Before using your new Valve Steam Frame, plug it into a compatible power adapter, complete its initial update, sign in to Steam, and pair its controllers. Then choose standalone play or connect to a PC with the included wireless adapter for PC VR. The title’s “Stream Frame” wording is an error; Valve calls the headset Steam Frame.
1. Plug in the headset before turning it on
Valve says the headset ships in a special mode that requires plugging it into power first. Use an adapter that supports at least 27 W; Valve recommends 45 W. Those figures are different: 45 W is recommended, not the minimum. Check the adapter’s output and connector rather than relying on its product name.
Valve’s Steam Frame development setup guide is written for developers, but it provides the direct instructions for this first-power step.
2. Complete the initial update and sign in
Turn on the headset and follow the update prompts inside it. After it reboots, log in to Steam. Finish this initial setup before troubleshooting PC streaming; the wireless adapter and SteamVR pairing are separate steps.

3. Turn on the controllers
Press the Steam-logo button on each controller. Valve says controllers should pair automatically when they are on and visible to the headset. If a controller does not power on, check whether the tab in its battery compartment is still in place and remove it.
4. Pair a controller manually if needed
If a powered-on controller does not appear, open VR Settings > Controllers > Pair Controllers in the headset and follow the pairing flow. This is the manual route; automatic pairing is the expected first attempt.

5. Choose standalone play or PC streaming
Steam Frame supports standalone VR and non-VR experiences on SteamOS. It is also designed primarily for low-latency streaming from a PC, letting you access PC VR experiences. Decide which route suits the first session: launch an experience on the headset for standalone use, or connect a PC for PC VR.

Valve describes these capabilities on its Steam Frame overview. Check that the experience you want to play supports the mode you plan to use; do not assume a particular game is included with the headset.

6. Connect the included wireless adapter for PC VR
For Valve’s documented PC setup, plug the included wireless adapter into your PC. Use a USB 3 port if one is available. This adapter connection is the direct route between the PC and headset.
7. Pair the PC through SteamVR
- Launch SteamVR on the PC.
- When SteamVR prompts you to install the required driver, accept the prompt.
- Follow the pairing flow and enter the code shown on the PC in the headset.
- Once paired, select the PC from the headset’s VR dashboard to connect.
These steps follow Valve’s Steam Frame setup instructions.

8. Treat home Wi-Fi as an alternative connection
Valve says streaming over home Wi-Fi is possible, but tends to be more congested and less reliable than using the included direct wireless adapter. If you try Wi-Fi and the connection is unreliable, use the adapter route described above.

Once setup is complete, choose a game or other experience you already own and launch it in the mode it supports. The available Valve setup information does not confirm a bundled game, so check your Steam library rather than expecting a specific title to be included.

10. Leave advanced options for when you need them
Complete ordinary setup before changing developer or beta settings or adding third-party capture software. Valve’s setup guide includes a developer-focused beta option: opting into beta branches for the headset, Steam client, and SteamVR to get the latest updates. That is an advanced or development path, not a required first-session step.
A separate third-party utility called Stream Frame by Boxtree supports headset capture and streaming workflows. It is not Valve software; its setup documentation involves developer mode and SSH or USB configuration. Use its vendor instructions if you specifically need those workflows, rather than treating it as part of basic headset setup.
