If your headphones crackle on Xbox One, first reseat the 3.5 mm plug and test the headset and controller separately. That quick cross-check helps show whether the noise follows the headset or stays with the controller. Then check Xbox audio settings and controller firmware; these are reasonable troubleshooting steps, but they are not a guaranteed fix for static.

First, identify how the headset is connected

These steps address headphones plugged into the 3.5 mm jack on an Xbox-compatible controller. If you are using a headset adapter, include it in your checks: an adapter adds another connection that could be loose or faulty. If the controller is connected to a Windows PC, use the separate PC section below rather than following Xbox console menu advice.

Xbox lists its Stereo Headset as compatible with Xbox One; it connects to a compatible Xbox Wireless Controller through the controller’s 3.5 mm jack. Compatibility information establishes the connection type, not a guaranteed cure for crackling.

Check the connection, then cross-test the headset and controller

  1. Turn the volume down before unplugging. Remove the headset plug, check the plug and cable for visible damage, then insert the plug fully into the controller jack. A poorly seated connection is a basic possibility to rule out; reseating is a diagnostic step, not a quoted Xbox repair procedure.
  2. Try the headset on another device. If it crackles there too, the headset or its cable is suspect. If it works elsewhere, that shifts suspicion toward the controller connection or Xbox configuration, but does not prove the controller is faulty.
  3. Try another compatible headset on the same controller, if available. If only the original headset crackles, its cable or electronics are more likely at fault. If both headsets crackle on that controller, investigate its jack or the Xbox audio configuration.

Microsoft Community guidance recommends trying another headset to help distinguish a headset fault from controller-jack or wiring issues. This is community advice, not an official repair guarantee. Keep track of whether the noise follows the headset, stays with the controller, or appears only in one setup.

Check Xbox audio settings and controller firmware

If the physical checks do not resolve the noise, check the console’s headset audio format and party-chat output, and look for a controller firmware update. A Microsoft Community answer suggests trying Stereo uncompressed, setting party-chat output to the headset, and checking controller firmware.

Treat those as low-cost checks, not proof that a setting or outdated firmware caused the static. The available official Xbox material does not establish these steps as a specific, guaranteed fix for this symptom. If you change a setting, note its original value so you can restore it if audio gets worse.

These checks apply to Windows 10 or 11 audio, not the Xbox One console interface. Microsoft identifies audio enhancements, audio format, and driver problems as possible causes of distorted or crackling PC audio.

A Microsoft Q&A discussion describes a PC/controller audio issue in a particular context involving spatial audio, but it does not establish that spatial audio causes static from a headset plugged into an Xbox One console. Do not treat that discussion as a console fix.

Decide whether the headset or controller needs attention

  • The headset crackles on multiple devices: its plug, cable, or electronics are the stronger suspects. Consider a replacement only if testing points to a headset fault.
  • The headset works elsewhere, but multiple compatible headsets crackle on one controller: the controller jack or Xbox-side configuration is more suspect. Buying a headset would not fix a damaged controller jack.
  • The noise appears only with one connection path or adapter: test the headset directly in a compatible controller jack, if possible, to isolate the adapter or extra connection.
  • The results are inconsistent: record which headset and controller you tested, whether the controller was charging or connected by cable, and whether the crackle affects game audio, chat, or both. Give those details to Xbox Support for model-specific follow-up rather than trying an unverified reset sequence.

If testing identifies a failed headset, Xbox’s Stereo Headset is one compatible wired option for Xbox One when connected to a compatible Xbox Wireless Controller’s 3.5 mm jack. Confirm compatibility for the specific headset and controller models before buying; replacing the headset will not address a controller or console-side fault.
