If Snapchat video calls will not connect, show your camera, or carry sound, check camera and microphone permissions first. Then compare Wi-Fi with mobile data, refresh Snapchat and your phone, and test the camera or microphone in another app to narrow down whether the problem is specific to Snapchat.
Identify what is failing
Before changing settings, note whether the call will not start or connect, the other person cannot see your video, you cannot hear or be heard, or Snapchat is freezing. These symptoms point to different checks, although Snapchat does not publish a mobile video-call diagnostic flow that identifies a cause from a symptom alone.
To start a video chat, open a Chat or Group Chat and tap the movie-camera icon. Snapchat says a video chat can include one friend or a group of up to 15 friends. Snapchat Support explains how to start a video chat.
Check Snapchat camera and microphone permissions
Snapchat identifies camera and microphone access as permissions used for video chat. If your camera preview is missing, check camera access; if call audio is missing, check microphone access as well. Permission names and paths can vary by operating-system version and locale.

Android
- Open Settings > Apps > Snapchat > Permissions.
- Allow Camera and Microphone while using the app, if those options appear.
- If you cannot find a permission from Snapchat’s app page, look under Android’s permission controls for Camera or Microphone and check Snapchat’s access there.

iPhone
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and enable Snapchat.
- Return to Privacy & Security, open Microphone, and enable Snapchat if it needs to send your voice.
Apple describes these controls in its guide to controlling access to hardware features on iPhone. Snapchat also provides instructions for changing permissions on iOS.

Compare Wi-Fi with mobile data
Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or from mobile data to Wi-Fi, and try the call again. Snapchat recommends this comparison when troubleshooting camera problems because connection issues can affect camera behavior. If the call works on one connection but not the other, Snapchat advises contacting the relevant mobile or internet provider for network support. See Snapchat’s camera troubleshooting steps.
Refresh Snapchat and restart the phone
- Close Snapchat completely, then open it again and retry the call.
- Check Google Play or the iOS App Store for a Snapchat update and install one if available.
- Restart the phone, reopen Snapchat, and test again.
Snapchat lists closing and reopening the app, checking for updates, and restarting the device among its troubleshooting steps for camera issues and app problems. Its general guide is My Snapchat app isn’t working right or is crashing.

Find out whether the issue extends beyond Snapchat
Use the phone’s native camera to record a short video and play it back; for a microphone-only problem, make a short recording in the phone’s voice recorder if available. If video or sound also fails in another app, the issue may not be limited to Snapchat. This is an isolation check, not proof of a particular hardware fault. Snapchat’s audio help recommends a native camera or voice-recorder check for recorded-video audio problems and advises contacting the device manufacturer if sound fails there too; that guidance addresses recorded audio, not live-call diagnosis. If permissions are enabled, the connection comparison and refresh steps have not helped, and the issue appears specific to Snapchat, report it in the app. Open Settings > Bugs and Suggestions > Report a Bug. Labels may vary between app versions. Snapchat’s app troubleshooting guide describes this reporting route.

In the report, describe what fails (connecting, video, or audio), your phone model and operating-system version, and the steps you have already tried. Avoid including private conversation content or account credentials.
