Work through The Forest connection problem in this order: refresh Steam on both computers, make sure both installations run the same game version, have the host wait for the friend to join before pressing Start, and only then investigate dedicated-server ports, firewall rules and NAT. This order separates a stale client or session from a server that cannot be reached, without jumping straight to a reinstall.
Use this order before changing router settings
A timeout can be caused by the joining computer, the host’s session timing, or the network path between them. Check the inexpensive client and session conditions first. Port forwarding cannot repair a mismatched version or a host that started the game before the other player finished joining.

- Close The Forest on both computers.
- Exit Steam completely on both computers, then start Steam again. Do not merely close the window if Steam remains in the notification area.
- Confirm that both players are offered the same game build. If either copy is behind, enable Steam’s automatic updating for The Forest and wait for the download to finish.
- Have the host create the co-op session and remain at the lobby or invite stage.
- Let the friend join successfully before the host presses Start. Starting the world early is reported to make the joining connection time out.
- If the session still cannot be reached, move to the dedicated-server and network checks below. Do not reinstall until these checks are complete.
Refresh Steam and align the game versions
Restart both Steam clients
A community troubleshooting guide identifies a full Steam restart on both the host and joining machine as its most-reported fix for The Forest co-op timeouts. A stale Steam process can retain an old lobby, authentication state or network session even after the game has been closed.
- Save any other Steam game, then choose Steam and Exit on each computer.
- Wait a few seconds. On Windows, open Task Manager if necessary and confirm that Steam is no longer running.
- Launch Steam on both computers and sign in to the accounts that own The Forest.
- Start The Forest only after Steam has finished loading your library and any pending downloads.
If one player is using Steam’s offline mode, return that client to online mode before creating or joining the session. The restart is a diagnostic step, not a permanent network configuration change.

Check for a version mismatch
Both players need the same game version. A mismatch can look like a network timeout because the lobby is visible while the game rejects the connection during handoff.
- In Steam, open Library, right-click The Forest, choose Properties, and open Updates.
- Set automatic updates to Steam’s Always keep this game updated option, or the equivalent label shown by your client.
- Allow Steam to finish every queued The Forest download on both computers.
- If the versions still appear inconsistent, open Properties > Installed Files and select Verify integrity of game files. Let the process finish, then restart Steam and try the lobby again.
The available evidence does not establish which 2026 patches contain a particular fix. No current patch-note set was available for this diagnosis, so treat version alignment as a prerequisite rather than assuming that a specific update changed the networking behavior.

Make the host wait until the friend has joined
The host’s timing is a separate failure mode from Steam’s state. In a normal co-op flow, the host should create the session, invite the other player, and wait for the friend to appear in the lobby or player list. Only then should the host press Start or launch the world.
Correct sequence
- The host selects the multiplayer or co-op option and creates the session.
- The host sends the Steam invitation or waits for the friend to join through the visible lobby.
- The joining player accepts the invite and remains in the lobby until the host can see the player as connected.
- The host presses Start after that connection is visible.
Community reports associate pressing Start before the friend joins with a timeout on the joining side. If that happened, end the session, restart both Steam clients, and create a fresh lobby instead of repeatedly attempting to enter the already-started world.
Dedicated-server ports and the Server.cfg file
Port forwarding matters only when you are running or joining a dedicated server that must be reached through a router. It is not the first step for an ordinary Steam lobby. The Official The Forest Wiki’s dedicated-server documentation lists these community-reported defaults:

The dedicated-server tool was added in update v0.59, according to that wiki. The same settings can be supplied as command-line options: -serversteamport, -servergameport and -serverqueryport. These are defaults, not proof that every installation is listening on those numbers.

The configuration file is named Server.cfg. Do not substitute dedicatedserver.cfg; that filename belongs to Sons of the Forest and is not the file identified for The Forest’s dedicated server.
One Windows setup guide reports this location after the server has been launched once:
AppDataLocalLowSKSTheForestDedicatedServerdsServer.cfg
That path has low confidence and can vary with the Windows account, installation method and server-tool version. The file is generated on the first dedicated-server launch, so launch the tool once, stop it cleanly, and search your user profile for Server.cfg if the reported folder is missing. Open the file in a text editor and use its port values for the router and firewall rules; do not rely on a copied default after changing the configuration.

Forward the configured ports and permit the server through the firewall
When the server is listening on a private home network, forward the UDP ports shown in its Server.cfg to the computer running the server. The community fix path identifies UDP forwarding for the configured Steam, game and query ports. If your file uses non-default values, forward those values instead of 8766, 27015 and 27016.
- Give the host computer a stable private address, either by creating a DHCP reservation in the router or by assigning an address according to your router’s documentation.
- In the router’s port-forwarding page, create UDP rules for each configured server port.
- Set the destination of every rule to the host computer’s current local-network address.
- In the host operating system’s firewall, allow the dedicated-server program to receive the same traffic. A router rule cannot override a local firewall block.
- Restart the dedicated server after saving the configuration and router rules.
- Have the remote player try again using the server’s normal join method.
A community setup result also reports setting serverIP to the host’s local network address. Because that value was not pinned to a full authoritative page, treat it as an installation-specific setting: use the address assigned to the server computer on your LAN, not a public address copied from an internet speed-test page, and confirm the syntax expected by your version of Server.cfg.
Do not use an unverified port definition
Another configuration site labels port 8766 as an RCON or Telnet port and lists additional settings such as veganMode. Those labels are not corroborated by the dedicated-server documentation used for the defaults above. For timeout troubleshooting, use the values and names in your own Server.cfg and the Official The Forest Wiki’s dedicated-server page rather than treating that alternate labeling as authoritative.
Diagnose router and NAT reachability
Port forwarding can fail even when every number is typed correctly. A guide for Sons of the Forest describes several general networking failure modes; they are useful diagnostic categories, but they are not confirmed as The Forest-specific causes.

These categories explain why a successful-looking router rule does not prove that a remote player can reach the server. They should be investigated after Steam, versions and lobby timing have been ruled out.

Use a second network to separate game and router problems
A useful isolation test is to have the host or joining computer connect through a phone hotspot or another independent network, then repeat the same join attempt. This recommendation comes from a Sons of the Forest troubleshooting guide and is an analogy rather than a The Forest-specific test result.
- If the connection works on the alternate network, the original router, ISP path, NAT arrangement or firewall policy becomes the leading suspect.
- If the timeout follows the same computer and account on the alternate network, return to Steam state, game-version verification, lobby timing and the dedicated-server configuration.
- Do not treat one successful hotspot attempt as proof that your home router is correctly configured for every player; hotspot providers can use their own NAT restrictions.
Use the test briefly and watch data usage. It is a diagnostic comparison, not a requirement to play through a mobile connection.

Only one joining player times out
Start with that player’s Steam restart, automatic-update status and file verification. If another friend can join the same host, the failing machine’s client state, firewall or local network is more likely than the host’s lobby timing. Compare the failing player’s network by repeating the attempt from a different connection.
Everyone fails to join one host
Repeat the host timing sequence with a new lobby. If the problem is a dedicated server, read its Server.cfg, confirm that the process is running, and compare the router rules with the file’s actual ports. Then inspect the host firewall and NAT layout.
The server appears locally but not from outside
This pattern points toward reachability rather than game files. Check the forwarded destination address, whether the router has a public WAN address, double NAT and CGNAT. A local success can coexist with a remote failure when hairpin NAT or an upstream firewall is involved.

The error began after an update
Make both installations complete their updates, verify the files on both machines, and restart Steam before testing again. The available material does not identify a particular 2026 patch or guarantee that an update caused the timeout, so avoid downgrading or replacing files based only on timing.
Why reinstalling is usually the wrong first move
The reported fix path puts stale Steam state, version mismatch and host timing ahead of reinstalling. A reinstall does not correct a router forwarding rule, CGNAT, double NAT, a wrong serverIP, or a firewall that blocks the server. It can also leave the two players on different update states if one copy is reinstalled while the other remains unchanged.

If you do reinstall, let Steam finish all downloads on both machines before comparing the result.
Final verification checklist
Before declaring the timeout fixed, run one clean test and record what changed:
- Steam was fully exited and restarted on both computers.
- Both The Forest installations completed automatic updates and, when needed, file verification.
- The host waited until the friend was visible in the lobby before pressing Start.
- If a dedicated server was involved, the server was reading the intended
Server.cfg. - The router forwarded UDP ports matching the file’s actual
serverSteamPort,serverGamePortandserverQueryPortvalues. - The forwarding destination matched the host’s current LAN address.
- The host firewall allowed the dedicated-server process and configured traffic.
- A remote test was distinguished from a same-LAN test, so hairpin NAT was not mistaken for an internet failure.
- CGNAT or another upstream NAT layer was considered when the router had no publicly reachable WAN address.
If all client and host checks pass but outside players still cannot connect, the remaining evidence points to network reachability or an unsupported NAT arrangement rather than a simple in-game setting. Contact the internet provider or network administrator with the WAN, NAT and forwarding details instead of repeatedly recreating the same lobby.
