If Windows says “We couldn’t complete the updates. Undoing changes,” the message does not identify what went wrong. Microsoft describes it as a generic update-failure message. First find the failed update’s error code in Update history; then follow the guidance for that code rather than trying every possible fix.
Find the failed update’s error code
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update > Update history.
- Find the update that failed and record the error code shown with it.
- Use that code to narrow the cause and choose a relevant next step. If no code appears or the code is unclear, avoid diagnosing the device from the rollback message alone.
Microsoft groups “We couldn’t complete the updates. Undoing changes.” with “Failure configuring Windows Updates. Reverting changes.” as generic messages that can appear when an update fails. The wording itself is not a diagnosis. Microsoft’s error guidance explains how to use Update history and the code to investigate further.

Match the error code to a targeted fix
Microsoft’s examples connect different codes to different possible causes. Use this as a guide, not as proof of what happened on your PC:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

| Error code | What Microsoft associates it with | Relevant next step |
|---|---|---|
| 0x80240034 | An operation that did not complete because the download was interrupted. | Retry the update when the download can complete without interruption; investigate further if the code returns. |
| 0xC1900101-family | Usually a driver error during an upgrade. | For this error family, Microsoft suggests checking available space, updating relevant third-party drivers, disconnecting extra hardware, checking Device Manager, and repairing system files. |
| 0x80073712 | A file needed by Windows Update is likely damaged or missing. | Microsoft recommends repairing system files with DISM. |
| 0x80070070-family | Insufficient space to install the upgrade. | Free drive space before trying the upgrade again. |
These associations are examples from Microsoft’s upgrade and installation error guidance, not universal explanations for every failed update. The page also includes built-in troubleshooting steps for particular cases, such as running the Windows Update troubleshooter, freeing disk space, and repairing system files. Choose steps that fit the code and symptoms; do not treat every item as a mandatory checklist for any rollback.

When the rollback keeps happening
If the update fails again, check whether the same error code appears and follow the matching Microsoft guidance. For upgrade problems, disconnecting nonessential hardware is one of Microsoft’s suggested steps, but it is not a diagnosis or a fix for every error. If upgrade or installation problems continue after relevant troubleshooting, Microsoft advises contacting support.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says that after this date it no longer provides free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10; the PC will continue to work, and Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11. A rollback message alone does not show that Windows 10 is unsupported or explain why a particular update failed.
