Cyberduck’s “EOF while reading packet” message means the remote server closed the SFTP connection before sending the packet Cyberduck expected. In most cases, the failure is on the hosting account, SSH/SFTP subsystem, login shell, or provider policy—not a damaged Cyberduck download. Verify the endpoint and account first, then use the server logs to identify the exact cause.

What “EOF while reading packet” means

EOF means “end of file.” In this error, Cyberduck is waiting for an SFTP packet and the remote side ends the connection instead. Cyberduck maintainer dkocher describes the condition directly: “The server is hanging up the connection. Can you please ask your hosting provider or peek into server logs.”

The message does not, by itself, identify whether the server rejected the account, could not start its SFTP subsystem, terminated the login shell, or applied a provider policy. It also does not indicate that a file downloaded through Cyberduck has become corrupted. The useful evidence is on the server side, especially the SSH authentication and SFTP subsystem logs.

A successful SSH login does not prove that SFTP can start. Authentication and SFTP startup are separate stages: the server can accept the username and password, then fail when it tries to launch the SFTP subsystem or create the SFTP channel.

Use this diagnostic order

Work through these checks in order. Stop when the provider or server log identifies the failure; changing unrelated Cyberduck settings will not repair a server-side termination.

  1. Confirm that the bookmark uses SFTP, the provider’s SFTP hostname, and the provider’s documented SFTP port.
  2. Ask whether SSH/SFTP is enabled for this specific account and verify that the password is current and not expired.
  3. Reproduce the error once and record the UTC time, username, and source IP address.
  4. Ask the hosting provider or administrator to inspect the SSH authentication and SFTP subsystem logs for that timestamp.
  5. On a self-managed Linux or Unix host, verify the configured SFTP subsystem path or internal-sftp implementation.
  6. Confirm that a complete SFTP server package is installed rather than SSH login support alone.
  7. Check the account’s login shell and startup files for immediate exits, restrictions, output, or syntax errors.
  8. Compare Cyberduck with sftp -vvv user@host and give the verbose output and matching server-log timestamp to the administrator.

Confirm the protocol and endpoint

Use an SFTP bookmark

Open or create a Cyberduck bookmark whose protocol is SFTP. Enter the SFTP hostname supplied by the hosting provider, not merely a hostname that happens to accept another file-transfer protocol. Use the SFTP port documented for the account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An FTP connection on port 21 is not evidence that SFTP is enabled. FTP and SFTP use different services and authorization paths. A provider can leave FTP working while SSH/SFTP access is disabled, restricted to selected accounts, or assigned to another hostname or port.

Check the endpoint with the provider

If the provider supplies separate names for web hosting, FTP, SSH, and SFTP, copy the SFTP-specific value exactly. Ask support to confirm all three values together: hostname, port, and protocol. This prevents a valid password from being tested against the wrong service.

Check account authorization and password state

Verify that SFTP is enabled for the user

Ask the host whether SSH/SFTP access is enabled for the exact username you are using. Some hosting accounts allow web or FTP access while disallowing SSH/SFTP. Cyberduck’s interoperability guidance specifically directs users to have the hosting provider enable SFTP for the account when this is the cause.

If the account was recently created, migrated, suspended, or changed from a managed to a restricted plan, request confirmation that the SFTP entitlement is active rather than assuming that a successful FTP login carries over.

Check for an expired or changed password

Verify the password through the provider’s current account controls. Published troubleshooting cases include expired passwords and disabled SSH accounts that produced an SFTP failure after the client attempted to connect. If the password was changed recently, replace the saved Cyberduck credential instead of relying on an old bookmark entry.

When contacting support, state whether the password was recently changed, whether another user can connect, and whether SSH access for this account was ever enabled. Those details help the provider distinguish credentials from account policy.

Capture evidence before changing server settings

Record one controlled reproduction

Retry the connection once after confirming the endpoint and credentials. Record the UTC time, username, and source IP address. Avoid repeated retries while support is searching logs; a single precise timestamp is easier to correlate with an SSH authentication or SFTP-subsystem event.

Ask for the relevant logs

Send the timestamp and connection details to the hosting provider or server administrator and ask them to inspect both SSH authentication logs and SFTP subsystem logs. The server-side entry normally reveals whether the account was denied, the password was invalid or expired, the subsystem executable was missing, or the session ended when the shell started.

This is the fastest branch point for a hosted account because only the provider can inspect its daemon configuration and logs. Do not treat a generic Cyberduck error as a complete diagnosis when the server can provide a more specific reason.

Verify the SFTP subsystem on a self-managed server

Inspect the Subsystem sftp setting

On a Linux or Unix server you administer, open the SSH daemon configuration and locate the Subsystem sftp entry. It must point to an existing SFTP server binary or use a supported embedded implementation.

A configuration can fail when it references a path that does not exist, such as /usr/lib/ssh/sftp-server. Reported fixes include changing the entry to an installed path such as /usr/lib/openssh/sftp-server or selecting internal-sftp, provided that implementation is supported by the installed SSH daemon.

Do not copy a path from another operating system or distribution without checking that the binary exists on this host. The path must match the package layout of the running system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check that the configured implementation is usable

If the setting names an external server, verify that the referenced sftp-server binary is present and executable by the SSH service. If it names internal-sftp, verify that the installed SSH daemon supports that implementation and that the account’s restrictions are compatible with it.

A missing binary, a typo in the path, or an implementation unavailable in a minimal installation can allow ordinary SSH authentication while preventing the SFTP channel from starting. The resulting client symptom can be an immediate disconnect or the EOF message.

Install the complete SFTP server component

Embedded and minimal systems sometimes include SSH login support without the full OpenSSH SFTP server package. In that situation, authentication may succeed but the server has no working SFTP subsystem to launch.

Install the platform’s complete SFTP server component, commonly distributed as the openssh-sftp-server package or an equivalent package name for that operating system. Confirm the package is installed on the same host that accepts the SSH connection, then recheck the Subsystem sftp configuration so it points to the installed implementation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Package names and binary locations vary by distribution. Use the operating system’s package documentation or administrator procedures rather than assuming that a path valid on one system exists on another.

Check the login shell and startup files

Look for a shell that exits or blocks SFTP

The account’s login shell can terminate the channel immediately if it is restricted, exits on startup, or is incompatible with a noninteractive SFTP session. Ask the administrator to test the account with a standard shell that supports noninteractive operation, subject to the host’s security policy.

A shell configured only for interactive use can also interfere with a subsystem request. The SSH login may appear successful while the subsequent SFTP channel closes before Cyberduck receives its first packet.

Review startup-file behavior

Inspect files such as .bashrc for syntax errors, commands that exit immediately, or unsolicited output. SFTP is a protocol session, not an interactive terminal; diagnostic banners, prompts, or other shell output can corrupt the expected channel negotiation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove or conditionally suppress nonessential startup output and correct syntax problems. Have the administrator test the account again after each change so the log shows whether the SFTP subsystem now starts.

Separate authentication from SFTP startup with verbose testing

From a terminal, compare Cyberduck with:

sftp -vvv user@host

The -vvv option requests verbose client diagnostics. Preserve the output rather than paraphrasing it, and pair it with the UTC timestamp from the server logs. The comparison helps establish where the sequence stops:

  • If the client is rejected before authentication completes, focus on the hostname, port, account authorization, password, and SSH policy.
  • If authentication succeeds but the SFTP subsystem request is followed by a disconnect, focus on the subsystem package, Subsystem sftp path, implementation, shell, and startup files.
  • If the terminal client succeeds while Cyberduck fails against the same endpoint and account, provide both outputs to the administrator. The difference may identify an interoperability or provider-policy issue rather than a bad password.

Do not conclude that the server is healthy merely because an SSH prompt appears. The relevant test is whether the SFTP subsystem starts and remains available after authentication.

Match the symptom to the likely cause

Observed situation Most relevant axis What to verify Who can fix it
FTP works, but the SFTP bookmark disconnects Protocol and endpoint SFTP hostname, documented SFTP port, and account entitlement Provider or server administrator
Password was recently changed or may be expired Credentials Current password and whether the SSH account is enabled Account owner or provider
Authentication succeeds, then EOF appears immediately SFTP implementation Subsystem sftp path, installed binary, or internal-sftp Server administrator
The account’s shell exits, is restricted, or prints startup text Shell behavior Login shell and .bashrc or other startup-file behavior Server administrator
Terminal SFTP and Cyberduck show different results Provider policy or interoperability Verbose client output and corresponding server logs Provider or server administrator

The table is a triage aid, not a substitute for the log entry. Several causes can produce the same immediate disconnect, so apply the change indicated by the server’s evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hosted account recovery

  1. Tell support that Cyberduck reports “EOF while reading packet” and provide the UTC timestamp, username, source IP, SFTP hostname, and port.
  2. Ask support to confirm that SSH/SFTP is enabled for the account and that the password is neither expired nor locked.
  3. Ask them to inspect SSH authentication and SFTP subsystem logs for the reproduction time.
  4. If the provider identifies a disabled entitlement, request SFTP enablement for the account or the provider’s approved alternative.
  5. If the provider identifies a credential problem, reset or update the password and replace the saved Cyberduck credential.
  6. If support identifies a provider-side interoperability or policy restriction, follow its required hostname, port, shell, or account configuration instead of repeatedly retrying Cyberduck.

Self-managed server recovery

  1. Reproduce the failure once and save the server-log timestamp.
  2. Check that the full SFTP server package is installed on the SSH host.
  3. Inspect sshd_config for the Subsystem sftp entry.
  4. Replace a nonexistent external path with the actual installed sftp-server path, or use a supported internal-sftp implementation.
  5. Review the account’s login shell and startup files for restrictions, immediate exits, output, or syntax errors.
  6. Run sftp -vvv user@host and compare its stopping point with the server log.
  7. Retest from Cyberduck only after the administrator has corrected the identified configuration and followed the host’s normal procedure for applying SSH configuration changes.

Common wrong turns

  • Changing Cyberduck download settings: EOF is reported while the SFTP packet is being read, before a file-transfer problem has been established.
  • Assuming FTP proves SFTP works: the protocols can be enabled independently, with different hostnames, ports, and account permissions.
  • Stopping after a successful SSH login: authentication can succeed while the SFTP subsystem fails to launch.
  • Guessing a subsystem path: a path copied from another distribution can point to a nonexistent binary.
  • Retrying without recording the time: repeated attempts make it harder for support to correlate the event with the correct log entries.
  • Leaving shell output enabled: banners and diagnostic text intended for an interactive terminal can interfere with a protocol-only SFTP channel.

What to include in a support request

A concise support request should contain:

  • The exact Cyberduck error text.
  • The UTC time of one fresh reproduction.
  • The SFTP hostname and port, without sharing the password.
  • The username and source IP address, if the provider requests them.
  • Whether FTP or ordinary SSH works.
  • Whether the password was recently changed or could be expired.
  • The output from sftp -vvv user@host, with private keys, passwords, and other secrets removed.

Ask the provider or administrator to state which stage failed: account authorization, credentials, SFTP subsystem, shell startup, or provider policy. That answer determines the fix and prevents trial-and-error changes to the client.
