First identify what is failing: a TikTok video or profile link may not be handing off to the TikTok app, while a website link may open in TikTok’s in-app browser and then fail to load. Those are different problems, so the best fix depends on where the link stops working.
Try the low-disruption checks below in order. Menu names and availability can vary by TikTok, Android, and iOS version; none of these steps guarantees that every link will open in the app.
Start by identifying the link problem
TikTok documents three deep-link formats: Apple Universal Links, Android App Links, and custom URI scheme links. The format and the platform’s link handling can affect where a link opens; a link opening outside TikTok does not, by itself, prove that the link is broken. TikTok’s deep-link documentation describes these formats.

- Video or profile link: The link should take you to TikTok content, but TikTok does not launch, the link opens somewhere unexpected, or it sends you to the App Store.
- Website link: The link opens inside TikTok, but the page does not load or work properly. TikTok says links visited in the app may use its in-app browser. TikTok’s sharing help page covers this browser behavior and its data controls.
Try these checks in order
1. Get a fresh copy of the link
Ask the sender to share the link again, or copy the full URL from the original post or message rather than tapping an old preview. This is a diagnostic check: it helps rule out a stale or incomplete copy, but is not a TikTok-documented fix.

2. Check whether TikTok opens normally
Open TikTok directly from your home screen. If it will not launch or is unresponsive, address that app problem first; it does not establish that the link’s app association is the cause.
3. Update TikTok
TikTok’s surfaced troubleshooting advice recommends making sure the app is up to date before troubleshooting. Update it through your device’s app store, then retry the link. TikTok’s official First steps troubleshooting page is the relevant help resource; its current interface details may change.

4. Close and reopen TikTok
Close the app, open it again, and tap the link once more. This is a basic app troubleshooting action, not a link-specific remedy documented by TikTok.

Retry on another Wi-Fi or mobile connection you are permitted to use. If the destination works on the other connection, that points toward a connectivity issue rather than proving a TikTok routing problem. Do not bypass network restrictions.

6. Test the URL outside the embedded view
If the source app offers a copy or share control, copy the address and open it in a browser. This can help determine whether the destination itself loads outside the embedded view. The exact controls vary by app; Google documents this approach for pages opened in its own app, not specifically for TikTok.
7. If the page opened in Google’s app, open it in a browser
For a page opened inside the Google app on Android, tap More, then choose Open in browser or Open in Chrome, if shown. Google also documents a setting for choosing whether web pages open inside its app or externally. These are Google-app instructions, not TikTok in-app browser controls. 8. Choose your default browser on Android
If links handled by a browser are going to the wrong browser, Android lets you choose a default: open Settings > Apps > Default apps (or Choose default apps) > Browser app, then select the browser you want. The exact wording can differ by device. This changes the default browser for links handled by that setting; it does not guarantee that TikTok video links will open in TikTok. 9. Clear TikTok’s in-app browser data only when a website page is failing
When the problem is a website loaded inside TikTok, use the browser menu’s clear-data control if available, or look in Profile > menu > Settings and privacy for the browser-data control. TikTok says its location can vary by app version and may appear under Activity or Security. Clearing cookies and cache can help with loading or site errors, but it signs you out of most websites and resets saved preferences. Follow TikTok’s guidance on clearing in-app browser cookies and cache; consider the sign-out and preference loss before confirming.

10. Compare the failing link with other links
Try another TikTok video or profile link, and try the same URL from another app or browser. If only one URL fails, the issue may be specific to that destination or link format. TikTok’s documented formats explain why links can be handled differently, but they do not diagnose an individual URL.
11. On Android, check link handling only if the basic checks point there
Android devices may offer app-link or supported-link controls, but the location and labels vary by Android version and manufacturer. Look in TikTok’s App info or your system’s app-link settings if available. There is no single verified menu path that applies to every Android device, so consult the device’s own guidance rather than assuming a particular toggle exists.
12. Report a persistent problem to TikTok
If TikTok is current and the relevant link, browser, and network checks have not resolved the problem, use TikTok’s in-app help or Report a problem route. The exact current menu sequence is not established here, so use the options shown in your app or TikTok’s official troubleshooting help.
What to expect on iPhone and Android
Android
You can select a default browser in Android Settings, but that setting is not the same as choosing whether TikTok content links open in TikTok. App-link controls differ among devices and software versions; a universal Android path for TikTok links should not be assumed.
iPhone
TikTok supports Apple Universal Links, but there is no verified, universal iPhone Settings path here that forces all TikTok URLs to open in the app. Update TikTok, compare the same link from another app or browser, and use TikTok’s help route if the failure persists.
