only after restarting and updating. Google’s Android TV video and game troubleshooting also recommends checking Wi-Fi and restarting or updating the device.
These actions may not improve every TV: persistent slowness after the checks may require help from the TV or device manufacturer. Some games are not compatible with Android TV, so a game that will not run is not necessarily evidence that the television is generally slow.

Buffering is a playback or connection symptom, not by itself proof that the TV is defective. First check that the TV is connected to the Wi-Fi network you intend to use. Google’s Google TV network troubleshooting suggests practical tests that do not require buying new equipment:

- Restart the existing router.
- Move the router closer to the TV if practical.
- If both the TV and router support it, try the 5 GHz Wi-Fi network.
- If the TV has an Ethernet port, connect it to the router by cable and compare playback.
These are diagnostic options, not guarantees of a fix. A wired test can help distinguish a Wi-Fi problem from other causes, but it does not establish that new networking equipment is needed.
Reduce game-controller delay
Game input lag is the delay between a console’s input and what appears on the TV. A supported low-latency gaming setting can reduce the TV’s contribution to that delay. LG describes ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) as a technology that reduces delay between game-console input and TV output, including in-game sounds and images. LG USA Support’s ALLM guidance, dated November 5, 2025, also notes that the console must be connected by HDMI for Game Optimizer and that support varies by TV model.

On supported LG TVs
Select Game Optimizer or the available Game mode. LG’s Game Optimizer instructions, dated July 17, 2026, show that menus depend on the model and software version. Console recognition can also vary with the device or HDMI input, so use the instructions for your specific set rather than assuming one menu path fits every LG TV.

Check the console’s connection
Connect the console to the TV by HDMI and confirm you are using an input that supports the feature you want. The exact ports and supported modes depend on the TV model. For example, some supported Samsung TVs require a designated HDMI port for 4K at 120 Hz; consult the manual for your set before changing ports or expecting a particular mode.
Test a streaming device connected through a soundbar or receiver
If a streaming box passes through an AVR (audio/video receiver) or soundbar and startup or input switching is slow, isolate the HDMI chain before changing other settings. Google notes that devices in the chain can add delay while processing the signal. Connect the streaming device directly to an available HDMI input on the TV and test startup and switching. Google’s slow startup and audio troubleshooting for Google TV streaming devices describes this test.

If the direct connection removes the delay, check HDMI-CEC settings on the TV and the other devices. Manufacturers may use different names for CEC, including Bravia Sync, Anynet+, and SimpLink. ARC or eARC can carry audio from the TV to the soundbar or receiver, allowing the streaming device to remain connected directly to the TV; confirm that your devices support the connection you need.

When to reset or ask for help
Do not start with a factory reset. It can erase data and settings, and Google’s troubleshooting guidance presents reset as a later step after simpler checks. If you consider one, follow the reset instructions for your exact TV or device and make sure you can restore required logins and settings. If slow menus or playback persist after restart, updates, and the relevant network or app checks, contact the TV or streaming-device manufacturer. For gaming delay that remains after using the model’s supported low-latency mode and checking the HDMI connection, consult the TV and console manuals for model-specific setup.
