The DiskPart message “There is no volume selected. Please select a volume and try again” means the command you just ran needs a volume in focus, but DiskPart does not have one selected. Check the disk and volume listings, then select the correct volume before running a volume command such as assign. A selected partition is not necessarily a selected volume.
Why DiskPart reports that no volume is selected
DiskPart manages different kinds of storage objects: disks, partitions, and volumes. Commands act on the object that currently has focus, and a command that requires a volume cannot use a disk or partition selection in its place. Microsoft’s DiskPart reference says to list and select an object before using DiskPart commands.
The error identifies a selection or focus problem at the moment the command ran. It does not, by itself, explain why the volume is unavailable or what happened to the disk.
Inspect the disk and select the intended volume
Open Command Prompt or Windows Terminal as an administrator. DiskPart requires membership in the local Administrators group or equivalent. List the disks, select the intended disk, and inspect its partitions and volumes:

list disk
select disk <target-disk-number>
list partition
list volumeReplace <target-disk-number> with the number shown for the intended disk. Check its size and other identifying details; do not assume an example number matches your computer. In DiskPart listings, an asterisk marks the object with current focus.
If the intended volume appears in list volume, select it by its listed number and check the current volume focus:

select volumeUse the actual volume number from your listing. Microsoft’s select volume reference documents selection by volume number, drive letter, or mount path. With no argument, select volume displays the volume currently in focus.

If you were trying to assign a drive letter
assign assigns a drive letter or mount point to the volume in focus. After selecting the intended entry from list volume, run the assignment command appropriate to your goal, for example:

assign letter=EChoose an unused letter and verify that the selected volume is the one you intend to expose. If a partition appears in list partition but no corresponding volume appears in list volume, do not try to assign a letter as though that partition were a volume. Check Disk Management and establish the partition’s type and purpose before changing it. Some Microsoft Q&A reports describe special or hidden partitions in this situation, but those individual cases do not establish a universal cause.
If you were trying to format a volume
First confirm the target and whether it contains data you need. Formatting creates a file system and can delete data; Microsoft’s Format reference warns that formatting may cause data loss. Do not copy a sample DiskPart workflow that creates or formats a partition onto a disk containing data.

clean is a different, destructive operation: Microsoft describes it as removing partition or volume formatting from the disk with focus. It is not a substitute for selecting a volume or formatting one. Do not run clean, delete, format, or partition ID or attribute changes as trial-and-error fixes when data matters.

A partition listed by list partition is not automatically a usable volume for a volume command. Inspect the disk in Disk Management and determine the partition’s purpose before making changes. The message alone cannot establish whether the partition is special, hidden, or affected by a previous command.
If the disk shows “No Media,” is offline, is absent from list volume, or contains important data and its state is unclear, stop before making changes. Save the output of list disk, list partition, and list volume, and note what Disk Management shows. Those details are needed to choose a safe next step; the error itself is not enough to prescribe a recovery action.
