If Microsoft Authenticator says “The account you’re trying to add is not valid at this time,” Microsoft’s guidance is to contact Microsoft Support for a personal account or your organization’s IT administrator for a work or school account. Microsoft does not identify a specific cause or promise a self-service fix for this exact error.
First, identify the account type
The right support contact depends on the account you are adding. Microsoft’s troubleshooting page gives this instruction for the exact error: “Please contact Support for personal accounts or reach out to your IT admin for work/school accounts.”
| Account you are adding | Who to contact |
|---|---|
| Personal Microsoft account | Microsoft Support |
| Work or school account | Your organization’s IT administrator or help desk |
For a work or school account, the organization manages access and sign-in settings, so its administrator is the appropriate contact. Tell them the exact error text and what you were doing when it appeared.

- Check notifications: Confirm notifications are enabled for Authenticator in your device’s settings.
- Check your device: Install available device updates and verify that the date and time are correct.
- Test without a VPN: Disconnect from a VPN temporarily and see whether the behavior changes.
If the error remains, follow the support route for your account type rather than assuming one of these checks resolved an account-side issue.

Microsoft lists this exact message but does not explain its cause. The error alone does not establish that the account is inactive, that a QR code is faulty, or that the phone needs repair. Microsoft’s entry also does not say that reinstalling Authenticator will fix it.
